SMALL SCALE PROJECTS

Aycock Residence

Program: The primary objective of this project is to create a successful conceptual master plan for the Aycock Residence that solves several aesthetic and functional needs.

Design: The following items represent the client’s property wish list:

- Flat area for entertaining (2 tables of 12)- Space for vegetables and herbs- Small scale amphitheater - Outdoor bathtub/shower- Space for mother-in-law to spend outside- Evergreen screening- Covered Parking off Street- Space for Book club meetings

To transition the vertical drop from the screen porch to the ground I added a deck. This space is great for relaxing in the shade and watch-ing out lover the yard. The expansive patio is perfect for those large dinner parties that will accomodate two 12 person tables. From the upper patio their is a two step access down to the fireplace area. Situ-ated to the right of the the fireplace is a fully private bath house with double shutters that open to overlook the fireplace. Stepping down into the yard there are various location of vegetable and herb gardens, cut flower gardens and eventually end up at the small bowl shaped amphitheatre. Around the rear of the house we added a sneak path to connect the carport to the space.

Heyd Residence

Program: Design a residential space that you would enjoy spending time in.

Design: I designed my mother’s backyard utilizing a variety of hardscapes. The main focus for this design was a space for the grandkids to enjoywhile she relax in her environment and watchmemories being made.

Design: Using hardscapes and a variety of native plant species to define each space into private outdoor rooms. The design of planting beds and access points create a clear flow of circulation around the property. The design scale is 1”=20’-00”

Waterfront Park

Waterfront Park Master Plan

Program: Copy a design of any landscape that intrigues us. Purpose is to get us out of our comfort zone and design something that you have never done before.

Design: In searching the internet I found this garden by the water that really caught my eye. I loved the transiotion of spaces as the elevation drops to the water. I liked the scale of this garden because it could be at a residence or a small public park. I loved the use of natural materials throughout the design. The design scale - 1/8”=1-00”

PARK(ing) Day is a annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into

“PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places.

Program: Temporarily transform metered parking spaces into green spaces to call atten-tion to the need for more urban open space. The theme was centered around local food and agriculture.

Design: Bamboo pergola enclosed by hay bales provides a sense of privacy in the open urban environment. The exterior barrier planters provide security from the ongoing traffic and the planting beds allow a curvilinear lawn access that meanders through the space. The design scale is 1/2”=1’-00”.

Program: Redesign a public college campus space into a sculpture garden while minimizing environmental impact.

Design: Minimize grading by utilizing the natural topography of the site. The Market Center and Amphitheater were incorporated into the hillside which reduced the environmental strain. Modified existing circulation, bioretention corridors, and introduced sculpture galleries into the landscape. The design scale is 1”=20’-00”

17Lamp Sculpture

The sculptures designed for the garden originated from components of nature. Light, water, insects are a few that were included in the oversized sculptures.

The visitor’s center is situated in the center of the plan providing a birds eye view of the sculpture garden property. From the patio of the Market Place Cafe, you can people watch or just catch up with friends over a cup of coffee between classes.

The Preserve @ Bishop Park

This infill project is located in Athens, GA at the corner of Oglethorpe Ave and Sunset Blvd. This property has direct access to Bishop Park directly across Oglethorpe Ave.

Program: Design a one block infill community with connection to Bishop Park.

Design: Small residential footprint with garages pushed to the front to minimize non permeable pavement. All residences have a private courtyard space and direct access to the greenspace and community amenities.

The design scale - master plan is 1”=30’-00” The Detail area is at a scale of 1”=10’-00”.

The community amenities provide function to the site by incorporating the rainwater management system into the greenspace walking trails and pavilion. This picturesque view is enjoyed from the community greenspace and from some of the residential lots.

Each residence has its own private landscaped courtyard with sneak paths patios and outdoor fireplaces. The properties have an evergreen screening between them giving each lot a private lawn area.

Key Map Caldwell Courtyard

Caldwell Courtyard offers students a place to go and socialize outdoors between classes. The design features a large oversized flagstone patio with a water feature as the focal point. All native plants to be installed per design layout as a teaching supplement to the plant identification class.

The new design provides better circulation, function and aesthetics to the college cam-pus. The section/elevation shows how the space will be by utilized students and faculty as a centralmeeting place or a great place to just hang out with a good book.

Program: Redesign Athens, GA City Hall landscape to incorporate a “City Plaza Memorial” space for the community.

Design: Based on clients wishes to introduce native planting species from all around the world to Athens. The sunken Plaza space is a representation of the globe which symbolizes one world. The Spirit of Athena statue was relocated in the center of the plaza space on the globe in the location of Athens, GA. The historical cannon was kept in the original location. Each planing bed is broken down into different continents with different representation of the native species from each region. The design scale - master plan is 1”=10’-00”.

Located in the center of downtown Athens, GA, One World Plaza offers the local community a new space and connecting it with the rest of the world. Residents will enjoy this urban community space as a meeting place or just to peruse around a look at the plantings from around the globe.

The overall spatial relationship is a comfortable urban setting surrounded with a constant pedestrian flow.

Oak Grove Master Plan

Program: Design a conservation community in Athens, GA total of 100 lots each having a minimum of 8,000 sqft.

Design: All roads and lot setbacks and sizes were designed to Clarke County’s local code specifications. Kept existing entrance off of Jefferson Hwy and added an entrance off of Lavender Rd to allow better circulation through out the site. Kept existinghardwoods through out the site and added community greenspace where site was naturally open. The design scale - master plan 1”=100’-00”

Old Mill Crossing

Old Mill Crossing Master Plan Design scale: 1” = 100’-00”

Program: Brownfield urban development redesign to include a train station on an existing rail line connecting to Atlanta.

Design: This multi-use development was designed with the whole life experience in mind. Residents have multiple housing options from lofts above the Market Place, to townhomes surrounded by greenspace. Every resident has full access to theresort style pool, tennis courts and clubhouse. The southern portion of the development is a train station on an existing rail line connecting to Atlanta. Residents in this community can commute on the train or work in the commercial area of the development.

Passengers can get off at the Market Place to meet their family for dinner at the restaurant overlooking the picturesque view. There is a raised lawn area at the west end of the plaza where children can run around and play while their parents can enjoy a cup of coffee and watch from the umbrella tables.

Program: Redesign Cleopas R. Johnson Park in Atlanta, GA which will include as its main feature a children’s playground accommodating age groups from four to twelve years old.

Design: Includes one tennis court, two basketball courts, a court side pavilion, a small 700sqft administrating building with restrooms, and modified existing circulation paths. Oversized playground with all types of playground equiptment to accommotate appropriate age groups. Moon shaped pergola helps shade the parents while overlooking their children. There are two large bioretention areas that filter the first flush and manage the rain water runoff. All of the existing hardwoods were kept on site. The design scale for the master plan is 1”=100’-00”.

Program: Design a 72 Par golf course on existing wetland pro-tected site.

Design: Includes 18 hole course, clubhouse with parking, resturaunt with patio, pro shop, putting and chipping pratice area, and a cart maintenance building. Holes #1, 9, 10, and 18 all meet at the club-house. All of the existing hardwoods were kept on site. The design scale - master plan is 1”=200’-00”.
