Arrive earlyIt's a good idea to arrive at least 30 min-utes early so you can have plenty of timeto find a parking spot, pick up your tickets, use the rest room and get something at theconcession counter.

Use the restroom BEFORE the showand DURING intermission

Turn your cell phone offEven if you have it on vibrate, people canstill hear the buzzing and it's very distract-ing. Don't talk or text on the phone DUR-ING the performance. If you need to take acall, please wait until a scene change be-fore you leave.

Coming and GoingPlease don't get up and leave during theperformance unless it's an emergency. Ifyou do need to leave or come back in,please wait until there is a scene change.

FidgetingPlease sit still. Bumping your elbows intoyour neighbors or kicking the seat in frontof you is annoying. If you have kids, pleasekeep them in control.

« Sight linesTry to avoid large hairdos and hats. Alsoavoid snuggling up to your date because itmight block someone's view behind you.

PhotosVideotaping and taking photos during theperformance is a distraction to the perform-ers, other patrons and is often illegal. Please don’t take photos during the show.

Other Etiquette Guidelines

« Please refrain from talking, humming, orsinging along with the show, exceptwhen encouraged to do so by the per-formers.

« Please wait for an appropriate time todig something out of your pocket or bag.

« Please do not make noise with candywrappers or popcorn bags.

« Outside food and beverages are notpermitted in the DeSoto Theatre.

« Go easy with the perfume and cologne;many people are allergic.

« The Overture (intro music at the start ofa musical theatre show) is a part of theperformance, so please be quiet when itbegins.

« Don't put or throw anything on thestage.

« Pay attention to the announcementsthat are being made prior to each showabout the rules and regulations and thelocation of the fire exits.

« Do not whistle or scream out to the per-formers, except for a Bravo or Brava inthe finale.

Now for some Dos:

« Do laugh in appropriate places.

« Do applaud with enthusiasm in the ap-propriate places.

« Do tell all your friends, after the show, what a great time you had.

« Do applaud when the performance isover; doing so shows the cast and thecrew how much you appreciated theirhard work and effort.

« Stand and applaud if you really thoughtthe show was great.

DeSoto Theatre HistoryIn 1928, O. C. Lam, the owner of Lam Amusement Company, laid plans to con-struct a new movie theater in downtown Rome, GA. Lam wanted to build a mov-ie palace - a luxurious theater modeled after New York’s Roxy. Lam purchaseda section of prime real estate on the main street of downtown Rome for$50,000.The building’s exterior and Georgian interior stylishly housed a number of recentmovie palace innovations. Designed as a “talkie” theater, it was the first venuein the South to be designed and built for sound pictures. Rome’s new houseboasted a Vitaphone sound system. And, the theater was heated and cooled byan innovative blower-fan air conditioning and tubular boiler system. Additionally, the theater was equipped with state-of-the-art fire safety equipment. Fitted withmany exits, the theater could be emptied in two minutes.Lam named his new movie palace for Hernando DeSoto, who was thought bymany historians to have passed through the area that is now Rome in 1540. TheDeSoto was completed at a cost of $110,000 and opened in August of 1929. Atthat time, the theater seated over 1000 patrons, making it one of the seven larg-est movie venues in Georgia at the time. The theater was an instant successand the pride of Rome. The DeSoto was one of the main sources of entertain-ment for Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama for the next fifty years. In 1982, the DeSoto closed as a movie theater, but soon reopened as the venuefor Rome’s local amateur theatre group, and continues to be a source of enter-tainment in downtown Rome. Rome Little Theatre has staged hundreds of per-formances in the 24 years it owned the DeSoto, and the theater is one of thevenues for the annual Rome International Film Festival. Now seating 500 pa-trons, the DeSoto still retains its Art-Deco marquee, French mirrored entrancehall, and Georgian interior design. In 2006, Rome Little Theatre created the His-toric DeSoto Theatre Foundation, in order to preserve and protect the building.

Thank you for coming to Rome Little The-atre’s production of Bleacher Bums! I grew up in the Midwest, where base-ball ruled the summer. My heroes wereGeorge Brett, Ozzie Smith, and the Cub great RyneSandberg. Too often, Iwould come home afterschool in the fall or spring, throw my homework on thebed, and sit down to catchthe Cubs play on WGN. Iwould watch the boys inblue play under “God’s ownlights,” think about thesmell of freshly cut grass, listen for the sound of woodstriking leather, and smile. When the game was over, Iwould throw little pop fliesover my bed and then safe-ly make the diving catch forthe last out, just like The Hawk, AndreDawson, might do. Even though mymother was a dyed-in-the-wool Cardinalsfan, she wasn’t able to keep me from mycalling as a member of the Cubby faithful.I can remember vividly watching theCubs win their division in 1984, and sub-sequently blow their shot at the WorldSeries. I’ve seen them do it over andover again, (‘89, ‘98, ‘03, ‘07, ‘08) but, like the late Ron Santo, I’ve never givenup faith that the next year would be THEyear. So what? Why would anyone careabout this exercise in futility all the waydown here in Rome, Georgia? The an-swer: this play isn’t only about the Cubs. It’s really about the human experience.

It’s about the willingness to hope for thebest in the face of futility, to believe in thepossibility of the impossible. It’s aboutthat moment we can all understand,

when we look defeat in theeye, wipe the tears fromour faces, and say “I stillbelieve.” It’s about inno-cence lost, and foundagain. It’s about friends, family, and fanatical loyalty. It’s about a love for thegame. It’s about baseball, and it’s about humanity. I think this cast has donea wonderful job of captur-ing this vision. The multi-talented Chris Davidsonhas faithfully brought Wrig-ley Field to our stage, andMichael Scott’s sound de-sign will have you feel like

you are sitting in the middle of the fieldduring a game. Producer Chuck Morrishas worked tirelessly to keep us on pointand working towards our goal. To every-one in the cast and crew, the RLT Boardof Directors, the membership, and ourloyal patrons, I say “thank you” from thebottom of my heart. My mother would often scold me afterlittle league games, saying “Chris, youcan’t hit the ball if you don’t swing thebat!” I think we took a big swing with thisshow, and I hope it’s a home run for you. Enjoy the show, and “Welcome to Wrig-ley Field!” P.S. This one’s for you, Mom.

Chris Parker

Chris would like tothank his wife for her support, andChris Parker and Chuck Morris andthe entire team that has worked sohard on this production. Growing upin Northern Illinois, Chris attendedseveral Cubs games at Wrigley Field, and is excited about reliving some ofhis youth!

Paul Culotta - DeckerUntil I moved to Georgia, I was a fa-natical Seattle Mariners fan from theirfirst game in 1977. So the Cubs-Car-dinals rivalry in Bleacher Bums isvery familiar, just like that betweenthe Mariners and the rightfully de-

spised NewYork Yan-kees. Aftermoving herein 2008, ofcourse I be-came an At-lanta Bravesfan, although Istill cheer likea fool whenthe Marinersbeat the Yan-kees. On theacting side, I

have been portraying villains and un-likable characters since Babes inToyland in 2009. So acting the role ofDecker, a true good guy (although abit vulgar at times), was a stretch. So

was having to learn well over 200lines! Finally, we discovered thatthere is no intermission in this play, just like a baseball game, so we castmembers had to soldier on for ninestraight innings of fun, fun baseball.Huge thank-yous go to Chuck Morris, our tireless producer, Chris Davidson, our talented set designer, and ChrisParker, our director. Chris had a greatvision for the play and directed withencouragement and superb sugges-tions, so that each cast membercould overcome all challenges and dohis/her very best. Finally, bigthankyous go to my four cats and mywife, Shari, who put up with mycountless hours of taking over thecats’ back porch to learn all thoselines! So now enjoy the game! Playball! Play ball!

Brian Hales - Herb Zikowski "Zig"Brian's first productions since movingfrom Texas were RLT's production ofA Christmas Carol and, Spamalot inwhich heplayedScrooge andKing Arthur, respectively.Brian wantedto relate thathis father wasa great base-ball fan. Thathis Springsand Sum-mers with hisdad alwaysincluded playing catch from the timehis dad got home to dinnertime.Though always pooped after a longdays work, there was time for hittingBrian some grounders or throwing aball sky high, so high they looked asthough they went out of sight, and

when he caught one on reentry hewas very, very proud. As a direct re-sult Brian can add to his bio that hewas all star 1st baseman for the BettyJane Elementary School Giants (lastplace), and all-star first baseman forthe Orangewood Elementary SchoolWhite Sox, (first place 3 years in arow). No autographs please! Brian'sdad passed last July and so in someway this production is a homage tothose, like Brian, who listened to thegames on the car radio with dad onwarm summer nights at the drive indiner. Or watched the home teamover soda pop and hot dogs. PlayBall!!
