A wide range of different habitats have given Navarre an extremely diverse flora and more than 2,500 species and subspecies can be found in this small territory. It should be noted that there are more than 70 taxa of orchids and
some 260 Iberian and local endemisms.
In addition to birds, we can find other interesting vertebrates: am-phibians such as the Agile Frog, the Pyrenean Frog and the Pyre-nean Newt; reptiles including the Ocellated Lizard, the Bedriaga’s Skink, the Iberian Worm Lizard and the Spanish Psammodromus; and mammals with specimens of Chamois, Pyrenean Desman, Stoat, the dwindling European Mink, and a community of bats that is very well represented.

Ecoturismo/Birding Navarra is a club founded under the auspices of the De-partment of Tourism of the Navarre Government which brings together com-
panies and professionals devoted to birding and nature tourism. These include activity companies, guides and accommodation providers. Club membership guarantees the quality of the services being offered and the implementation of a manual of best practices fostering respect for the natural environment in
which they work. Are you looking for a guide? Accommodation? Visit our website:

BirdsThere are nearly 350 reported species, of which 250 are seen regularly. The variety of habi-tats favours this high diversity, so that there are birds and bird phenomena of great interest throughout the year. In addi-tion, Navarre is also located along one of the most popular migration routes, so that large flocks of birds cross the region in spring and autumn.
In the mountains, it is possible to find the spectacular Lammergeiers, as well as many other raptors and other birds, such as the Ring Ouzel, the Alpine Accentor, the Snow Finch and the Citril Finch.
Steppe birds are extensively represented as well: all the Iberian larks, including the Dupont’s Lark, Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Stone Curlew, Little Bustard and many others.
In autumn and winter the Wallcreeper can be found on
many of our cliffs.
Birds of marked Mediterranean character such as the Rock Thrush, Black-eared Wheatear, Black Wheatear, European Bee-eater, and the
Hoopoe are easy to find in our region.
Small migratory insectivores form a broad
community with such outstanding species as
the Spectacled Warbler, Western Orphean Warbler, Western Bonelli’s Warbler,
Iberian Chiffchaff, and many more.
One of the best Iberian populations of Great Bittern is located in the wetlands of Navarra, where Red-crested Pochards, Black-necked Grebes,
Purple Swamphen, and the Bearded Reedling live among others.
There are up to 7 species of woodpeckers living in Navarre, including the Black Woodpecker, White-backed Woodpecker, Middle Spotted Woodpecker and Eurasian Wryneck.

The community of invertebrates has not
been studied in depth yet, but we do know that
it includes such gems as the Apollo butterfly and the Spanish
Moon Moth, as well as more than 50 species of dragonflies.

Navarre: Land of diversityThe geographical location of Navarre, to the North of the Iberian Peninsula, with the Bay of Biscay to the Northwest, at the western end of the Pyrenees and North of the Ebro Valley, makes it a meeting point of Alpine, Atlantic and Mediterranean climatic influences. This has prompted a succession of landscapes with great contrasts within quite a small territory (just 10,000 km2) resulting in one of the highest levels of biodiversity in Europe.
Where to observe nature in NavarreOf the many fascinating nature enclaves in Navarre, we have selected these Recommended Places for their natural values, their landscape and their ease of access. The sum of these Recommended Places houses practically all of the birds that are found in Navarre on a regular basis, as well as some interesting and varied flora and fauna.
