College scoops national award for X Factor drive

A promotional drive which secured unprecedented UK and international media coverage for a Bishop Auckland College music course has secured a national industry award.In January the college launched an evening class designed to prepare budding

performers for auditions such as ITV hit show the X Factor. The aim was to use popular culture as a hook to attract young, unemployed people to enrol at the college for the first time.Students who enrolled on the 17-week programme, which ended just in time for the

2013 auditions for the show, received technical tuition in singing and performing and coaching on how to project themselves confidently.Being the first course of its kind to directly link the NCFE Level 1 Certificate in Music to TV talent shows, news spread quickly with coverage across most national newspapers and many regional radio stations across the UK.This included a live broadcast from the college’s main campus on ITV’s Daybreak programme, and North East regional television, radio and press coverage.International media interest included the Hollywood Reporter in the US, Australian press and titles across Europe, which led to enquiries about the course from as far afield as Malta. The college has since received a Silver Award in the PR campaign category at the College Marketing Network’s FE First Awards.Kevin Burns, Head of Marketing and Schools Liaison, said, “We were astonished by the level of media interest in this course, which helped us successfully recruit a group of students, some of whom have since progressed on to higher level full time courses.”

Staff at Sainsbury’s Bishop Auckland are getting into the festive spirit by helping local organisations raise money.On Saturday 30th November, Stray Aid visited the store and managed to raise a fantastic £442, as well as collecting tins of pet food.The charity also managed to re-home three dogs as a direct result of them being in store.The supermarket held a

successful collection for the Teesdale Lions on 7th December, when they visited the store with Santa and raised £451.77. A ‘sing while you shop’ carolling event took place on Friday 13th and will be held again on Monday 16th December, with schools from Bishop Auckland performing in slots throughout the day. Some of the store’s colleagues were also singing on

Friday to raise money for their charity of the year, Woodhouse Close Church Community Centre.On December 19th Colleagues will be helping to serve the Christmas lunch at the Community Centre. The store’s charity of the year will also be bag packing on Saturday 21st, while The Northern Citrines Jazz Band from Shildon will be back packing on Sunday 22nd.

Level 3 and Higher National Diploma Performing Arts students from Bishop Auckland College have recently had huge success with the production of their pantomime, Cinderella. The show ran from Monday 3rd to Friday 6th December at the College and the pupils hosted local primary schools from Bishop Auckland and the surrounding areas, as well as care homes from as far as Middleton-St-George.The panto went down a storm, with Cinders and her ugly sisters entertain-ing the crowds day in and day out. The run of shows, which totalled eleven across the five days, was a great insight for the

students into the Enter-tainment industry and the demands of such a career. Interim Learning Area Manager Katy Graham said, “I am so proud of our students and staff, they have worked extremely hard and given up much of their own time and days off to ensure the show was a huge success, and they successfully secured a booking for the Tesco Extra store on Sunday for their staff children’s Christmas party, something which will hopefully be an annual occurrence.” Anyone interested in studying Performing Arts at the College should contact Katy Graham on 01388 443070 or email start@bacoll.ac.uk.

Pupils at a Bishop Auckland school have learnt about the effects that cyber bullying can have on others, directly from Durham’s Police and Crime Commis-sioner (PCC).As part of national anti-bul-lying week, PCC Ron Hogg launched his campaign against cyber bullying at Etherley Lane Primary School on 20th November, following an invite by a school governor. The campaign focuses on raising awareness amongst young people about the risks and dangers of cyber bullying and Mr Hogg has tasked Durham Constabulary to

create an educational programme to deliver in primary schools.Year 5 and 6 pupils were involved in interactive workshops, followed by a school assembly led by Mr Hogg.Mr Hogg said, “I want to discourage cyber bullying, help people recognise it and know what to do about it. This was a really productive visit to the Etherley Lane Primary School. The young people asked me interesting questions during assembly and were really engaging.“I have asked Year 5 and 6 pupils to design a logo as a competition for the launch

of my campaign against cyber bullying. I am looking forward to judging the entries.”Head teacher Karen Bennett said, “Through a range of activities we are empowering our pupils to take a lead on creating a future without bullying, using technology to promote positive communication.”Following his visit, Mr Hogg posted the following message on Twitter: “Excellent morning at Etherley Lane Primary School tackling bullying and cyber bullying. What a fabulous school – well done.”

Teachers from two of the town’s secondary school have raised funds for charity by taking part in the national Movember campaign, which raises funds and awareness for men’s health.Nine teachers and volunteers at King James I Academy took part in the initiative to grow a moustache, led by P.E teacher Mr Bushby, and thanks to support from staff and students raised almost £700 for charity.Mr Bushby said, “As a PE Department, we believe it is really important to encourage our young people to be aware of their health as well as their fitness. is working hard to change that. It is an excellent campaign, which really draws attention to the issue of men’s health and this was a fantastic opportunity for us to raise awareness at King James.“Our moustaches caused quite a stir in school; we have all endured countless uncomfortable days during the growing stages and a month of good-humoured ridicule from our students, but it has all been worth it. We have raised a consider-able amount of money for a very worthy cause.”Ten members of staff at Bishop Barrington School also took part in the challenge. Pupils were made aware of the aims of Movember through the school’s regular ‘Thought of the Week’ programme, delivered by

form tutors. In addition to raising awareness of male health issues, staff and pupils raised funds by purchasing raffle tickets. Each raffle ticket had a space to allow staff and pupils to vote for which teacher had the best moustache.Science teacher Marc Stuart, who also co-ordi-nates the school’s House competitions said, “We’ve had a good laugh, most of the time, hearing staff and pupils commenting on our facial hair growing efforts. We have all been canvassing for votes that not only count for us but the school Houses we represent. “It is also good to know that some of the older pupils in particular are now talking about the need to check for signs of testicular cancer.”

Meet Santa in his Grotto

Children can meet Santa in his Grotto at Bishop Auckland Town Hall on Saturday 21st December, between 10am and 12

noon.The grotto is also open most days for children to post their letters to Santa in his special post box.

Early morning raids by Durham Constabulary have resulted in 18 people being arrested for offences relating to the unlawful distribution of controlled drugs, and a further two people being arrested for other offences.Around 165 uniformed officers and a range of support staff were involved in the operation, which took place on Wednesday 4th December and saw 13 men and 7 women arrested in Bishop Auckland, Shildon and Newton Aycliffe. Police swooped on a number of properties during the 6am operation, including three in Bishop Auckland.The strikes were carried out as part of a continuing operation named ‘Sledge-hammer’; Durham Con-stabulary’s unrelenting campaign against organised crime in County Durham and Darlington.The operation has taken five months to prepare,

with police swooping on 15 properties in total. The Bishop properties targeted were homes in St John’s Walk, West Lane, and Elm Terrace, as well as Kirkstall Walk, in St Helen Auckland.Those arrested were aged between 25 and 54, with the majority detained on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of class A controlled drugs.Information regarding illegal activity in these locations was provided to police by members of the public.Chief Inspector Dave Turner commented, “Today’s operation has been an overwhelming success. We will not tolerate criminal activity of this kind in our force area. We will continue to dismantle, disrupt and destroy these networks.”Anyone with information about drug dealing in their area can call police on 101, and pass on what they know anonymously.

Children at a Bishop Auckland nursery are to get a new outdoor play area thanks to public votes in a national competition run by Lloyds Bank.More than 1,000 people voted for Bishop Auckland College Nursery’s bid for the Lloyds Bank Community Fund 2013, giving the nursery second place with 26% of the local public vote.The fund has awarded grants to 1,300 local good causes in villages, towns and cities across England and Wales. Each community received

four awards, with two of £3,000 and two of £300. More than 2.3m votes were cast nationally.The nursery was short listed for the competition with a bid highlighting efforts by staff to promote a healthy lifestyle for the children and encouraging physical activity as part of their development. The award of £3,000 will fund a large climbing frame with protected flooring for the nursery garden.Alice Hunter, Senior Early Years Practitioner at the nursery, co-ordinated the bid. She said, “The nursery

is delighted to have come second in the Lloyds Bank Community Fund vote. We are looking forward to purchasing a climbing frame for our pre-school children, which will offer access to more physical and active play, and give them great pleasure. “The amount of votes we received was fantastic and I want to thank everyone who voted for us.” The nursery has 30 staff and places for up to 160 children aged from three months to pre-school, and serves staff, students and the general public.

Bishop Auckland Civic Society’s Annual Town Quiz, held at Bishop Auckland Town Hall on Wednesday 4th December, raised a total of £850 for locally based 'Innovations’, who support people to achieve their goals and dreams.The winning team, Blockie's Boys, kindly donated their

Durham County Council recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of its link to the German county of Wesel and hosted a special visit from its partner area during the Lumiere festival. The Council leaders had agreed that during official visits there would be no exchange of civic gifts, but rather a donation would be made to a chosen local charity.As Cllr Pauline Charlton, the chairman of Durham

County Council, had nominated the Butterwick Hospice as one of her chosen charities for 2013/14, Dr Ansgar Mueller, the visiting Chairman of Kreis Wesel, was delighted to donate 500 Euros to the hospice during his visit to the county. The delegates from Durham’s partner region were especially interested in the charity, as they are in the planning stages of developing a similar hospice facility within their

county. Durham County Council continues to organise intensive language courses for hundreds of children who travel to Germany each year and has arranged for many local groups, asso-ciations, music ensembles and sports teams to visit and exchange with German groups. Plans are also in hand to continue to develop the link further and involve ap-prentices in the exchange programme.

On Monday 9th December, Bishop Barrington School hosted a Christmas lunch for senior citizens from Woodhouse Community Centre as part of an initia-tivev by Durham Age UK. A Christmas Carol concert

took place at the event with St. Anne's Primary School, and the older people said they had a wonderful time. A spokesperson for the school commented, “It was wonderful to see old and young enjoying themselves

together and an opportunity for older people to socialise outside of the house. “Staff and students were praised by the senior citizens for the tasty food, presentation and the waitress service.”

There are several events to keep you entertained taking place at Bishop Auckland Town Hall throughout Christmas and the New Year.On Thursday 19th December the Children’s Theatre will perform ‘Once Upon a Time...in the North’.This new play for family audiences is based on the myths and legends of the northern region. The production was devised and created by the actors, writers and artists of NTC, under the guidance of children’s novelist and playwright Ann Coburn, to create some scary, funny, silly and thrilling yarns.The show starts at 7pm with tickets costing £8 for adults and £6 for conces-sions.Give yourself a Christmas treat with the North-East based Soundpower Orchestra on Friday 20th December from 7.30pm.The professional, contem-porary, 35 piece ensemble, features the best of local musicians and singers. There will be seasonal festive favourites, sing-a-long carols and Evergreens from the Christmas pop charts, all played live by this dynamic musical force that is the Soundpower

Filled with venom, she curses the Princess to death on her 16th birthday. Will Prince Reliant and the members of S.N.I.F.F. (Shildon National Institute of Flower Fairies) overcome Carabosse’s evil spell?The show will be staged on Thursday 9th and Friday 10th January at 7pm, and on Saturday 11th an January at 2.30pm and 7pm. St Mary’s U10 Aces had a 6-1 win and their first league win of the season, with a fantastic perfor-mance against Trimdon. Goal scorers were Ryan Byrne (3), Cameron Bass (2) and one from Blake Winter.The U10 Kings also had a very good 1-0 win over Newton Aycliffe Youth, with Sonny Richardson scoring and Piotr Banda man-of-the-match.The U11s kept up their great run of wins with a 2-0 victory away at Middleton Rangers, with goals from Corbyn Mitchell and Dylan Kestle.The U12 Aces had a good 1-1 draw away at Nunthorpe with Liam Robson scoring and Ben Morton man-of-the-match.The U12 Kings put up a good performance against Spraire Lads but lost 4-2, with goals from Charlie Ellison and Jai Aldus.The U13s were involved in a very close game against Nunthorpe, losing out 3-2 with goals from Carl Stout and Matty Stokoe.The U14s lost also in a close game against Redcar with a 3-1 result and with Dominic Curl scoring.The U15 Kings had a great first half, going in at half-time 2-1 up against

Marton FC Royals, but lost 5-2 playing against the wind in the second half with Marton taking full advantage. Kieran Kirkby had a great game in goal for St. Mary’s, filling in for James Hauxwell.The U16s were also involved in a very close game away at Tibs, losing 3-2 with goals from Callum Macleod and Kieran Maddison.The U12 Aces had a great away win at Seaton Carew with a hat-trick from Aaron Willoughby ending in a 3-0 win and Wiseem Azouzi man-of-the-match.The U10 Kings had a good 2-0 home win in the cup against Newton Aycliffe Youth, with goals from Kyle Blacklock and Joseph Foster.The U11s also had a good weekend in the League Cup, with a 6-2 away win at Grangetown. Goals came from Jack Purdham (2), Regan Nixon, Thomas Hindmarch, Jack Wood and Curtis Mitchell.The U12 Kings came up against a good Nunthorpe team from Div. 1 and put up a great fight to only lose 2-0.The U13s had a 7-0 win over Northallerton with goals from Callum Thomson (2), Adam Hall (2), Byron

Welford, Cameron Galloway and Mark Pavin.The U14s lost against a good Boro Rangers side with Jack Blacklock scoring. The U15 Aces played Billingham Rangers in an exciting Quarter Final match. The game was a 4-4 draw going into extra time, but the Aces came out on top 8-5 to go into the Challenge Cup Semi-Final.Goals came from Brett Davidson (3), Steven Taylor (2), Luke Bailey, Zac Barrigan and Thomas Wilkinson.The U16s also had a great 8-1 win over Seaton Carew with goals from Jack Pollard (3), Adam Gillies, Callum Macleod, Kieran Maddison and Ben Bayles (2).The U15 Angels had a very exciting game against champions Cestria in the semi-final of the League Cup, with goals from Kimberley Dodds (2) and Dani Stephenson, but the game went into extra time at 3-3. The match was decided on penalties and St. Mary’s scored four goals from Brodie Grayson, Shannon Reed, Kimberley Dodds and Charlie-Jo Glen, but unbelievably, Cestria went and scored all five to go through to the final.

Paul Grange from Bishop Auckland recently placed second in his class overall at the final of the British Bike Trials championship.Paul has had a great season, having been to rounds as

far south as Surrey and as far north as Fort William in Scotland. He finished 4th in one round, 2nd in four rounds and 1st in one round, finishing in 2nd place overall.
