REGIONAL COSTUMES, NORTHERN ITALY By Elba F. Gurzau

Costumes of Aviano. Venice

Among the many delightful and varied costumes of the regions of Northern Italy. I have chosen to describe thE: onE: from Aviano, Veneto . The reason for the choice is that we - the four of us who attended the Venice International Conference and Folk Festival - were so impressed by the group from Aviano that we decided to visit its members and sTudy their costumes at close range and iearn a few of the ir charming dances.

Aiso tile costumes from that little [own. only a few Il0urs' travel north from Venice are not difficult to coPv Here iJrE:: some of the speciai features of both the maie and female <,Hire

Characteristic of the woman 's costume are the brightlV colored ribbons she wears attached to her belt on the lef: side back They are souvenirs of boy friends. In The case where the boy and girl are engaged he wears a piece of the sam e ribbon 011 t'lis lapel which he has given I'lel

For head decorations the women had lovely silver ornaments, but ttley disappeared during the First World War , tl'IUS the girls cleverly made up the loss by using small Christmas tree decorations and attached them to little wire springs which they made themselves. A thin flower wire is rolled on a nail to make a spring out of it , then the nail IS removed

and a little shiny ball is attached to the end of the wire. Several springs and balls are clustered together making a small bouquet which is worn on one side of the head near the ear. These trimmings are delightful for they bob up and down as the girls dance. On the other side of the head is worn a cluster of artificial flowers of different coiors with pink predominating .

The men wear a rather vJide-brimmed alpine hat with little colored woolen balls standing up on the left Side . In the summer tIlese are replaced with fresh flowers each morning . The vests are of velvet with gold buttons or antique buttons , each of a different coior. The trousers have little pockets, front sailor opening , and little green or red tape trimmings toward the bottom of the pants with bow effect.

Both men and women wear white knitted stockings in a

iace pattern and homemade black velvet slippers, ven'

pOinted w'th flowers embrOidered on the toe
