Birdville ISD Board of Trustees Meetings CTE Student Organizations Recognized

JROTC Honor Unit of Distinction Designation

It is a privilege to recognize JROTC instructors for their extraordinary success for receiving the Honor Unit

of Distinction designations at Haltom High School, Richland High School, and Birdville High School.

U.S Army Junior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (JROTC) is a congressionally mandated program that

focuses on the youth-oriented mission “Motivating Young People to be Better Citizens”. It is one of the

largest youth programs in the world with high school students participating while enrolled in secondary

educational programs. JROTC encompasses a myriad of teaching goals focused on leadership, teamwork,

character education, personal responsibility, a sense of accomplishment, and service to the nation.

The JROTC Program came to Birdville ISD in 1958 at the original Birdville High School which is now

Haltom High School. Another unit was established in 1961 with the opening of Richland High School and

in 2001 a unit was established at the “new” Birdville High School. We truly appreciate Birdville ISD’s

dedication and support of this outstanding program. July 1st marks the 60th anniversary of the JROTC

program in Birdville ISD.

This year during the JROTC Program Assessment all three high schools received the Honor Unit with

Distinction designation. Only 5% of the multi-school JROTC districts such as ours achieve the HUD status

for all of their JROTC Units.

It is a privilege to recognize the outstanding JROTC leaders and instructors, Colonel Robert Fallis, Haltom

High school instructors Sergeant Scott Murrah & Sergeant Ricardo Lopez, Richland High school

instructors, Captain Warren Harris & Mister Paul Dietrich, Birdville High school instructors Captain

George Jons & First Sergeant Roy Hunter.

Congratulations to these instructors for achieving the highest level, Honor Unit of Distinction designation.

You have brought recognition to your JROTC programs & to Birdville ISD.

CTE International Finalists DECA International Career Development Conference

It is a privilege to recognize two Birdville High school students who were finalists at the DECA Interna-

tional Career Development Conference, in Atlanta, Georgia, April 21-24.

DECA is an international, co-curricular Career & Technology Student Organization of over 225,000

members with a mission to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality

and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

The competition in Atlanta consisted of 20,000 students from throughout the United States, Guam, Puerto

Rico, Virgin Island, and 9 countries including Canada, China & Germany, with approximately 200

students competing in each event.

The team of Ryan Shannon and Emma Wright, BHS Seniors, competed in a 30-page marketing research

written project that included an oral presentation to industry judges, and placed as international finalists in

the Hospitality and Tourism Operations Research event. Ryan is a two-year member of DECA and has

won at state and competed on the international level for the past two years. Emma is also a second year

member of BHS DECA who was a finalist at the state level last year.

Students achieve national recognition because of dedicated teachers. It is a privilege to recognize

Marketing teachers from Birdville High School, Emily Shipman and Chad Lewis.

These students are the perfect example of a BISD Portrait of a Graduate. These relevant events and the

rigorous competitions showed that they exhibit competence as empowered learners, responsible citizens,

global competitors and innovative entrepreneurs.

Congratulations to these outstanding students and their teachers for achieving tremendous success. You

have brought honor to your families, to your school, to BISD, and to the State of Texas.

Kentucky, June 25-30, with approximately 16,000 students, teachers and business partners in attendance.

The BCTAL Automotive Technology chapter had national success.

Matt Dages, Birdville High School student, placed third in the Mobile Electronics competition that

included a written test and demonstrating competency in skills stations including market radios, power

windows, and navigation and sound systems.

Educators Rising

The 2018 Educators rising National Conference was held in Orlando, Florida, June 21-25.

Three BCTAL students placed in the Researching Learning Challenges Event, that required research to be

conducted and presented to judges on a plan with solutions to assist students with dyslexia. The team mem-

bers are Madison Bolling, Chris Mercer and Lily Wiser, Birdville High School graduates.

We attribute our students’ successes not only to their hard work but to the dedication of outstanding teach-

ers. It is a privilege to recognize Automotive Technology teachers Olin Harrington, Jesse Hackfeld and

Antoine Sanders and Education and Training Teacher Karen Kallas. Congratulations to these

students and their teachers for achieving at the highest level as national winners. You have brought recog-
