The SoloiST:A lost Dream, an Unlikely Friendship,

& the Redemptive Power of Musicby Steve Lopez

(Penguin Books, 2008)

Lopez, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times, first encounters nathaniel Ayers playing Beethoven on a

battered two-string violin, standing on a busy downtown street corner. Over the next few days, he discovers that nathaniel was once a promising music student at Juilliard — that is, until he was overcome by schizophrenia. Over a period of many months, enlisting the help of doctors, mental health professionals, and professional musicians, Lopez attempts to help Nathaniel move out of Skid row, regain his dignity, develop his musical talent, and free himself of the demons induced by schizophre-nia. With elegant prose and great honesty, Lopez tells an inspiring story of heartbreak and hope.

OWenS VALLey reSiDenTS have been “making history” since humans first appeared here, says historian and author Jane Wehrey, who will explore how ordinary people have helped create extraordinary pasts in Lone Pine, Manzanar, and other eastern Sierra communities. A slide show will accompany the presentations hosted by the Friends of the Lone pine Library at the Beverly and Jim rogers Museum of Film history. Ms. Wehrey has written two books about the area and will be available to sign both. Wehrey is an Owens Valley native and current resident of independence. her family’s history in the valley dates to 1918, when her maternal grandparents came to the Man-zanar fruit-growing community to operate the general store. With degrees from Occidental College and CalState Fullerton, Wehrey has worked extensively as an editor and interviewer in the oral history field at CSUF. She has also worked extensively for the national park Service at Manzanar. For more information, call the Friends at 760-876-4100.
