BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILDTUESDAY 30 APRILDir: Benh Zeitlin USA 2012 91 mins

Cert:12A Language: EnglishStarring: Quvenzhane Wallis, Dwight Henry, Levy Easterly In a forgotten wetland community cut off from the restof the world by a sprawling levee, six year-old Hushpuppy existsvirtually as an orphan. With her mother long gone and her beloved but wild-living father Wink rarely at home, Hushpuppy is left to her own devices and thecompany of semi-feral animals. She perceives the natural world to be a fragile web ofliving, breathing things, in which the entire universe depends on everything fittingtogether just right. Certainly the most remarkable feature debut of the year and asensation at Sundance, Zeitlin’s visually stunning film approaches its quasi-mythicalsubject from a magical realist angle. It is a tribute to the courage and determination ofthe people of southern Louisiana in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. “I showed up fora two-month visit six years ago and I’m not going anywhere,” said the talenteddirector, who as well as Terrence Malick and Emir Kusturica also admires Jan Švankmajer, with whom he worked for a while. - Karlovy Vary International Festival 2012

Written and performed by Alison Skilbeck

SATURDAY 4 MAY“Brilliantly observed, richly comic characters, all playedto painful pefection – a wonderful evening” Alan Aychbourn

This is a subtly funny, ironic and clever play telling the story of four middle agedwomen on a journey of self discovery, all dealing with their own pain, and allunknowingly linked to one another. Set on a minimalist stage, and with only slightwardrobe changes, the four distinct monologues, astutely written and performed byformer Archers star Alison Skilbeck, are delicately woven together. The actressskilfully transforms into each highly individually woman, delving into their psyches, and delivering a compelling performance that draws you into the inner world of eachcharacter, directly connecting with their separate emotional processes.8pm • €16/14
