THIS YEAR’S THEME IS:MANDELA’S LIFE AND TIMES

• “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

• “Let freedom reign. The sun never set on so glorious a human achievement.”

• “I detest (hate) racism, whether it comes from a black man or a white man.”

• “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects others.”

MANDELA IN PRISON

THIS IS FROM A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE IN SUMMER 2013.

• President Barack Obama visits a bleak former prison island off the coast of South Africa to pay tribute to ailing anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela.

• Mr Mandela was imprisoned on Robben Island for 18 of the 27 years he spent in jail before becoming the first black president of South Africa.

• The 94-year-old Mr Mandela's faltering health has been the backdrop to President's eight-day Africa trip. South Africa's government says his condition is "critical but stable".

• The US leader describes Mandela as a "personal hero."
