Creating Your Ultimate Gathering and Entertaining Space

By Linda Romersa

Creating a unique space for family gathering and entertaining in your home is fun and rewarding. You have probably noticed when visiting friends and family that each recreation space is unique and reflects the owner's design taste with a sense of whimsy. There is no wrong design for a recreation space whether it is the family room or a basement area. This is your space to let you and your family's personality and design style come through. With the multitude of furniture, games, and decorative art and accessories available on the internet; get-ting the right pieces is as simple and easy as click and go. The best way to begin is to simply look carefully at the area you have chosen to create your entertainment space. Note permanent fixtures such as doors or stairs that will affect how you place your decorative items. A sketch may be help-ful.

Next, consider the decorating theme for the area. A family discussion over dinner often leads to some unique ideas. You may want to use a theme based on a country or culture you like; such as, Italian, Hawaiian, The Far East, or a Caribbean Motif. You

may want to build your theme on a particular era such as the Wild West, or an English Pub (Often

works well when you have a lower ceiling as in many English Pubs.) A more formal Victorian Era look may fit your style, or perhaps the exciting night life of a Vegas Lounge. If you like wine, why not go for a Wine Cellar look. If you lean to-wards beer; posters and steins from around the world create a relaxed and fun feeling. Another simple motif is the Sports Bar. This is also one that easily becomes a family project. Sports posters and photos of your favorite teams and players with other sports memorabilia create the mood and feel often focused on a large TV where family and friends can meet and enjoy their favorite teams. When considering your decorative items, make sure you allow enough free space around game tables or the TV for everyone to enjoy without the feeling of being cramped. As you can see, there is almost unlim-ited ambiance that you can create with a little thought and planning.

Simply consider the area's space, layout, and feel, your family's inclinations, and how the theme that you will create will interface with the balance of your home decor. With a little imagination, the correct wall paint colors, readily available decorative accessories, you will create an entertaining area the whole family will enjoy and flock to.

Five Popular Trends In Kitchen Remodeling By Dave A Hunt

Kitchen remodeling is a great way to breathe new life into an older home and the best news is that you may be able to recoup quite a bit of the costs involved when the time comes to sell your house. Remodeling Magazine's 2010-2011 Cost vs. Value survey estimates that homeowners can expect to receive about 69 percent of the costs associ-ated with a major kitchen remodel in a mid-level home back in their pocket when their home is purchased. That percent-age may vary a little depending on where the house is lo-cated, but few other home improvement projects offer that much return on your investment.

What's Popular in Kitchens Today? The current economy has many homeowners discovering their inner gourmet chef. Families are finding out that cook-ing and eating at home can not only help their budgets - it might be a lot more fun, too. Large open kitchens that invite family gatherings while meals are prepared are popular now, but the resident chef also wants a work space that's efficient and user-friendly. A few indulgent upgrades to make cooking more enjoyable are welcome additions, too. When planning your kitchen remodel, consider these cur-rent trends:

• Island Convenience - many kitchen remodeling pro-jects feature a prominent island workspace that includes a cook-top and adjacent prep sink. Consider installing a goose neck faucet to make filling pots and pans a little eas-ier. Design Note - don't make your island too large. It should be a convenience rather than a hindrance to work-ing efficiently. • Clear the Clutter - quite a few cabinet manufacturers now offer accessories that make it easy to get organized by clearing the clutter off your counter tops. Pull out trays, spice racks, and pantry cabinets can put an end to the frus-trating searches for ingredients you've recently seen but can't recall where and give you plenty of counter space for culinary projects.

• Double Ovens - ask your kitchen contractor about the possibility of installing a double oven in your kitchen remod-eling project. Even if you already have a single oven cabi-net, they can often be modified to accept a double unit. A double oven can make meal coordination a breeze and if one of the units has convection capability, expect your meals to be ready in a fraction of the normal time. • Make Time for Breakfast - a kitchen that opens to your living area can be a perfect situation for adding a breakfast bar during your remodeling project. Your kitchen contractor can build a knee wall against the rear of the base cabinets, add a counter top that matches the rest of your kitchen, and all you need are bar stools. Design Note - make sure the bar overhang is adequately supported by brackets underneath to reduce the chance of accidents. • Let the Sun Shine In - sunshine can put just about anyone in a good mood. If your kitchen remodeling plans call for your sink to be on an outside wall, ask your contrac-tor about adding a garden window at counter top height for bird and flower gazing. Design Note - depending on your climate, having water lines on an outside wall is not always a good idea. If you live in an area subject to winter freezes, bring the lines up on the living space side of the exterior wall or make sure they're adequately insulated.

Eruo-Bath Pictorial—Before & After No room for a shower? Consider this option. A Shower/Toliet/Vanity all in one. A drain is placed in the middle of the floor, the entire room (floor, walls and sometimes ceiling) is tiled. A vanity that can withstand water or a pedestal sink can also be installed. A perfect solution for smaller spaces, turning your half bath into a full bath!

The Elisabethmarkt is a daily food market in Schwabing, a district of Munich, Germany. Deep in the heart of Schwabing, the inhabitants (and of course all the visitors) have been able to supply themselves with fresh groceries for more than 100 years. This market, which was named after the Austrian Empress Sisi, offers the entire range from meat and poultry, fruit and vegetables to delicatessen and snacks.

Elisabethplatz and Elisabethstrasse were named in 1898 after the Empress Elisabeth of Bavaria of Austria, better known as Sisi. She was the daughter of Duke Max of Bavaria and the cousin of King Ludwig II of Bavaria In 1854 she married Emperor Franz Joseph I, after whom the Franz-Joseph-Straße had already been named in 1894. The couple occasionally spent time with their relatives in Schwabing. The market on Elisabethplatz was founded in 1931. Its roots, however, go back much farther because the Elisabethmarkt developed from the former market at Maffeianger, founded in 1880, which had to be moved from Maffeianger to Elisabethplatz due to planned road con-structions. Thus, the market on Elisabethplatz came into being following the decision of the municipal authorities on 1. October 1903. During the mobilisation for World War II the market had its own inscription office, where it was possible to sign up for war loans. The market itself consisted of a few permanent market stalls as well as daily stands, which the municipal authorities auctioned every five years or which were raffled by the market inspector. The market hall on Elisabethplatz which was already built in 1903, was destroyed by bombs in World War II, which also severely damaged the entire market. Business, however, was maintained as far as possible by the improvisa-tional skills of the vendors and the city council. After World War II the market was restored and the market hall was replaced by pavilions which are still the main trait of this market today. The pavilion which is called the "Milchhäusl", or Milk Hut, is located towards Nordendstraße and dates from the late 1900s. The construction was initiated by the physician and teetotaller Carl Brendel, who personally supervised the distribution of milk every morning from 5 a.m. on. His priority was the population’s health, especially the task of “keeping the poison of alcohol from the people”. Yet, in the long term he was not entirely successful - nowadays a small restaurant with a beer garden is located here.

“We bought our Floating Home in September of 2009 at Jantzen Beach Moorage. We are from California so we weren’t able to go to our new home much the first winter and subsequently had broken pipes with some structural damage. We were lucky enough to meet a really great neighbor at the moorage, Cary Mumford from Black Forest Remodel & Tile. In talking we realized Cary was a contractor and since then Cary and Black Forest Remodel & Tile have done a remodel of our bathroom, extended our living room and added a second story bedroom. Since our home is all natural wood inside and out we needed someone who knew how to work with wood, and Cary was our man. We are extremely satisfied with the work that Cary and Black Forest Remodel & Tile has accomplished. It is extremely difficult being out of state when you know construction is going on but

again everything has worked out great, we are more than satisfied. I feel that honesty in construction is hard to find these days, but I feel we have found it.” Melinda Head/Phyllis Allen , Grass Valley, CA

“We’ve had Black Forest in our home for several projects, including a major bathroom/basement remodel, flooring, drywall, concrete, windows, cabinets, and tile work. Matthias and Cary are genu-inely nice guys who take the time to listen to our wishes or problems, and we’ve always felt that their work is customized to our specific requirements rather than a one-size-fits-all kind of solution. The goal is clearly perfection rather than simply “good enough”. Their prices are reasonable and their schedule has usually been pretty flexible. We get constant compliments on our beautiful travertine bathroom with radiant floor heating and a steam shower. I am also secretly amused when other handymen come to the house, because every one of them, without fail, asks who tiled our kitchen floor.

I stay at home with our 3 kids, so I’ve come to especially appreciate how comfortable and friendly the guys are. They’re polite, communicative, and they respect my furniture and living areas and are careful to protect and clean up the space afterwards. If the kids come to watch them, they explain things and are safety-conscious, without being annoyed or slowing down. They don’t stink, make crude remarks, or give off any creepy vibes, either, which definitely helped make the process of living through a remodel comfortable for me and the kids. My husband likes knowing the plan and hashing out the details of the job, which Matthias and Cary do readily and easily, but they can also explain the tech talk in a way that makes sense to me. If you’re look-ing for not only quality workmanship, but also aesthetics, functionality, and creative solutions, these are the guys to call.”
