The Solar Dogs recently teamed up withShell Lumber for an evening of fun thatfeatured two live bands, local artists, foodtrucks and more for its fourth annual Howlin the Wood.

The idea for this annual event startedwith a chance meeting between SolarDogs’ Bill Kunz, a retired Pan Americanpilot, and Paul Naron, owner of ShellLumber at Coconut Grove Sailing Clubfive years ago. Once Naron offered the sitefor the event, band members then lookedfor ways to involve the Coconut Grovecommunity and called on artists and foodvendors to participate.

From the start it was a great success andhas become an event that everyone looksforward to attending every year. Kunzexpressed his appreciation to Shell Lumberfor generously donating the site and itspresident, Jesus Guzman, who helpedwith the logistics for this year’s event.

Wanting to find a way to give back againthis year, Kunz approached Shake-A-Legs’Kathleen Harris to orchestrate a way forShake-A-Leg to not only raise moneythrough the sale of $500 worth of Howl inthe Wood tickets but also provide space atthe event for Shake-A-Leg to solicit dona-tions and promote its many programs.

It was a win-win for all. Guests not onlyenjoyed the music of Coconut Grove’sown Solar Dogs but a great opening act byAvocado Estate from the UM School ofMusic. Kunz and his band have plans toprovide a free concert in the fall at Shake-A-Leg as well.

On the art scene, the WynwoodExhibition Center held an exhibition the

evening of Apr. 13 where NancyMartini and other environmental-ly conscious artists explored theconnection between nature andurban life as a way to inspire theconcept of growing food wherevera pocket of nutrient rich soil canbe found in our overbuilt andstressed communities.

Each sculpture used an upcy-cled item to symbolize everydayurban life and human impact onthe environment and brown paperto mimic brown grocery bags, representing our relationship withstore purchased food as well as tounite man, objects and nature.Viewing the art really makes oneconscious of how much waste weproduce that can be repurposed.

On the club scene, the GFWCCoco Plum Woman’s Club con-ducted its annual bridge/card partyon Mar. 20. A crowd of 75 attend-ed the affair all of whom enjoyedthe food for the luncheon preparedby the members. The affair raised$ 2,000, which was donated toFeeding Florida Food Bank.

When local wine lover Sunny Fraser want-ed to make fine wines available for samplingto more people, she literally had to invent herown way to do it. The result was a single-serving wine package called “The Vini” thatis spreading across South Florida.

Developed with her partner DavidGordon, The Vini is a sleek glass tube withan 187ml serving equivalent to a quarter of aregular sized bottle of wine. It currently isavailable with a California Napa wine basedon Zinfandel and a California Sonoma winebased on Chardonnay. But getting there was-n’t easy.

“The most difficult obstacle of this projectwas the fabrication of our custom 187mlglass vial,” Fraser said. “It seems so simple, because most people view it as a glass tubewith a screw cap. However, the length of thedesign and the neck threads had never beencontemplated on this type of glass before, sothere has been a lot of blood, sweat andtears.”

Fraser, blond haired and green-eyed, wasborn in the Dominican Republic, grew up ina small-town in the Midwest, then moved toSouth Florida the latter part of her highschool years, attending Miami PalmettoHigh, the University of Florida and Barry

University. She worked at Gibraltar Bankand Trust before working at Sunbox ElevenWinery.

Gordon grew up in Pinecrest, went toRansom-Everglades and now lives inPalmetto Bay. Since their bottling factory isin Sonoma, CA they spend part of their timethere as well.

The Vini currently is available at Joe’sStone Crab Take Away, Eden RocRenaissance, South Beach Marriott, PGA

National Resort & Spa, Joanna’sMarketplace and other retailers, restaurantsand hotels. It also can be purchased throughtheir website.

Fraser said that the packaging gets a goodresponse from people when they see it for thefirst time.

“People are always intrigued and enthusedby The Vini,” she said. “Our internal joke isthat it’s ‘the puppy.’ People want to hold it

and touch it. Once they have it in hand, theydon’t want to let it go. It’s so tactile andengages all of the senses. When they taste it,they continue to be impressed.”

She said that hotels are a primary marketfor The Vini. As mini-bars become a thing ofthe past, in-room amenities are becomingtheir replacement.

“The Vini offers the guest a convenient, fresh, delicious glass of fine wine withoutopening an entire bottle or half-bottle ashas been the only offering in-room previ-ously,” Fraser said. “It also provides thehotel with a luxury lifestyle offering thatinspires impulse buys with its unique, ele-gant and sexy package. It’s easy to consid-er having a glass of wine in-room, buthaving an entire bottle is too much of acommitment.”

Although she encourages people who havea new idea to pursue it, she also cautionsthem to go into it knowing that it will take alot of hard work.

“Any endeavor requires total commitmentand 110 percent of your time,” Fraser said.“It is not for the faint of heart and sleep isn’tan option. You must be totally devoted toyour vision and keep believing, even throughthe challenges. And there’ll be challenges.”

A fast-growing law firm, AssociationLaw Group (ALG), has joined the ranks ofleading businesses populating DowntownMiami’s Brickell neighborhood.

Association Law Group recently signed alease for 10,000 square feet of initial space, with an option to expand, in the penthousesuite of 1200 Brickell Avenue.

This new office space was selected byALG to provide ample room for its thrivinglaw practice that represents over 500 con-dominiums and homeowner associations inmore than 16 different counties throughoutFlorida as general counsel with a particularfocus on the collection of past due assess-ments. Among other top clients in Miami,ALG represents condominiums includingOne Miami, Blue, Mosaic, Venetia,Latitude West, 1110 Brickell and the presti-gious Bay Pointe Community.

In just five years, Association LawGroup has grown from a two-person lawpractice to nationally recognized lawfirm with 15 attorneys and over 50 staffmembers. What is the secret to ALG’ssuccess? Simply put, providing condo-

minium and homeowner associations inFlorida with exceptional, innovativelegal representation.

ALG has helped countless associations

throughout Florida recover from financialruin by standing up to big banks and zeal-ously fighting for past due maintenancefees to help associations get back on track

after the shock of the real estate crisis. In fact, ALG conceptualized an array of

new legal tools to help struggling associa-tions, including the Mortgage Terminator, which was applauded in Florida andacross the U.S. Specifically, the MortgageTerminator was created by ALG to helpaddress the problematic situation facingassociations when banks stall their fore-closure actions to avoid paying backmaintenance fees. These are fees associa-tions need to keep the buildings up andrunning.

ALG took these big banks to court andforced them into a legal ultimatum of eitherimmediately accepting title to thesedefaulted condo units or walking away andreleasing their mortgages from such unitsso its clients could sell them and recoverthe past due amounts.

“ALG’s move to Brickell marks a newchapter for our firm” explained BenSolomon, managing partner of ALG. “Ournew office located at 1200 Brickell Ave.will allow ALG to continue its growth andrepresent even more condominium andhomeowner associations throughoutFlorida.”

Through her professional dance careerthat spanned over two decades, formerprima ballerina Maria Teresa del Realbecame an expert at devising new and cre-ative ways to maintain the fitness levelsneeded to keep her dancingat top form.

Like many cross-trainers,del Real sought effective fit-ness props that would helpher achieve a strong, defined,well-aligned, elongatedphysique without bulking upthe muscles on her legs orarms.

After 20 successful yearsas a prima ballerina inEurope, del Real recentlymoved to South Florida andopened Barrebox, a boutiquefitness studio featuring hersignature ballet-inspired, cross-trainingworkout programs for non-dancers:

BalletFit, which incorporates basic balletsteps with the use of elastic bands (on thebarre and from above), resistance rings, light weights and medicine balls, and

BalletBox, a combination of boxingwith basic ballet movement. The one-hourclasses are designed for all levels and donot require prior dance experience.

“I am excited to share my expertise withfitness enthusiasts who are seeking theguidance of an experienced dance profes-sional like myself to diversify their work-out routines and improve their bodies,” delReal said. “The Barrebox method is a com-

pilation of carefully devised exercises cus-tomized for the non-dancer.”

These movements, techniques and exer-cises were developed out of her experi-ences with fellow ballet professionals, coaches and physical therapists.

Born in Miami and raised in San Juan,Puerto Rico, del Real wasconsidered a ballet wun-derkind when Ballets de SanJuan promoted her to princi-pal dancer at 17. Three yearslater, she won the bronzemedal at the VarnaInternational BalletCompetition. Soon after, delReal joined Pittsburgh BalletTheater as principal dancerand continued on to a stellarcareer in Europe performingwith the Royal Ballet ofFlanders, English NationalBallet, Scottish Ballet and

Birmingham Royal Ballet, among others. She also had the privilege to dance with

a prestigious cadre of male ballet starsincluding Rudolf Nureyev, FernandoBujones, Carlos Acosta and José ManuelCarreño.

HRH Queen Elizabeth II acknowledgeddel Real as one of the most distinguishedAmericans living in London and PrincessDiana invited del Real to perform for herand a select audience at KensingtonPalace.

The Miami Children’s Chorus, a CoralGables non-profit choral music educationand performance organization, is taking astand and making a difference in the livesof hundreds of South Florida children.

On Thursday, Mar. 20, MCC artisticadministrator Analy Mendez and MCCadvanced chorister Gabriela Hernandez-Fumero delivered close to 1,000 cans ofnon-perishable food, 200 toiletries, kidsclothes and baby clothes to the LeadershipLearning Center at St. John Bosco — anafter school program that provides home-work assistance, literacy, social skills, fit-ness, and creative arts programs to the chil-dren of the east Little Havana community.Donated items were collected by all 150-plus members of the Miami Children’sChorus throughout the month of March.

MCC began its work with theLeadership Learning Center in Januarythrough its “We Will Sing” choral out-reach project, through which the organiza-tion provides a free six-week choral expe-rience program in low-income/under-served communities.

The We Will Sing program helps chil-dren find their voices as they explore how

to warm-up, read music, and most impor-tantly how to work together to achieve acommon goal. We Will Sing also intro-duces concepts of respect, communication, commitment, leadership, discipline, and

professionalism. In addition, We Will Singserves as a mentoring program, as MCCchoristers volunteer their time to work withthe children in rehearsals and serve as pos-itive role models for them.

After working with the children atLeadership Learning Center through theWe Will Sing program, MCC advancedchorister, Gabriela Hernandez-Fumerodecided she would find a way to make aneven bigger impact in the lives of these andother Little Havana children. She startedthe Be The Change food/toiletires drive.

The MCC invites the Miami-DadeCounty community to Be The Change andhelp the children in our communities whoare most in need. Consider reaching out tochildren’s organization’s, such as theLeadership Learning Center, which are inneed of help to secure the health andgrowth of South Florida youth.

By Randye Karmin,MD, FACOGEvery day patients ask

me my opinion on what in-surance company offers thebest coverage? This is nota simple question to answer.Every company offers vari-ous kinds of plans. The fac-tors to weigh when decidingwhich one to choose are thetypes of services coveredand the costs. When I wentto medical school, I neverdreamed I would also needa degree in the art of under-standing health insurance. Here is a crash course on theterminology that drives us

all crazy when we visit the doctor.1. Copay— Most people know what this is. Your

copay is the amount of money you pay the doctor at thetime of your visit. It is deducted from the amount theinsurance company will eventually pay the physician.Usually, the copay is less for a primary care physicianlike an internist or family practitioner, and is more ex-pensive for a visit to a specialist, often even your gyne-cologist. Occasionally, insurance plans will allow you

a preventative visit each year with 100% coverage, meaning you will not be responsible for a copay.2. Deductible— Your deductible is the amount of

money you need to pay toward health care expenses be-fore the insurance company will contribute to or takeover the remaining cost. Every plan differs in what serv-ices apply toward the deductible. Some require you tomeet the deductible even for an office visit (ie. You donot have a “copay” only). Others only apply certain pro-cedures, lab tests, radiographic studies, and non-preven-tative physician services.3. Coinsurance—This one is tricky. Patients often

confuse “coinsurance” and “copay.” Your coinsuranceis a percentage of the allowable fees for medical servicesthat you are responsible for. It is not a set amount like acopay. It depends on the services performed and is cal-culated based on the amount of money the insurancecompany has agreed to pay the doctor for a particularservice based on the provider’s contract with that com-pany. Often a patient needs to meet their deductible be-fore “coinsurance” applies. For example, once thedeductible is met, for a patient who has a plan wherethere is a 20% coinsurance responsibility, the insurancecompany would pay 80% of the balance after the de-ductible has been met, and the patient would be respon-sible for the remaining 20%.4. Premium—Your premium is the amount of money

you pay, usually monthly, for the health insurance plan.

Usually this number is lower if you agree to a higher de-ductible or coinsurance, taking a chance that you maynot need many medical services. Higher premiumsapply if you want to ensure lower out of pocket costs forthe services themselves. Often employers will con-tribute to a portion of your premium and many times, the premium can be deducted from your paycheck be-fore taxes. While most offices do their best to verify a patient’s

benefits so that there are no surprises, it is ultimately thepatient’s responsibility to be informed about coverage.Do NOT take the word of an insurance agent when itcomes to purchasing individual plans. Make sure youdo your due diligence to read the documents carefullyand ensure that your coverage meets your needs. Finally, stay away from the hospital as much as pos-

sible. Any diagnostic testing or procedures that can beoffered in the doctor’s office or a free-standing facilitywill almost always cost you less than at a hospital. Takeadvantage of Health Savings and Flexible Spending ac-counts that may be offered by your employers; theseallow you to use pre-tax dollars to help you pay for pre-scriptions and out of pocket costs like copays, de-ductibles, and coinsurance. It’s complicated! Ask questions and be informed!Dr. Karmin is a Board Certified Ob/Gyn in private

Recognizing that women have unique health-care needs that they often push aside to meet thedemands of family and work, Mount SinaiMedical Center recently launched a new programto make it easier for women to get the care theyneed, when they need it.

On Friday, Mar. 8, Mount Sinai Medical Centercelebrated International Women’s Day with theinauguration of a new Women’s Centered CareProgram. Designed to meet the specific healthcareneeds of women, this program makes it easier forfemale patients, and their families, to access theexcellent medical care that Mount Sinai provides.

The program features a multidisciplinary net-work of physicians and healthcare professionalswho understand these needs and work together tooptimize women’s health and well-being. Thisdedicated team provides diagnosis, treatment andsupport services that are tailored to each individ-ual patient. Key physicians in the program aretrained in gender-specific medicine to fully under-stand the unique medical challenges that womenoften face.

“While most people are certainly aware of the obviousdifferences between men and women,” said Dr. VeronicaRodriguez McCloskey, cardiologist with the Mount SinaiHeart Institute and part of the network of physicians in theWomen’s Centered Care Program, “they may not be aware

that men and women react differently to some medicationsand that women are more vulnerable to some diseases andmay have different symptoms than men.

“For example, a man and woman may experience severechest pain or pressure when having a heart attack, but womenalso can experience a heart attack without chest pressure,” she

said. “Their symptoms often are more subtle.”Mount Sinai’s Women’s Centered Care Program

includes physicians who see patients on the hospital’smain campus in Miami Beach, as well as its satellitecenters in Aventura, Key Biscayne, Coral Gables andHialeah. The doctors’ specialties include cardiology, oncology, urology, endocrinology, obstetrics andgynecology, internal medicine, Alzheimer’s diseaseand memory disorders, diagnostic imaging, psychia-try, and more.

In addition, a healthcare navigator will assistpatients by helping find doctors, scheduling appoint-ments, answering health-related or financial ques-tions and coordinating services between subspecial-ties throughout the medical center. The navigator alsowill facilitate communication between the patientand her physicians.

“The healthcare navigator is a unique feature of ourprogram and a personalized service we are proud tooffer our patients,” said Dr. Estelamari Rodriguez, oncologist in the Mount Sinai Comprehensive CancerCenter and chair of the Women’s Centered CareProgram. “Here at Mount Sinai we want to make theexperience of going to a healthcare facility — gettingappointments and coordinating their care among all

Former Bank Lawyer Fightsfor Miami Homeowners

By Ann LinoShould I pay the mortgage on my home? What about the taxes and

condo fees? What’s the worst that can happen if I don’t pay? What’s the

best I can hope for?

There are so many people offering advice. Realtors will tell you to sell.

Bankruptcy attorneys will tell you to go bankrupt. Loan modification

services will tell you to ask nicely for a loan modification. One attorney

who spent years representing banks in foreclosures, Bruce Jacobs, will

tell you to negotiate from strength.

Bruce Jacobs is not only a former bank lawyer, he is also a foreclosure

defense client. “I didn’t want to go bankrupt or spend the rest of my life

paying for this mortgage mess,” said Bruce. “I had five mortgages on two

properties underwater by almost $500,000.00. I stopped paying and put

up a fight. Now, I have one property with one mortgage.”

There are plenty of reasons to fight. Banks got a bailout of $7.7 Trillion

in almost interest free loans from our taxpayer dollars. They pay out billions

in bonuses to Wall Street executives while Main Street is left to fight

for themselves. The loan modification programs are not working.

Homeowners run in circles before getting denied or offered a deal that

only helps the bank make more money.

Bruce is part of a national group of dedicated lawyers fighting back

against banks. They train at seminars around the country and online to

share resources and develop cutting edge strategies in foreclosure

defense. Many of the attorneys are former bank lawyers who, like Bruce,

are passionate about fighting for meaningful help for their clients.

Bruce has lectured on foreclosure defense at continuing legal education

seminars for other attorneys and realtor offices so more homeowners have

access to his strategies.

“The goal is either a meaningful loan modification with a principal

balance reduction, a release from the debt, or to fight to clear the mortgage

off the property,” said Bruce about most of his clients. “There are reasons

banks filed ‘robo-signed’ fraudulent documents in foreclosures all over

the country. Many have serious paperwork problems which makes

proving the right to foreclose in a

courtroom difficult.”
