And, like COVID-19, Cystic Fibrosis has no cure or vaccine. As CFA has learned to navigate the murky waters of operating during a global pandemic, we face the reality that the needs of the CF community are higher than ever. We have members who had to give up jobs to stay home and stay safe. We have some who have upped their daily physiotherapy in order to keep their lungs strong and healthy. Our members still need their regular medications. They still need to visit their physicians to monitor their lung functions and to stay healthy. Cystic Fibrosis does not take a break, and neither can we. Our traditional fundraising streams are a little drier than a “normal” year, but our needs are still real, as are life and death. So, we ask you, our faithful supporters, to examine whether you can support us monetarily during these uncertain times. We are aware that these times have been tough for many of you as well. If you are in a position where you have been less economically affected by COVID-19, please give, and make an impact in the lives of our friends living with Cystic Fibrosis. DIRECTOR’S MESSAGEGreetings to all our members, friends and neighbors,

To say that the past few months have been difficult would be an

understatement. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) has caused tremendous challenges for North Dakota along with the entire world. Like everyone, CFA has experienced a myriad of obstacles. Due to mandated closures, our entire gaming operations were shut down for over a month, our gaming staff went from employed to unemployment overnight, and our other funding mechanisms, both current and future have temporarily ceased. The remaining “office” staff, did their best to social distance, mostly working from home, and alternating each day of the week to come into the office, in order to maintain our day to day functions, and respond to the needs of our members. During this time, we have had to get creative in our efforts for planning future events and keeping in touch with our members.

As we were asked to stay at home as much as possible, the world was forced to live a virtual life, utilizing virtual means to complete daily tasks. Our kids went to online classes, our needs were fulfilled by shopping online and picking items up, we participated in virtual doctors’ visits, restaurants developed curbside and delivery options, the media personnel delivered broadcasts from their living rooms, and the list goes on and on.

At CFA, our focus was to continue business as usual to every degree possible. In order to do so, we upped our online presence. We provided information via Facebook and twitter, to educate people on social distancing. Many of our members also shared personal stories, as living with CF, they have had to learn how to social distance throughout their lives.

In addition to upping our online presence, we had to determine how, as a nonprofit organization, we could continue to host the same events that have always been a significant piece of our fund-raising income. This new “virtual” world we are living in became our answer. Our first attempt was participating in a “Giving Tuesday Now”

program, which is like our Giving Hearts Day annually held in February. The concept was that many non-profits were going to be in the same boat, with diminished funding. Giving Tuesday Now was designed for anyone willing to participate, who could provide a monetary gift to their preferred non-profits, including CFA.

As mentioned, CFA had to cancel some of our actual events, including the CFA Fargo Golf Tournament, however we are in the process of re-inventing a number of our upcoming events such as the Holiday Homes of Hope held in Fargo and Turkey Trot held in Bismarck. Our plan is still to host these events (responsibly and with recommended guidelines in place of course), but there will also be either a virtual option or online additions made to these events, to accommodate those who feel more comfortable not attending events in person, but who still want to support CFA. As an organization who supports individuals with compromised health, it only makes sense to provide alternative options. Some of the details for upcoming events will be rolled out later in this newsletter and other details will be shared as we continue to finalize them. Rest assured, we will keep you informed.

We ask for your help. By participating in CFA sponsored events,

your attendance, physical or online, or by sponsoring an event, helps us to

continue living our mission.

Our charitable gaming is back up and running, and as the rest of our community slowly gets back to normal, we understand that “normal” is very different than it was two short months ago. Know the mission of CFA remains unchanged. We will continue to assist people to #BreatheEasier physically, emotionally, and financially through any means, we can.

HOLIDAY HOMES OF HOPE UPDATE

There seems to be a theme—worldwide—of events either being canceled or having to change their face during this crisis. We are ALL learning to be more flexible!

With flexibility and safety in mind, we have struggled with how to retain a successful and fun event like Holiday Homes of Hope, while keeping our friends and neighbors safe.

The plan for the 2020 Holiday Homes of Hope is to produce a very fun, very informative virtual Holiday Homes of Hope tour—which will feature the fantastic interior designers that you have grown to love, as well as featuring homes and talent from all over North Dakota! Plans are still very much in flux, but we also hope to keep the Evening of Hope Holiday Cocktail Fundraiser and present it as a hybrid event—with some in-person and some virtual involvement.

We cannot wait to celebrate our eleventh year of Holiday Homes of Hope with you, and, while it will be different from past years, our hope is that it will be just as enjoyable and will raise much-needed funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Association of North Dakota!

To stay current on this event or become a sponsor, please email Pam at [email protected].

CHARITABLE DONATIONSWe extend our sincere gratitude to our friends for their recent gifts. Each gift received directly contributes to the programs and services that are offered to CFA members. Every gift, no matter its size, makes a difference!

In an abundance of caution, we made the difficult decision to not hold the Fargo/Moorhead Golf Tournament this year. The COVID-19 situation makes it incredibly difficult to plan events, but we are playing things safe. While we will not have a tournament on the east side of the state, we do hope that some will consider coming out to the Bismarck Tournament at Apple Creek Country Club on August 17th.

TENTH ANNUAL WALK/RUN IN MEMORY OF SONIA

The tenth (and final) Walk/Run in Memory of Sonia Balliet-Heidenreich is scheduled for Saturday, September 5, at Oak Grove Park in Fargo. The walk/run will kick off at 10 am and will be followed by a lunch (details on lunch to be determined, pending current COVID-19 status.)

The Balliet family has some lofty fundraising goals for this tenth and final event. Over the course of this event, $85,000 has been raised in memory of Sonia in hopes that people living with cystic fibrosis can #BreatheEasier. The Balliet family is hoping to raise $15,000 at this walk to meet the $100,000 mark.

If you have not joined us for this event before, this would be a great chance to see, first-hand, the love and connection CF families have for each other. The “Sonia Walk” is great fun for people of all ages and athletic ability. It is a wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning to celebrate a life well-lived and to support families that are living with the very harsh realities of Cystic Fibrosis.

OUR NEW REALITYHandwashing, disinfecting, sanitizing, staying home, avoiding crowds and staying six feet apart from others is the new reality of the world we live in; however, all of this is just another day for someone living with cystic fibrosis.

If you are in a position where you have been less economically affected by COVID-19, please give, and make an impact in thelives of our friends living with Cystic Fibrosis.
