In the mountains, it is possible to find the spectacular Lammergeiers, as well as many other raptors and other birds, such as the Ring Ouzel, the Alpine Accentor, the Snow Finch and the Citril Finch. Steppe birds are extensively represented as well: all the Iberian larks, including the Dupont’s Lark, Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Stone Curlew, Little Bustard and many others. In autumn and winter the Wallcreeper can be found on many of our cliffs. Birds of marked Mediterranean character such as the Rock Thrush, Black-eared Wheatear, Black Wheatear, European Bee-eater, and the Hoopoe are easy to find in our region. Small migratory insectivores form a broad community with such outstanding species as the Spectacled Warbler, Western Orphean Warbler, Western Bonelli’s Warbler, Iberian Chiffchaff, and many more. One of the best Iberian populations of Great Bittern is located in the wetlands of Navarra, where Red-crested Pochards, Black-necked Grebes, Purple Swamphen, and the Bearded Reedling live among others. BirdsThere are nearly 350 reported species, of which 250 are seen regularly. The variety of habi-tats favours this high diversity, so that there are birds and bird phenomena of great interest throughout the year. In addi-tion, Navarre is also located along one of the most popular migration routes, so that large flocks of birds cross the region in spring and autumn.

In the mountains, it is possible to find the spectacular Lammergeiers, as well as many other raptors and other birds, such as the Ring Ouzel, the Alpine Accentor, the Snow Finch and the Citril Finch.

Navarre: Land of diversityThe geographical location of Navarre, to the North of the Iberian Peninsula, with the Bay of Biscay to the Northwest, at the western end of the Pyrenees and North of the Ebro Valley, makes it a meeting point of Alpine, Atlantic and Mediterranean climatic influences. This has prompted a succession of landscapes with great contrasts within quite a small territory (just 10,000 km2) resulting in one of the highest levels of biodiversity in Europe.

Where to observe nature in NavarreOf the many fascinating nature enclaves in Navarre, we have selected these Recommended Places for their natural values, their landscape and their ease of access.The sum of these Recommended Places houses practically all of the birds that are found in Navarre on a regular basis, as well as some interesting and varied flora and fauna.

1. Señorío de Bertiz Natural ParkAtlantic countryside and humid hardwood forests.Black Woodpecker, White-backed Woodpecker, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Marsh Tit, Common Bullfinch.

2. Ultzama-Basaburua oak forestsAtlantic, valley floor oak forests.Red Kite, Iberian Chiffchaff, Marsh Tit, Common Bullfinch, Agile Frog, European Mink, bats.

3. Sierra de Urbasa and AndíaNatural ParkLimestone mountains, beech forests, mountain pastures and rocky crags.Lammergeier, Egyptian Vulture, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Common Redstart, mountain flora.

9. Las Cañas Reservoir Nature ReserveOpen water, reed beds, agricultural environments and river groves.Colony of herons, Bearded Ree-dling, numerous migratory birds.

10. Arga Groves.Mediterranean fluvial fo-rests, rocky banks.Egyptian Vulture, Eagle Owl, Blue Rock Thrush, Eurasian Wryneck, Euro-pean Mink.

4. Lindus-Ibañeta:Pyrenean mountain passes: key location for migrating birds.Lammergeier, Golden Eagle, Black Wo-odpecker, White-backed Woodpecker; migratory birds: birds of prey, Black Stork, Common Crane, pigeons.
