Welcome to the wine list of Birkenhead House. Having spent much of my working life involved with wine, I have tried to create a wine list that has a true representation from the wines in South Africa and balanced with wines of both New World and the Old World in style, providing wines to suit most tastes and palates. I am often asked what my favourite wine is and my answer would be that I really do not have one. There are so many great wines made in South Africa that it depends upon the occasion, what I am eating, the time of year but I think most importantly the company I’m in. I have selected a range of House wines from our surrounding areas to offer a variety of grape types to suit many dishes, which are all available by the glass or bottle. This wine list is a work in progress and hopefully will never be finished. Please also note that some of the vintages offered are rare and we might not carry large quantities. If you have the time look through the list there are some fantastic wines from both individual family producers to large winemaking companies. They all have their place on our list and I have tasted them all. If you would like to talk about a particular wine or need some help selecting, please feel free to ask. However I am a great believer in “Drink what you like, when you like.” Wine is all part of the occasion, the more you enjoy what we have to offer at Birkenhead House the better the wine will taste. Happy imbibing, Ricardo Roux

BLENDED WHITE WINES

In the old world the majority of wines are blends of two or more grape varieties and wines are bought solely on the quality of the estate or area that they are grown in rather than the grape varieties used. Blends allow an estate to produce a wine that truly reflects the best of what the estate has to offer. ASHBOURNE SANDSTONE 2009 ALC 12.5% VOL R 550 A clear, pale golden colour. Showing very complex aromatics. Lovely honey, green peas, litchis and petals all emerge on the nose. The palate shows a lovely mouth feel together with a waxy, weighty character. This is a serious, grown-up wine, not unlike a great dry white Bordeaux. 80% Sauvignon Blanc, 15% Chardonnay and 5% Sémillon. Hemel & Aarde Valley

AVONDALE CYCLUS 2009 ALC 13.5% VOL R 770 With a soft, rich nose of violets and peach, and just a hint of frangipani. This is beautifully carried through to the palate where the intense flavours of pear, pineapple, apricot and fig are rounded off with smooth, subtle oak for a creamy, long-structured finish. Paarl

CREATION SAUVIGNON BLANC / SEMILLON 2014 ALC 14% VOL R 250 Light straw-yellow in colour, with glints of green. The invigorating, salty bouquet, reminiscent of the fresh sea breezes caressing our vineyards, is complemented by delightful hints of green fig. SIJNN 2013 ALC 14% VOL R 550 An attractive straw colour. A lovely mineral, pithy stone fruit nose with a hint of honey & nutty complexity with a fresh, full textured palate Excellent with a wide range of food from rich fish, seafood, creamy poultry or as an aperitif. Malgas

THE SADIE FAMILY PALLADIUS 2007 ALC 14.5% VOL R 1100 The qualities of the 2007 vintage we embrace are those of restraint aromatic profile and some very fine spicy aromas. The palate is more restrained as well with impressive notes of minerality and some very well structured tannin and an acidity that finishes the wine off in a very long aftertaste. A blend of 45% Chenin Blanc, 20% Grenache Blanc, 15% Clairette Blance, 10% Viognier and 10% Chardonnay. Malmesbury

THE SADIE FAMILY PALLADIUS 2010 ALC 14.5% VOL R 1200 The 2010 Palladius is a blend of a spectrum of grape varieties similar in style to the 2008 vintage. It displays characters of tropical fruits, limey notes and slight nuances of almond and hay. The aromatics also have a salty, mineral character that comes through on the mouth feel and finish. The 2010 vintage displays a firmer acidity and freshness, giving structure and length. Malmesbury

CHARDONNAY

Chardonnay has had a checkered history in South Africa with some of the first cuttings so named being eventually identified as the very much less exciting Auxerrois. Naturally this was some time ago and the quality of clones planted has since improved.

ATARAXIA 2013 ALC 13.5% VOL R 480 A chiselled, focused wine that effortlessly manages to be both subtle and intense. It has a rich core of fiercely expressive grapefruit, white flowers, pear and grilled hazelnuts aromas and flavours. Creaminess and intriguing complexity define this stylish. Hemel & Aarde Valley

BOUCHARD FINLAYSON MISSIONVALE 2012 ALC 14% VOL R 495 This is an intensely focussed wine of near perfect balance. It is fresh, marginally oaked for six months with an almost white peachy crispness, mixed with a complex yeasty orchestration of flavours. It ends with a tang of richness on the palate. Hemel & Aarde Valley

BOUCHARD FINLAYSON SANS BARRIQUE 2014 ALC 13% VOL R 250 Crafted in a Burgundian Chablis style for wine lovers who like their Chardonnay unhindered by the taste of oak. It projects a strong tropical and citrus fruitiness while not overpowering the dry mineral tones on the mid-palate. Hemel & Aarde Valley

CRYSTALLUM THE AGNES 2014 ALC 13.5% VOL R 380 The third vintage of The Agnes retains the freshness and life of the 09, but is a more seductive wine. The palate is zesty with strong lemon and lime flavours coating a textured, fleshy core. Hemel and Aarde Valley

HAMILTON RUSSELL 2014 ALC 13% VOL R 655 This Chardonnay is again different to most New World Chardonnays. A prominent core of intense pear fruit aromas and flavours is brought beautifully into focus by a tight line of natural acid and a dry minerality Hemel & Aarde Valley

IONA 2012 ALC 13.5% VOL R 390 Rich, creamy and nutty with a lemony acidity, strong mineral undertones and a discreet use of French oak. 50% of the wine is wild fermented in French oak of which only 20% is new wood. Careful stirring of the lees gives a rich, concentrated mouth feel. Elgin

LIEBEN 2012 ALC 14% VOL R 480 The 2014 unfolds a bouquet of fragrant wild flowers, litchi and almond. Between citrus layers of lime and grapefruit an elegant minerality fills the palate and leaves a lingering honeycomb finish laced with the subtle fragrance of new oak. Coastal

PAUL CLUVER 2011 ALC 13.5% VOL R 480 Tangerine fruit and citrus blossom fragrances are apparent, with hints of vanilla pod and almond flakes. These characteristics follow through onto the palate. The fine, fresh acidity is natural, and adds poise and focus to the wine. Elgin

SPRINGFIELD METHODE ANCIENNE 2011 ALC 13.5% VOL R 680 This vintage is in the ancient style of Burgundy, rarely is this technique with wild yeast and no fining/filtration used in the new world. Thus, a wine of distinctive and classical character. Tropical fruit nuances layered by lime and cream. Robertson

SAUVIGNON BLANC

Piercingly aromatic, crisp variety solely responsible for some of the world’s most popular, and most distinctive dry white wines; Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, and a host of Sauvignons and Fumé Blanc from outside France. BOUCHARD FINLAYSON 2014 ALC 13% VOL R 240 The vineyards, located close to the cold Walker Bay Atlantic Ocean enjoy consistent moderate summer temperatures which provide fine floral flavours. These are enhanced by heavy clay soils where the flavour tends to be more tropical than herbaceous. This elevated vintage presents a really fresh generously bodied wine with full zesty aromatic flavours, a long mineral finish and promise to develop with a full palate. Hemel & Aarde Valley DIEMERSDAL 8 ROWS 2014 ALC 13% VOL R 355 An intense wine with concentrated aromas on the nose that follows through on the palate. The wine shows a strong core of minerality with a flinty elegance on the nose with a rounded mouth feel and balanced acidity on the finish. A seamless wine where all components are in perfect balance. Durbanville IONA 2014 ALC 13% VOL R 285 On the nose, high floral notes of honeysuckle, lemon zest and ruby grapefruit over-lay Iona’s distinctive herbal undertones. The palate is keenly balanced, showing cut green apples and lime marmalade followed by great minerality and length. Elgin SOUTHERN RIGHT 2014 ALC 13% VOL R 210 This vibrant, classically styled Sauvignon Blanc presents with a brilliant lemon-lime colour. The nose is complex, featuring an array of tropical fruit, figs and gooseberries. Hemel & Aarde Valley VERGELEGEN RESERVE 2014 ALC 14% VOL R 790 The 2014 Schaapenberg Sauvignon Blanc is extremely aromatic with ripe passion fruit and guava, grapefruit, a touch of lemongrass and good minerality. The aftertaste is long and clean. Schaapenberg - Helderberg

I only drink Champagne when I'm happy, and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company, I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I am

not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty. Lily Bollinger (1899-1977), proprietor of French Champagne house Bollinger from 1941 to 1971

CHENIN BLANC South Africa now has more than three times as much Chenin planted as in France and the Cape’s strain of the variety, often called Steen, constitutes almost 30% of the countries entire vineyard.

BEAUMONT HOPE MARGUERITE 2013 ALC 13.5% VOL R 420 Seductive honey notes with hints of botrytis and extra subtleties from native yeast. Coastal JEAN DANEEL SIGNATURE 2012 ALC 13.5% VOL R 345 JEAN DANEEL SIGNATURE 2011 ALC 14% VOL R 375 Tones of lime, butterscotch, honeysuckle, baked apples and dried apricots which shows in the acidity of the wine. The wine was left in the barrel for 1 year like previous vintages with battonage to give the wine more complexity and weight on the palate. Coastal POST HOUSE 2013 ALC 13.5% VOL R 225 Nose offers peach, citrus and liquorice. Rich and full-bodied palate with delicate flavours of tropical fruit, orange and minerality. Stellenbosch - Helderberg SIMONSIG CHENIN AVEC CHÉNE 2012 ALC 14% VOL R 370 A very zesty, lively Chenin Blanch with thatch, white peach, lemon and whiffs of botrytis are all present. BUKKETRAUBE

Sebastian Englerth is supposed to have created it in Randersacker in the 19th century, although an Alsatian origin has also been claimed. It may also be known as Bouquettraube, although this has also been argued to be a different variety. Bukketraube is a cross of Silvaner and Schiava Grossa. CEDERBERG 2011 ALC 13.5% VOL R 170 A well-balanced wine with an exotic yet delicate character, laced with a crisp acidity. Expressive floral aromas, hints of dried mango, apricots and honey blend to form this complex nose component. Cederberg

PINOT GRIGIO

Pinot gris is thought to be a mutant clone of the Pinot noir variety, it normally has a grayish-blue fruit but the grapes can have a brownish pink to black and even white appearance. The flavors can range from ripe tropical fruit notes of melon and mango to some botrytis-influenced flavors. In Italy, Pinot grigio grapes are often harvested early to retain the refreshing acidity and minimize some of the overt-fruitiness of the variety, creating a more neutral flavor profile. ARENDSKLOOF 2014 ALC 13% VOL R 220 A fuller style wine with tropical, floral and citrus flavours. A wine that fills your whole palate and can be enjoyed with or without food. Worcester

SÉMILLON

Sémillon is the golden grape from South West France and one of the unsung heroes of white wine production. Blended with its traditional partner Sauvignon Blanc, this vine variety is the key ingredient in the great dry and sweet white wines of Bordeaux, including Sauternes. Sémillon on its own is also a great food wine. NITIDA 2012 ALC 14% VOL R 225 Fine silkiness with full fruited aromas and developed fruit is all in harmony with well integrated oak, acid and sugars. Partly barrel aged with a dash of Sauvignon Blanc for extra zest. Durbanville

VIOGNIER

Some believe that Viognier is related to Gewürztraminer because of its aromatic qualities, which also make it the ideal wine for lightly spiced dishes for those of us who prefer drinking dry white wine. Not a widely planted grape yet, it has been associated with the Rhône in France, especially Condrieu. CREATION 2013 ALC 14% VOL R 195 A promising pale gold, clear and shiny in the glass. Abundantly fruity and forthcoming yet refined on the nose with fragrant white peach aromas mingling with a rich, creamy character. These follow well onto the palate and combine seamlessly with crisp minerality and bouncy, well-integrated natural acidity. Walker Bay

Page 11: Birkenhead House Wine List November 2015 - The Royal Portfolio · An elegant well balanced unoaked Chardonnay with fresh citrus fruit aromas, subtle notes of white blossom, melon

RED BLENDS

In the old world the majority of wines are blends of two or more grape varieties and wines are bought solely on the quality of the estate or area that they are grown in rather than the grape varieties used.

ARENDSKLOOF 2012 ALC 14.5% VOL R 420 Rich, spicy chocolate plum nose which follows on the palate. Lively pepper and black cherry fruit flavours with well integrated oak. Worcester

BEAUMONT VETRUVIAN 2009 ALC 14.5% VOL R 630 Two years in barrel and two year in bottle and a complex blend of flavours give this wine a fresh but well knitted texture and flavour. Still youth full with red berry fruit, fine grainy tannin and superb length. Bot River

BUITENVERWACHTING CHRISTINE 2008 ALC 14.5% VOL R 640 This special cuvee offers rich, ripe berry flavours with beautiful nutty and wood vanilla characters. A perfect harmony between strength and finesse. Constantia

COLUMELLA 2009 ALC 14.5% VOL R 1800 Deep crimson wine, a real cocktail of flavours on the nose with bracing layers of red fruit on the palate. This wine has a super smooth palate entry yet intense ambition. Swartland

COLUMELLA 2010 ALC 14% VOL R 1750 Wonderfully expressive nose showing red and black berries, fynbos and lilies. Great fruit purity, scintillating line of acidity and ever so fine tannins, making for a wine of great poise. Perfectly conceived – serious and age-worthy. Swartland

COLUMELLA 2011 ALC 14% VOL R 2050 The 2011 Columella has much more defined and lifted spicy and bright berry aromas with some strong earthy elements. The structural integrity of the wine also seems much more tightly knitted and although the tannins are softer than those of the previous two vintages, it still presents good ageing potential with the lifted freshness. In strong contrast to the last two vintages, 2011 will be more immediately approachable but this in no way suggests that it is a lesser wine. Swartland

DE TOREN Z 2010 ALC 15% VOL R 550 DE TOREN FUSION V 2012 ALC 14.5% VOL R 1225 DE TOREN FUSION V 2011 ALC 15% VOL R 1250 DE TOREN FUSION V 2010 ALC 15% VOL R 1400 An attractive deep tawny red colour with a tender bouquet of cassis and green peppers. 2005 Short, early and particularly challenging. Bone dry winter followed by early-season rains, sparking disease and excessive plant vigour; then prolonged heat waves. Concentrated if alcoholic reds; whites mostly average, some stellar exceptions.

2006 Excellent and largely problem free. (Though complicated by Western Cape power cuts) Perhaps the best white wine vintage in a decade – particularly expressive Sauvignons and Chenin’s. Fleshy, mild tannined reds with lower alcohols all round.

2007 Exceptional wines were made from the 2007 vintage and winemakers keenly anticipate top quality red as well as white wines. The cold winter and favourable climatic conditions of 2006 set the scene for the 06/07 season. It was a very healthy season. The crop ripened practically disease free. The harvest was long and drawn out with early cultivars ripening up to 10 days earlier.

2008 Long, wet, late and challenging but also unusually cool season, favouring elegance in both reds and whites, with ripeness generally achieved at lower alcohols.

2009 Perhaps one of the greatest Cape vintages to date but, time will tell. The harvest came in late thus giving the grapes longer time on the vine to achieve great balance between sugar and acid. Both whites and reds look stellar. Standing out is Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Shiraz, Cabernet and Merlot.

2010 The overall cool climate during the first part of ripening was beneficial to flavour retention in cultivars such as Sauvignon Blanc. February and March experienced the usual sporadic heat waves. The heat wave at the beginning of March 2010 which lasted longer than a week will certainly go down in the annals. Due to the smaller crop most blocks could be picked at optimal ripeness. The decrease in volumes also meant that cellar space was often not a problem, and winemakers could allow prolonged skin contact. Winemakers and viticulturists are more than satisfied with the quality of the grapes that were harvested. Grapes were healthy with good flavours and analyses. Bunches were generally looser than normal and berries smaller, with an excellent fruit to skin ratio resulting in intense colour in the red wines.

2011 Despite a difficult year the producers, viticulturists and winemakers are positive that the wines would comply with the consumers‟ requirements and standards. Although in some instances the flavours in white cultivars do not live up to expectations, the white wines in general are described as being attractive and balanced. The smaller berry sizes in red grapes resulted in intense colour, soft tannins and good structure.

2012 With August generally warmer than usual, bud burst was a week early in some blocks. Vineyards initially showed good growth at the start of the new growing season, but abnormally cold and rainy conditions later on resulted in uneven flowering and berry set with high disease pressure, which producers managed to control satisfactorily. In general, there is much excitement about the 2012 vintage, a specific characteristic being optimal ripeness levels achieved at lower sugars, this in turn leading to lower alcohol levels. 2013 Producers, viticulturists and winemakers are excited about a promising crop in terms of quality. The moderate harvest season contributed to intense colour, exceptional flavour and good structure in the red cultivars, especially for Pinotage appearing good in terms of size and quality. Throughout the industry winemakers anticipate excellent fruity and tropical white wines with fresh characteristics. 2014 Producers, viticulturists and winemakers look forward to a promising harvest with regard to quality. Moderate climate conditions during the harvest season contributed to intense colour, exceptional flavour and good structure in the red cultivars. White wines are expected to be particularly fruity and tropical, with fresh characteristics.
