News2 BizBlitz Issue 21 August 2013

The ban of alcohol sponsorship epitomises an Irish solution to an Irish problem. Alcohol abuse and addiction is the most serious social problem in Ireland today and acts as a catalyst to so many other problems even outside of the obvious health issues. Alcohol abuse is unquestionably linked to issues such as depression, suicide, domestic violence, debt and poverty. The infiltration of alcohol into every facet of Irish life has certainly not happened overnight and the idea that banning a few billboards or brandings on a football shirt will somehow sever the link between Irish people and their love for the sauce is naïve at best and dangerously misguided at worst. Go to any wedding, christening or funeral in this country and alcohol takes its place as the single unifier of the attendants. If the Government truly cared about tackling Ireland’s unhealthy relationship with alcohol they would invest in education for young people about the dangers of it. They would not chuckle as the president of the united States raised a glass of the black stuff for a cringe-worthy photo-op during his visit to the emereld Isle or for that matter invite the Queen of england to a brewery.

Therein lays the hipocrosy of the Government sudden moral high ground when it comes to alcohol sponsorship of sporting events. They are more than happy to use our reputation as bar flies and boozers to help sell Ireland as a tourism destination, while simultaneously preaching about the danger of associating alcohol with various sporting and social events.

If the government were serious about tacking the issues of alcohol abuse in this country, here are three suggestions that as to how this could be achieved:

1. More police on the beat – how often do we ever see Gardai on the beat in the city centre on a Friday or Saturday night? In any other european city police are stationed throughout the city centre to deter antisocial behaviour brought on by alcohol. Many areas in Dublin city are no-go areas on weekend nights due to violence and intimidation.

2. Staggered closing hours – Having thousands of people thrown out on the streets at 2.30am at night will inevitably lead to problems. Staggering closing hours would not

just lead to calmer streets, it would also stop the rush of binge drinking once closing time arrives (anything to keep our night going longer!)

3. More accountability for bar staff – This

is probably the most controversial. In all my years of socialising throughout Ireland I cannot remember a single time where someone has been refused a drink due to excessive inebriation. In other countries, including Australia, bar staff will routinely refuse to serve a drunken customer, sending a clear message that personal responsibility and accountability are valued more than a quick buck.

I am not naïve enough to think that marketing of products have no effect on people. put simply – if it didn’t work they wouldn’t do it. I am sure our lawmakers would argue that this is just the first step in a long running campaign to break the cycle of alcohol abuse in this country, and that change is slow and cannot happen overnight. For the nations sake I hope that is correct. However I cannot help but think that if the Heineken Cup gets renamed the Vegan-Soy latte-Zumba Cup, the bars in the Aviva Stadium would still be jammed to the rafters.

“Should Alcohol Sponsorship Be Banned From Sports?”Story continued from page one

IT’S that time again! The summer has flown by but at least this year the children can return to the books with some sweet and happy memories of long days playing happily under the sun. leaving current cut backs aside preparing for going back to school can be fun if you have a well thought out plan.

The first thing to do is to make an assessment of the school wardrobe. Sorting out what needs to be replaced or bought new; and what can be mended or altered to fit the younger ones. Bear in mind that the uniform in all its controversial glory is a good idea! Think of the stress of having to sort out ordinary clothing each and every day! Always try to invest in uniforms as hard wearing as possible and it’s worth it to look after the garments and instill respect for them in the kiddies from the beginning!

Make a list of everything you need from large to small item and from head to toe. Besides back to school clothing there are also provisions to

consider like new bags, lunch boxes and other supplies from pen to pin. Many shops at this time of year now have sales on art supplies and stationary products. This is an excellent time to stock up on the Rainy Day Cupboard with craft items as well particularly in these measured times.

It is a good idea to explain to the children about your back to school budget depending on their age of course. If possible take them with you to purchase the items. This way there will be an understanding of why service and durability must win out over fashion and frivolity. But remember to give them a little treat of their own choosing. let each child pick out a scrapbook for the coming year and encourage them to return to this old time craft of building memories. Make the first day at school as special as possible. Take a couple of pictures! Make a nice breakfast and fill it with excitement! pack a

healthy lunch and include a little treat as well as a note to wish them well during the coming year and reassure them of your love. Make sure to be on time to collect them and that evening try to have their favorite dinner prepared. Chat about their day!

A good idea is to lay the clothing out the night before each school day. even socks and shoes! establish a basket system for all things school related with the name of each child on each one. This is a very good way to avoid articles going missing at the most inopportune moments. unveil this system if you haven’t done it before, the night before the first day at school. Our children grow so quickly. Make the most of them returning if you can. each year is a huge milestone in their little lives. parents play an enormous part in the school years being the best in a child’s life.

A substantial number of people are not obtaining vital social welfare payments that they are fully entitled to collect.

A new report published by The Citizens’ Information Board (CIB) reveals that serious information deficits within the social welfare system are resulting in people getting incorrect, confusing or incomplete information.

The revelation appears in the latest Social policy Quarterly Report that highlights the information deficit that exists within the social welfare system. What is even more worrying is that the report reveals that in many cases important, relevant information is not being given at all.

The publication highlights the three concerns most regularly reported to The CIB as regards information deficits are:

• Incorrect information being given by SW staff to applicants and/or incorrect decisions taken on claims.

• Confusing or incomplete information being given, and

• Important information not being given at all.

The publication reveals details of a

case involving a client of the Citizens’ Information Service (CIS)in Wexford who is a widower on Ce Scheme. His wife died 10 months ago. He rang the pensions Section of the Department of Social protection who told him he had to apply for his Widower’s pension within a year or he would lose his entitlement. The CIS rang Section to check and were told the same. They asked to see operational guidelines stating this and were told it says it on form. The form says to apply within 12 months or you may lose some payment. If client had not come to CIS he would have given up Ce scheme because he thought he would lose his Widow’s pension entitlement if he did not apply within 12 months.

In another case, a Jobseekers Applicant had been self-employed and had recently closed her business. She applied for Supplementary Welfare Allowance (SWA) while waiting for the JA claim to be processed. Her husband is self-employed with an income of €9,000pa (€173 per week). Social Welfare staff refused to accept the SWA application, telling her that she is ineligible as her husband is self-employed for more than 29 hours per week. The guidelines clearly state that this is for claimant only and limitation is not applied to the self-employment of the spouse. They have a dependent child. She should have

been awarded €166.80 SWA per week. Such information deficits can and do leave people without welfare payments to which they are (or might be) entitled.

The report goes on to explain how these are compounded by Social Welfare processing delays that continue to cause hardship and distress for many citizens.According to the study, “the stress caused by lengthy processing delays” is exacerbated by the fact that people frequently cannot get through to the relevant department sections by telephone to ask about their claims.”

Additionally, the extremely arduous waiting times experienced by callers to Social Welfare information lines, often over twenty minutes increases the overall distress.

The CIB recommended that additional resources, in addition to a discretionary fast-tracking system, should be made available to speed up the application and appeals process. They suggest that a more holistic approach to information-giving would help to reduce the instances in which people are not claiming payments that would be most advantageous to them.

The report also encourages the availability of additional resources in order to eradicate unacceptable processing and appeals delays.

Do You know Your Social WelfareEntitlements?Written by Joe Shields

TAcklE povErTY TrAp AnD Don’T cuT WElFArE pAYmEnTS: Ó SnoDAighReSpONDING to a report from the Department of Social protection’s Citizens Information Board that welfare is stopping people taking up jobs, Sinn Féin spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD said the solution is to tackle the poverty traps not cut welfare.

“This report should be interpreted cautiously. It’s from an agency inside the minister’s own department and it could give her the excuse she is looking for to cut social welfare payments.

“The reality is that only a tiny minority of people are better off on welfare. The vast majority are receiving payments that are

not even adequate for a decent standard of living. Comprehensive research by the eSRI found that more than 70% of those receiving welfare would, in fact, be significantly better off in work and close to 95% would gain financially from employment.

“The structure of the rent supplement scheme is indeed a problem. Rent supplement is lost in its entirety if full-time work is taken up. However 88% of those on unemployment payments do not even receive it.

“So what is required is a targeted response to that scheme not general social welfare cuts affecting all recipients. Rather than fix

the rent supplement scheme, last year the minister cut jobseekers benefit, fuel and back to school allowances. “The danger is she will do the same again this year and cut social welfare generally rather than tackling the specific identified poverty traps.

“For the minority who are facing a disincentive to work, the solution lies in social housing, more affordable childcare and a more flexible social welfare systems to make taking a job a realistic financial option. None of this will be remedied by more social welfare cuts.”

ST. mAElruAin’S FloWEr FESTivAl& FESTivAl oF hAnDS

ST. MAelRuAIN’S Flower Festival will take place in St. Maelruain’s parish Church in Tallaght Village from September 26th to 29th.

The designer of the Flower Festival is Richard Haslam, a member of the Interflora gold medal winning team at Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows in the u.K. He holds a National Diploma of the Society of Floristry and is a member of the American Institute of Floral Designers. He is well known across europe, America, South Africa and Japan.

The theme of our Flower Festival will be “The Circle of life”. There will be 23 flower arrangements in the church, each representing a stage in the circle of life, beginning with birth, education and so on through to “end of life”. The arrangers will work throughout the previous week under the guidance of Richard Haslam, to bring this special festival to St. Maelruain’s. This is an exciting event and is unique in as much as we understand that there has never been an event like it held in Tallaght. We look forward to welcoming many visitors to the historic and beautiful St. Maelruain’s Church.

In the adjacent parish Centre, there will be a “Festival of Hands” at which there will be exhibitions of handcrafts by local people. exhibitions confirmed include: art, photography, calligraphy, knitting and stitching, handmade cards, handbags, jewellery, stone work, woodturning, silk painting and nail art. local man Benny Myers, Beekeeper of the Year, will be there at various times to talk about bee keeping and tales of Tallaght in years gone by.

In the small hall, refreshments will be available, with an emphasis on home baking. All will be welcome to come in for a tea or coffee and a chat in the cosy surroundings.

The Festival will open on Thursday, September 26th at 7.30pm with a concert in the church, at which choirs from The Now and Then production Company, The I.C.A. Choir, The leinster Singers and the senior choir from Firhouse Community College will perform. entry to the concert will be €8. The halls will not be open on the night of the concert, but the ticket will allow the bearer entry to the crafts on one day over the week end.

MAY you live in dangerous times’ might ultimately be the new global curse for the times we live in. We have witnessed a period of a heavier handed foreign policy throughout the unofficial ‘third world’ countries, by the allies.

As a reporter of many years from the nations caught in the crossfire of conflict, there likely isn’t a better qualified person than Jeremy Scahill, to detail all of the aspects of united States foreign policy, in the post 9-11 world. The book is ‘Dirty Wars – the world is Battlefield’, which has also seen the launch of a documentary film, of the same name.

Rather than simply fall into the entirely conservative route of a chronology of strategies and death counts, Scahill went to the ‘scene’ to get excerpts

from fellow reporters, armed forces personnel, citizens, and so on. Scahill’s prologue chillingly asks us to remember those uS citizens who have been assassinated by their own government. However, the current president also comes in for an author’s critique, for his lack of termination on the assassination policy.

A key point to understanding the situation today is to look at the change of administrations at the 21st century, and how the Bush administration believed that they were on a ‘mission’ to reverse what they saw as a foreign policy ‘neglect’ during the 90s. Slogans like the ‘war on terror’ are still imprinted in the minds of most of us, and every procedure of these years is outlined.

B.A. DegreeFor Mature

Students

IN the coming weeks colleges and schools will be starting their new semester, with many new school leavers heading into college for the first time and a few adults returning to education. It’s anxious time for many but also exciting as they embark on a course of their choice to better their own futures. But it’s not gonna be easy for many with cuts to courses and grants alike leaving many in a difficult position, continue with my course or drop out and keep my payments?

Over the last few weeks I have been trying desperately to find the money to fund my way through college but with jobs scarce and hard to get and not being eligible for BTeA (Back To education Allowance) it would appear that I

will have no choice but to give up my place and remain on jobseekers.

I have visited both my local social welfare office and citizens information centre only to find out that because of doing a FeTAC level 5 last year on a completely different course on which I received no assistance because of a badly timed job loss, while waiting for the course that I wanted to come up again, I am entitled to no help again this year. Now with only weeks to go before my course is due to start I am faced with struggling to get through the next year by relying solely on my family or giving up the course I have been waiting for.

On further research it would appear that I’m

not the only person in this position, when I got in touch with my potential college they informed me that they have been handing out confirmation of place rejection letters to people who also can’t get grants or assistance from the government.

It would appear to be nearly impossible to actually get help to go back to education as the guidelines seem to be aimed more towards people who have been on the dole a long time, than to actually help those who want to help themselves by trying to get work and courses.

On appealing the decision that I’m entitled to nothing every door has been slammed in my face and I worry that if this is the case for numerous other people then unemployment may be at a

stalemate. Its worrying to see the numbers that my college alone has lost to this system and I can not help to wonder if would be best to just stay on the dole because at least next I’ll be entitled to something, but being someone who always needs to be doing something it seems like a very suffocating option.

For now every door is closed as I and the many like me run out of time, what will become of us? And why is the government making it so difficult to go back to college, it seems to be every year at the budget that something to do with education is cut or decreased. But for now we’ll have to make do with what we have and make a very difficult decision.

Attention Journalists

SepTeMBeR was once viewed as the beginning of a new year and in some religions it is viewed as a time for atonement and introspection. I see it as a golden bridge between summer and winter; a time to stand and take stock and observe the changes in nature. To me it is a time for turning over a new leaf and allowing the old ones to blow away in the wind like the leaves of autumn all in order of restoration.

The way I see it September is a good time for making resolutions because at the end of the summer the chances are we are well rested. So much so that your mind is clearer and you will be able to draw up your resolves in a much more alert state of mind than in January, the usual time for making new plans, when you are still exhausted from the festive season. And let’s face it at that time of year

all we are really interested in is doing just what we must in order to stay afloat in what can be rough seas both financially and generally.

Resolutions made in January are not always a good plan because we are quite possibly worn out in body, mind and spirit and they are usually destined for failure.

Whereas Januarys resolutions are all about willpower and personal guilt, September’s ones are brought about more so by lateral thinking. It could be you want to learn a new skill or that you would like to draw up a new health and wellbeing plan. Or even a new commitment for catching up with distant relatives and friends! Buy a really nice notebook and list the things you would like to do in priority from 1 to 10 and listen to your inner thoughts on each idea. What is the most important thing to you

right now? That goes on the top of the list and so on down the line. As the weeks go by you will be amazed at your progress because in pacifying your inner desires you are really feeding your soul as well which can’t be a bad thing. It’s like you are working on becoming a much better you!

September is a truly beautiful month. Its autumn wardrobe is full to the brim with golden browns, rustic hues and burnished earth. But as is natures way it’s a month quite willing and prepared for change. It goes by the old adage “Out with the old, In with the new”

We can be like September in that if there are aspects about ourselves that we think we need to shed or alter now is the time to do it. learn the new skill. Go on that diet, whether it’s to gain or lose weight! Join that interesting club you have been

pondering on. Or perhaps you want to take the plunge and look for a better occupation. How about voluntary work at the weekends? What ever the idea is that’s toying with your brain.

You don’t have to tell anyone about your resolutions. It’s less pressurizing to keep your plan to yourself and a lot more fun too because it’s your own business and nobody else’s. One way or another it’s all about positivity and change for the better and it is surprising how much the whole project can shorten the winter as well as give you a lift.

Then when winter really sets in, well it’s a new you, ready and waiting for the new growth to begin again in a few weeks time. And when everyone else is feeling the urge to make their January resolutions you will be well on your way to your goal. And you’ll have been working on it since September!

ApplICATIONS from authorised personal Insolvency practitioners will be accepted from Monday the 9th of September, according to the Insolvency Service of Ireland.

The Insolvency Service of Ireland offers debt reliefs to personal Insolvency practitioners and Approved Intermediaries on behalf of insolvent debtors under the personal Insolvency Act. Debtors are encouraged to apply for a debt relief notice if they have already made contact with their creditors and explained their difficulties in making repayments. The aim of the ISI is to “help restore people who are insolvent to solvency in a fair, transparent and equitable way”.

lorcan O’Connor, Director of the ISI said: “We are pleased to announce that we can start accepting applications on behalf of people who are insolvent very shortly. This is the culmination of intensive efforts since the ISI’s establishment in March of this year to bring about the necessary infrastructure

to facilitate the operation of the three new debt reliefs introduced by the personal Insolvency Act, as amended.”

Applicants will be able to meet with Approved Intermediaries to discuss their situation and options before they apply. The ISI will be publishing a number of statutory instruments by early September that detail the three new debt relief processes before this date. The consultation period offers stakeholders in companies, the opportunity to review the draft and highlight any changes or additions that they believe would help ensure the introduction of this new debt relief provided for under the Act.

Authorisation of the pIps and AIs began earlier in August. The ISI are processing large numbers of practitioner applications and the numbers are expected to increase in the next few weeks. Since the launch of the ISI Information Campaign at the end of April, there has been over 4,500 enquires and 55,000 hits to the website.

MOST young people have made some sort of embarrassing drunken mistake on nights out with friends but have been lucky enough that evidence of such has not appeared online for the world to see.

However at Christmas 2012 a secondary school student was filmed at Ray’s pizzeria in Temple Bar shouting at some guy. The teenage girl who was clearly well past the point of a little drunk and was clearly very worked up as she ranted at the young man, went on about how her father worked for KpMG and how the young man’s life was pointless and he was broke because he shopped at pennys. The whole incident was filmed and later uploaded to YouTube and within hours it went viral with people all around the world tuning in to watch the teenager’s freak out.

YouTube did their best to take the video down but every time that one link was shut down another one would

appear, while pranksters even went as far as to remix the video by putting it to the tune of popular songs.

The school girl was humiliated and was subjected to a tirade of abuse on her social media sites and eventually was forced to shut them down. eventually due to the vigilance of YouTube and the insistence of KpMG management the videos were successfully removed and the girl was allowed the breathing space to try to get back to normal after her drunken mistake.

But the internet has claimed another victim as pictures of Slane girl have appeared on most social media sites in the wake of eminem’s concert, which had 80,000 people in attendance. The teenage girl who is still in secondary school was photographed performing intimate acts at the concert with two separate guys. The photos have appeared on Facebook and Twitter with people posting nasty comments and jokes at the teens’ expense. Clearly

the young girl never meant for her exploits at a very alcohol fuelled event to be documented and broadcast to the world, but it has since attracted a lot of unwanted media attention. The story of Slane girl has been printed in a number of newspapers, and media sites. However Facebook and Twitter have taken action against anyone who has reposted the unfortunate pictures by suspending their accounts until a full investigation into who put them up first has been conducted. But unfortunately the damage has been done for this young girl as almost everyone with access to the internet in Ireland has either seen or heard of the pictures and the teen is reaping the unfortunate consequences of her actions in a very public way.

Both of these teenagers had only been out enjoying themselves with friends when they made such silly mistakes, which isn’t really that different from any of the rest of us.

These two separate events of school going girls and their drunken antics has really brought to light the need for people to be more careful on nights out, and watch out for unwanted cameras. In this technological age where every phone is a camera and every phone is connected to the internet, young women and men need to be more vigilant when drinking. Not only for their own future and well being but for the people around them who will also suffer the consequences of such a public humiliation. The two young girls who have already been affected partly due their own stupidity and partially because of the cruelty of the people who they encountered, will have to rebuild their lives and try to deal with the aftermath of their public humiliation with the help of family and friends.

Buying a used car can be a minefield. But is a great way of cutting the cost of your driving as most new cars lose around 40% of their value in the first year. But there are risks so it’s important to take your time rather than rush into any deal, and to buy as far as possible with your head rather than your heart. There are a few simple things to remember and steps to take, that will make the experience easier and assist you in avoiding being ripped-off.

7. Checking the carMake sure you have a thorough look over the car yourself, and best of all, have an independent mechanic or automotive centre check it out properly on a hoist. It could save you thousands by revealing mechanical problems and previous damage.

- always look at the car in full daylight, never in the dark or in rain that could conceal body marks, dents, rust and other defects- check under the car, the bonnet and the interior carpet for rust and signs – such as welding marks -- which may show the car has been in a crash- take a look at the tyres to make sure they’re in good condition - get down in front of each front wheel and look along the length of the car. Both front wheels should be directly in front of the rear ones – if they’re not, it could mean the car has been in a crash - check the gaps between the body panels are equal – if they’re not, the car could have been refitted badly, or may have been in a crash- start the car with a cold engine, which will make is easier to reveal problems like poor starting or too much smoke

8. Test drive the car- before you set off, turn the steering wheel from one lock to the other to make sure there is no screeching, banging, or knocking- to test the handbrake, pull it on and then try to drive off very gently. It should hold the car back- listen for strange noises from the engine, and don’t let the seller distract you by talking or turning up the radio- drive on as many different roads surfaces as possible- use all the gears, and check the gear change is slick and smooth

9. Negotiating the priceThe price is the price, but there’s often leeway for bargaining.Make a list of any faults you found with the car, or any work that might need doing, and calculate how much this could add to the price. From this position, negotiate the price with the seller. Ask the seller what their best price is, make a lower offer and then say nothing. They can only either turn you down, accept your offer or name another price closer to yours.

10. Paperwork and payment- Make sure all the paperwork is in order, and that you have original versions (never photocopies) everything … registration papers, service history and logbook- If you’re making a payment or even just a deposit, get a receipt and make sure the seller’s full details are on it

information from www.carsguide.com

1. Set your budgetWork out how much you can afford to spend, and don’t forget to include registration, insurance and regular maintenance and running costs. Both for insurance, and if you’re going to get a loan, shop around to get the best rate.

2. Do your researchIt’s important to have a thorough look at what’s out there before buying a used car. To get an idea of a model’s current market price, spend some time searching our used car ads online or in your local newspaper. Also check out our price guide to help you avoid paying too much.

Be wary if you find a used car where the price is much lower than the market suggests it should be. If you’re determined to take it further, have the car checked thoroughly. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

3. Find the right carBrowse cars by body type, make or price to find out which make and model might suit you. Go window shopping by make and model, age, location… and all kinds of other helpful details.

Read reviews of the car you’re looking for. Check the latest car news to see if a new model is coming -- which can reduce the price of previous models when it arrives.

4. Contact the sellerAnd when you do, don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions…- how long have they had the car- why are they selling it- has it ever been damaged- what condition is it in- will it meet a RWC- does it have any `bad habits’

5. Looking at the carIf the seller is a private party rather than a dealer, always go to their home address. Don’t arrange to meet them somewhere. Check that the home address is the same as the one on the registration certificate. Take a printout or copy of the seller’s advertisement with you to check that details like the odometer numbers are accurate.

6. Check the car’s historyNo matter how genuine the seller seems, you should check the history of the car to make sure it’s not stolen, encumbered by an outstanding loan, or even a previous write-off. Get the car’s VIN number and check against the databases in which it’s registered.

10 Tips On Buying A Used Car

THe Irish public spent more than €6.3billion on alcohol in 2012, according to the Central Statistics Office.

The figure is up from 2011, showing a 1.2% increase. The data from the CSO also shows that the Irish public are spending more on alcohol than on clothing and footwear. Alcohol Action Ireland has said that the figures are worrying and has asked the government to help address Ireland’s dependent relationship with alcohol.

“More than €6.3 billion is a huge figure for a relatively small country like Ireland to spend on alcohol in a year and it's particularly worrying that our total spend on alcohol in 2012 increased for the second year in a row and was more than we spent on it than in any year since 2008," said Conor Cullen, Communications Officer with Alcohol Action Ireland.

"To put this figure into context, at 7.7% of our total personal expenditure, it's far more than twice what we spent on clothing and footwear last year. However, we must remember that alcohol is not a grocery or another everyday household item, even though this is how alcohol is currently

marketed and sold throughout this country."

High alcohol sales are linked to the dangerous amount of consumption among the country’s population. According to Alcohol Action Ireland, “Irish adults binge drink more than adults in any other european country. A quarter of drinker’s report that they binge drink every week.” Another statistic from the national alcohol charity states that in 2012, the average Irish person aged 15+ drank over 11.6 litres of pure alcohol.

Alcohol Action Ireland has urged the public to remember that alcohol is a very harmful substance that causes a range of problems.

"Alcohol-related harm costs Ireland over an estimated €3.7 billion a year, and that's not counting the vast human costs, such as the three people dying every day from an alcohol-related illness, the many more people in our hospitals every day suffering from alcohol-related illnesses, communities plagued with anti-social behaviour and significant child welfare and protection issues, among many other alcohol-related problems. The action group said the figures show the urgent need

for alcohol-harm reduction measures currently being considered by Government, particularly key measures targeting the pricing, marketing and availability of alcohol in Ireland, 'which have the potential to reduce our alcohol consumption and the serious fall-out from our excessive drinking', says a spokesperson for the group.

In another way to curb the spending on alcohol, a Consultant Child and Adolescent psychiatrist have said that taxes on off-licences should be increased. Dr Bobby Smyth, a board member of Alcohol Action Ireland, said that per capital, alcohol consumption is about 50% above what are considered healthy levels.

He said: “It would be great if the Department of Finance could come up with some mechanism for extracting more tax revenue from the off-trade sector.

“Despite the fact that drink costs €3.7bn in alcohol-related harm, we only take €2bn in tax from drinkers, so it does seem odd that as a society we seem unwilling to ask drinkers to pay for the costs of the consequences of their own behaviour.”

lABOuR Women is launching a campaign today calling on all parents to contact their school principals about the high cost of school uniforms.

labour Women has drafted a letter to school principals which parents can download at http://labr.ie/1fej16t asking them to allow pupils to wear generic school uniforms.

Speaking about the campaign, labour Women Chair, Sinead Ahern said, “labour Women is acutely aware of the financial burden of the “Back to School” costs which families across Ireland

have to pay each September. There are simple ways that this burden can be tackled, and one of these is by allowing students to wear generic uniforms to school.

To make life easier for parents we have drafted a letter for them, which they can download from our website and send into the principals of their children’s school asking for generic uniforms to be allowed.

Generic school uniforms can be bought for a fraction of the price in a high street shop, whereas specific specialised shops charge much higher prices. For example,

crested jumpers start at €45 for a secondary school pupil whereas a plain jumper can be bought for just €12 plus €1/€2 for an iron-on crest.

“This is a saving of over 68%. During these difficult times, such a saving can make a huge difference to a family budget. labour Women are calling on all parents to contact their school principals to allow their pupils or students to wear generic uniforms to school. ”

Though he spent a few years developing the high profile Halo film that never came to be, director Neill Blomkamp burst onto

the film scene in a big way with his stellar 2009 sci-fi pic District 9. Not only did the film include some truly killer effects work, but it was actually about something and tackled social issues like segregation and xenophobia on a sci-fi platform. It’s been four long years since District 9 opened, and fans are eagerly awaiting Blomkamp’s follow-up, the futuristic thriller elysium.

The wait is final over. Here is the offical synopsis of the movie; In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on

a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

With a production budget of $115 million, production began in July 2011. The film’s earth-

bound scenes were shot in a dump in the poor Iztapalapa district on the outskirts of Mexico City, while the scenes for elysium were shot in Vancouver and the wealthy Huixquilucan-Interlomas suburbs of Mexico City. Matt Damon shaved his head for the role of Max, and also worked out four hours a day with a personal trainer. The main role was first offered to Ninja, a South African rapper, who despite being a fan of District 9 did not take the role. The role was then offered to rapper eminem, but he wanted the film to be shot in Detroit. That was not an option for the two studios, so Blomkamp moved on to Damon as his next choice and we’re glad he did!

elysium is released on the 21st of August.

Two-time Academy Award® winner Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind, Frost/Nixon), teams once again with fellow two-time

Academy Award® nominee, writer peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Queen), on Rush, a spectacular big-screen re-creation of the merciless 1970s

rivalry between James Hunt and Niki lauda.

The epic action-drama stars Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers) as the charismatic englishman James Hunt and Brühl (Inglourious Basterds) as the disciplined Austrian perfectionist Niki lauda, whose clashes on the Grand prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives.

Set against the sexy and glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing, Rush portrays the exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed--handsome english playboy Hunt and his methodical, brilliant opponent, lauda. Taking us into their personal lives on and off the track, Rush follows the two drivers as they push themselves to the breaking point of physical and psychological endurance, where there is no shortcut to victory and no margin for error. If you make one mistake, you die.

Rush is released on the 13th of September.

MINISTeR for public expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin recently opened a fascinating new exhibition on the 1913 Dublin lock Out at The National library of Ireland. The launch of the display coincides with the centenary anniversary of the historic lockout.

The free presentation examines the background, events and aftermath of the industrial dispute and illustrates the sequence of events that began in August 1913 when workers on O’Connell Street’s trams who were seeking a pay rise from 1 shilling to 2 shillings a week downed tools and were subsequently locked out of their jobs by William Martin Murphy, the owner of the Dublin Tramway Company.

Ireland in 1913 was a country in turmoil, divided by the issue of Home Rule: self-government for the country. Against this backdrop, a violent industrial conflict took centre stage: The Dublin lockout.

More than 20,000 workers who were members of the I.T. & G.W.u. were locked out when they refused to sign a pledge to leave the union. union leader, James larkin called the strike after unrest earlier in the year during the City of Dublin Steam packet Company dispute in January and the Dublin Silk Weavers strike in March. By the end of August 1913, Dubliners witnessed an extremely volatile situation as riots occurred throughout the city, but particularly concentrated in the Ringsend, Beresford place and eden Quay areas. Hundreds of Dubliners were injured and one man died from horrific injuries after police baton charged people on what later became known as’ Bloody Sunday’. James larkin was arrested by the RIC and Dublin Metropolitan police during the riots after he appeared heavily disguised in a fake beard, top hat and frockcoat borrowed from Count Casimir Markevicz in the balcony window of the Imperial Hotel, Sackville

Street (now Clerys, O’Connell Street) to address the massive crowd of supporters who had gathered below illegally.

Many of the previously unpublished documents and photographs on display at the exhibition relate to this and include Jim larkin’s hastily scribbled advice to union colleagues, written on the eve of ‘Bloody Sunday’, urging that they “all must work together”.

Also on show are Dublin Metropolitan police records detailing Jim larkin’s arrest and newspaper cuttings from the time. During the exhibition, visitors can share the experiences of those who lived through the lockout, gaining a greater understanding of the issues facing the people of Dublin in 1913, and hear the opinions of present day commentators through short films and interactive touch screens.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Howlin said: “The people of Dublin have been afforded

every opportunity to connect once more with this formative event in the city’s history. This exhibition allows the participants to tell their stories once again.’’

David Begg, general secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade unions (ICTu), said: “The Dublin lockout exhibition gives the public an important opportunity to gain an insight into the thinking of some of the key protagonists in this epic struggle as well as the hard day-to-day experiences of ordinary workers and their families.”

The exhibition runs at No 2 Kildare Street until March 2014 and is just one of many events occurring as part of Ireland’s Decade of Commemorations to recognise, this important landmark.

ThE nEW Suzuki SWiFT SporTTHe new Swift Sport has the same DNA as its predecessor but reflects the concept of developing a refined sport compact from the new Swift, which Suzuki launched in 2010. Befitting its status as the new performance flagship of the Swift series, it reflects the pursuit of even better handling, driving performance, and environmental compatibility and an uncompromising focus on quality. It offers an incomparably rewarding experience of Suzuki’s sporty DNA.

ExteriorThe new Swift Sport’s exterior

design reflects an evolution toward an aggressive and dignified look. A ground-hugging form gives a sense of stability and tension. A big front grille evokes high performance and is flanked by big, distinctive finned fog-lamp bezels for a more aggressive, dignified character. Aero parts that are exclusive to the new Swift Sport control airflow, suppress lift, and help to give the car a low visual centre of gravity. Newly developed high-intensity discharge headlamps with a metallic-grey coating and newly developed rear combination lamps with a cylindrical design heighten the dynamism expressed by the exterior design.

InteriorSporty, exclusive design features in

the new Swift Sport’s cabin heighten driving pleasure, and a high-quality interior look and feel generates pleasure of ownership. A five-dial meter cluster combines easy legibility with an uncluttered look. Soft leather on the steering wheel allows a natural-feeling grip for easy operation and a sense of refinement. And the front seats not only offer greater support but also have exclusive fabrics and stitching that heighten excitement about the driving experience.

PerformanceSince the new Swift Sport is the

performance flagship of the Swift series, Suzuki pursued higher levels of chassis performance, thereby achieving an exceptional balance of controllability and stability. Greater toe and camber rigidity in the torsion beam, greater lateral rigidity in the torsion-beam bushings, and larger rear wheel bearings pursue stability at the rear at the high speed range. Increased spring constants for the front and rear coil springs and added rebound springs in the front struts significantly contribute to stability by realizing greater roll stiffness. An added steering-gearbox member, an added suspension-frame member, and larger front wheel bearings boost yaw response, and the handling has evolved from that of the previous Swift Sport.

The new Swift Sport’s M16A engine is based on that of the previous model. Thanks to addition of a variable intake system, optimization of the intake VVT, and increased valve lift, maximum output is up from 92kW with the previous Swift Sport to a near-class-topping 100kW* with the new model; and maximum torque is up from 148N - M to 160N - M. As a result, the driver enjoys great-feeling performance across the rev range. The engine’s high output is combined with great fuel economy; CO2 emissions are down from 165g/km to 147g/km (about 11%). plus, a revised muffler structure yields a sportier exhaust note.

*Based on Suzuki’s research on 1.6-litre naturally aspirated engines in August 2011

The new Swift Sport’s six-speed manual transmission was developed specially to take full advantage of the M16A engine’s performance. The use of six gears (up from five in the previous Swift Sport) allows sporty

driving together with fuel economy. A triple-cone synchronizer for the first and second gears permits lower shift effort. And a larger counterweight at the transmission end of the shift lever yields a sporty shift action that feels lighter and more positive.

SafetyThe new Swift Sport represents

an evolution in terms of safety. Comprehensive safety technologies mean it offers the same control and peace of mind as the new Swift, which earned a five-star rating in the european New Car Assessment programme.

For passive safety, the body is based on Suzuki’s Total effective Control Technology, which ensures that it efficiently absorbs and disperses impact forces. extensive use of high-tensile steel and the benefits of computerized structural analysis keep the body light while promoting safety. There are seven airbags (including curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag), and the pillars incorporate shock-absorbing materials that soften any contact with occupants’ heads.

Suzuki took a multifaceted approach to achieving higher levels of active safety. As a result, an eSp and an antilock braking system with electronic braking-force distribution are standard equipment.

Suzuki took a multifaceted approach to achieving higher levels of active safety. As a result, new Swift Sport has an eSp®* (electronic Stability program) to help maintain greater stability and controllability on diverse road surfaces.

*Note: eSp is a registered trademark of Daimler AG.

The most notable advance in terms of passive safety in the new Swift Sport is that all grades have seven airbags (front, side, curtain, and knee airbags) as standard equipment

playStation 4 will be released 29/11/2013

IT was the big question on everyone’s lips as the buzz grew around gamescom 2013 – and at the playStation showcase event, it fell to playStation president Andrew House to reveal the final piece of the playStation 4 puzzle, turning the promise of a late 2013 launch into a tangible date:

playStation 4 will be released on November 29 2013

That alone was almost enough to take the roof off the conference centre in Cologne, Germany – and the build-up to that news had been just as exciting, with a raft of announcements of new games and services coming to pS4, playStation 3 and playStation Vita, as well as mouth-watering price drops for pS3 and pS Vita.

Why pS3 is still the most creative place to play:

Gran Turismo 6 was first off the starting grid for pS3, with SCee president Jim Ryan announcing how the real racing simulator is set to take on an extra dimension of reality with Vision Gran Turismo, featuring concept cars from the world’s biggest auto manufacturers. If that wasn’t enough, there was the announcement of a Hollywood movie inspired by the GT series, as well as a release date for the game: 6 December 2013.

littleBigplanet Hub revealed a brand new, free-to-play way to create and share your own worlds of adventure on pS3, with all of the tools, costumes and games that gamers everywhere have come to love, all in one place.

playStation Vita – in a universe all of its own:

Indie gaming on pS Vita had the crowd switching from stunned awe to rapturous applause, with the darkly twisted yet touchingly emotive world of Murasaki Baby receiving a rapturous reception. There was much excitement too around the announcement of BigFest, the game that puts real-world bands and musicians centre stage as players strive to become the world’s best music promoter and put on their own festival.

Big name games also received a huge response: popular loot-and-shoot

adventure Borderlands 2 is set to come to pS Vita, while Twitter almost went into meltdown at news that a fully featured Football Manager is coming soon to the portable system.

pS Vita showed why it’s the best value place to play with the announcement of some all-new Mega pack bundles, featuring a host of favourite games from the world of sport and much loved Disney adventures. And that wasn’t all – there was news of a price drop, bringing the portable system down to €199 (RRp*) throughout europe

New pS4 games for next-generation gamers:

pS4 system architect Mark Cerny took to the stage to herald what he called “a renaissance in gaming” and to pay tribute to the passions of the development teams that have made playStation dreams a reality, before handing over to Shahid Ahmed to tell us all why playStation loves indie developers:

New independent titles were announced, including Rogue legacy, Guns of Icarus Online and Wasteland Kings, as well as Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, coming exclusively to pS4 and pS Vita. “We’re proud to work with the most creative developers in the world” Shahid said, heralding a new era for dev teams to create what they want, release their games when they want, and on whichever platform they choose.

The audience was then treated to the news that 14 developers from SCe Worldwide Studios family are currently making games for pS4, with WWS president Michael Denny teasing us with talk that Naughty Dog, Media Molecule and Santa Monica Studios are included in that number. This was followed by a whole host of fresh announcements for pS4, including:

everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, a story that begins at the end of the world with stark, moody graphics from developer The Chinese Room. Rime gave a change of pace with its storybook look and feel wrapped around an adventure of discovery, while HellDIVeRS switched the pace again with squads of elite soldiers taking on alien invaders to planet

earth. ReSOGuN lit up the stage with neon blasts of shoot ‘em up colour, while an extra-special cheer was reserved for Shadow of the Beast, an all-time favourite game re-imagined for pS4 with sharper blades and even bigger monsters to tackle. Minecraft is also on its way to pS4, giving all the budding builders out there a chance to flex their creativity.

Remote play between pS4 and pS Vita systems was showcased with some swashbuckling action from Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Beginning on board a pirate vessel, the action started on pS4 with blasts of cannon fire, before seamlessly transferring to the pS Vita and continuing the same game on the move as the pirate crew made for dry land. The playRoom will come pre-installed on every pS4 system, giving gamers the chance to bring robotic friends to life in their living room.

As the global head of playStation Andrew House wrapped up the showcase with the news of the 29 November 2013 european release date, he told the crowd “We set out to build the most powerful gaming platform with a focus on you, the gamer... and to make great gaming worlds more accessible than ever before”. Tonight, those worlds came another step closer.

November just can’t come quickly enough.

Discover how gamescom 2013 exploded into life with a stellar line-up of new pS4, pS3 and pS Vita titles – and an all-important date for your diary

Kings of leon - Mechanical Bullplenty of fans and haters alike have been speculating as to whether or not this day would ever come, but it has: Kings of leon have confirmed some details of their sixth record, Mechanical Bull. even after a cancelled tour and some speculation as to their continuing on as a band, the Followill gentlemen recorded the record with their longtime producer Angelo petraglia in Nashville, and they’ll hopefully tease some tracks from it on their upcoming summer tour. Bassist Jared Followill told NMe we’re in for a youthful-sounding album, so keep an ear to the ground.

Mechanical Bull is out September 20th.

Nine Inch Nails - Hesitation MarksHesitation Marks is the upcoming eighth studio album by American industrial rock act Nine Inch Nails. It will be their first album since 2008’s The Slip, and first release on Columbia Records, making this their first album released on a major label since 2007’s Year Zero. The album title is derived from hesitation wounds, wounds produced by testing a bladed weapon before attempting suicide or self-harming. Good to see that winning an Oscar hasn’t changed Trent Reznor. On August 12, 2013, Amazon uK officially made the second track, “Copy of A”, available for free to download.

Hesitation Marks is out September 3rd.

placebo - loud like loveloud like love is the seventh studio album by British alternative rock band placebo. The album was recorded in london’s RAK Studios, where placebo have also recorded their fifth studio album, Meds. production duties, as well as mixing, were handled by Adam Noble. The album’s first single, “Too Many Friends”, was released on 8 July 2013 and if this is anything to go by then this is going to be another cracking album by this consistent band. The album will be released as a box set, a digipack with DVD,CD and 12”.

SupeRSTAR DJ Fatboy Slim has said that Irish fans have helped him overcome his mortal terror of performing while sober. Which is some what ironic in a country that is famed for its ‘fondness for the auld drink’

The multi award winning global dj said “After I gave up drinking I found it absolutely petrifying to DJ. I had never tried it before. until then all the nerves had been banished by alcohol.”

He worried he would not be able to continue and that it was going to be the end of his career, until he was asked to perform at Dublin’s Marlay park, months after leaving rehab in 2009.

Fatboy Slim real name Norman Cook went on to say “That was the first sober gig I did where the response of the crowd and the excitement the music was generating got me over my fear.” Its hard to think of a multi-million album selling DJ whose hits include ‘The Rockafeller Skank’ and ‘praise You’ suffering from such nerves and stage fright. He continued “I was petrified and the warmth of the Dublin audience got me over all of that.”

You can catch Cook play soon as he will be headlining a slot at the electric picnic festival at Stradbally, laois at the end of the month.

FOuR Irish HMV branches, three of which are located in Dublin, are set to reopen by the first week of September.

The stores to reopen are at Henry Street, liffey Valley and Dundrum Shopping Centre in Dublin, as well as the branch at Crescent Shopping Centre in limerick. The prohibitive rental prices surrounding HMV’s flagship Irish branch on Grafton Street are thought to be too excessive to entertain reopening at this point.

120 new jobs have been filled, with

approximately 70 of those going to original HMV employees who lost their jobs when the high street chain went into administration in January.

There are a further 12 former HMV branches throughout Ireland which remain closed and there is no word as of yet as to whether or not, or to what timeline, further branches will be reopened.
