Media Converters
» What are they?• Media converters are devices that
convert electrical Ethernet signals (CATx cable) into optical Ethernet signals (fiber cable).

Media Converters
» Why are they needed?• To extend beyond the 100-meter maximum electrical Ethernet
limit.
• To convert to fiber between buildings to prevent ground loop electrical current issues and lightning penetration.
• To create a low-cost, small-profile fiber interface for embedded legacy copper–based equipment.
• To easily connect copper switch uplinks to redundant fibers to prevent interruption of service.

Ethernet Extenders
»What are they?• Ethernet Extenders are devices that convert the
Ethernet protocol signals into another protocol that supports longer distances and then at the far end, converts them back to the Ethernet protocol. Typically an xDSL protocol is used (VDSL, SDSL, SHDSL).

Ethernet Extenders
» Why are they needed?• To extend beyond the 100-meter maximum electrical Ethernet
limit.
• To use existing installed voice cabling pairs as Ethernet copper media.
• To use legacy coaxial cable to extend Ethernet to IP cameras.

»What are they?• PoE injectors are devices that
“inject” power on a non-powered Ethernet link to create a fully compliant PoE Ethernet connection.

PoE Injectors/Repeaters
»What are they?• PoE repeaters are devices that take a
PoE signal and regenerate the signal to achieve distances longer than 100 meters (up to 300 meters).

PoE Injectors/Repeaters
» Why are they needed?• PoE PD (“powered devices”) are becoming more common.• Legacy switches typically do not have PoE capability.
- Either need to replace switch blades and power supplies (if equipped).
- Or replace the legacy switch with a new PoE capable unit.• Providing PoE power from switches creates extra heat within
the switches—lowers MTBF (especially 30-watt 802.3at PoE).• PoE injectors are easy to install, prevent heat buildup within the
switch, and allow legacy switches to continue to be used.
