Bishop Ireton Men’s Lacrosse SCOOP * Volume 6 * September 30, 2011 * Scoop: Notes from Coach Reed Hello Lacrosse families! I'm excited to start our year off and see some new faces. I've been at Bishop Ireton for almost a year now, have enjoyed my time and hope to keep it going. During the summer, our student athletes played on several travel teams. I was fortunate enough to coach a few of them. We had over 16 BI laxers playing for Alexandria Travel. I was pleased with the progress they made. I think we are entering this season with many positives. During our 2012 BI Men’s Lacrosse Organizational meeting in September, we focused a lot on "cuts". Unfortunately, they are necessary as interest in BI Lax grows. I will not cut players who work their butts off. Our coaches can turn any athlete with a positive attitude and a good work ethic into a lacrosse player. This year we are focusing on the 3 F's - Faith, Fight, and Fortitude. Faith, believe in the system, your team, your coaches. Fight, never give up, until the buzzer sounds. Fortitude, sometimes things don't go our way and it might be a few bad games. Keep a positive mental attitude, because at the end of the day it's only a game. The coaching staff and I want Bishop Ireton Men’s Lacrosse to be a great experience for you and your sons. I know with hard work and lots of effort, we will have a great team. Every player has five months till the season starts, more than enough time to prepare. Everyone can make the team. Your son might just be the piece to the puzzle we need. If you are not the biggest, be the fastest, or strongest or smartest. There's something for everyone in BI Men’s Lax. Find your spot! Notes from Coach Blaine We currently have 77 student athletes in the Men’s Lacrosse program. Hello Lacrosse families!

Unfortunately, they

are necessary as interest in BI Lax grows.

Notes from Coach Blaine

We currently have 77 student athletes in the Men’s Lacrosse program. Many attended camps and participated in leagues over the summer, including 15 BI laxers who participated in the Lynchburg Team Camp in June. Senior attackman, Max Becker, served as a Senate page over the summer. During June

and July we held open fields on Fannon Field every Wednesday evening, giving BI Lax alumni, current BI and local high school players a chance to compete against one another. Many of our laxers are participating in Football, Soccer and Cross Country this fall. The football win over O’Connell at home was a great start to the school year! The football Cardinals are 5-0! We need to keep that winning attitude throughout our winter sports programs and into our spring season.

In June the 2011 BI Men’s Lacrosse program finished the academic year with a 3.279688 GPA. We missed our goal of 3.3, but not by much. Keep working on academics! The following student athletes had a 4.0 or higher last semester: Steven Gottlieb, Liam McCormack, Owen McHugh, Thomas Owen, Albert Schibani and Phillip Thomas. Congratulations gentlemen! Work to your potential. Manage your time. If in doubt about your priorities, they are Academics and Lacrosse. Get ahead on your school projects and volunteer hours.

All BI glove and Spirit Pack order forms and CHECKS must be mailed to Coach Reed at Bishop Ireton BEFORE the 5 Oct 11 order date. Checks should be made out to BIHS, with “BI Men’s Lax” on the memo line. This is the ONLY opportunity to buy BI gloves this season. It is the first of two chances to buy the BI Spirit Pack.

Men’s Lacrosse conditioning begins on Tuesday, October 11, 2011. Coaches will supervise lifting, conditioning and stick skills twice a week. Captains will hold a third practice each week. The conditioning program is ONLY for those laxers NOT involved in a fall sport. “A journey of 1000 miles begins with the first step.“ Get Started. Step off. Go CARDINALS!

Kiss: Why We Love BI!

Bishop Ireton has the highest SAT scores in the Dioceses of Arlington. 99% of our students matriculate to colleges of their choice. BI fields 48 teams in which 75% of our student body participates in one or more sports. The goal of our community of committed, caring faculty and staff is to provide an atmosphere encouraging each student to achieve their greatest spiritual, academic and social potential.

Seniors Helena Barber and Jacob Ramey have been named 2012 National Merit Scholarship

Semifinalists. National semifinalists represent less than one percent of all US high school seniors.

Seniors Catherine Addington, Carlos Daing, Lacrosse midfielder Matthew Dubow and Christine Snyder have been named Commended Scholars in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.

of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams. The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) provides willing and academically

prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.9 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams.

least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. These students are Michael Andersen, James Bieron, Daniel Burns, Joanna Faletti, Neil Heitbrink, Jacqueline McCabe, Liam O’Connor, James Oliva, and Allison Wulf.

Thirty-one students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with scores of 3 or higher. The AP Scholars are Catherine Addington, Samantha Bass, Noah Brooksher, Cierra Coan, Aida-Stephanie Dohou, Richard Drummond, Anton Ekman, Elaine Ferguson, Cyrelle Elize Fermin, Samuel Ferrara, Paloma Ferreira, Katherine Fogarty, James Fonda, Sarah Fyffe, Brittany Harris, Liam Heaney, Stephanie Heredia, Allison Laclede, Robert LaRose, Marin Nolan, Jacob Ramey, Michael Robertson, Geraldine Salazar, Matthew Smith, Christine Snyder, Allison Swiger, Jessenia Villanueva, Stephen Washington, Nicole Winfree, and Reid Yager.

Of this year’s award recipients at Bishop Ireton High School, fourteen are sophomores or juniors. These students have at least one more year in which to complete college-level work and possibly earn a higher-level AP Scholar Award.
