Bird Fall Winter 2012 NewsletterTRANSCRIPT
his new potash storage facility, part of otash orporation s overall mine e pansion project, is
constructed with over one million square feet of stainless steel cladding he two new buildings (1,000 feet and 1,225 feet long) are 310 feet wide by 135 feet high and can store approximately 05,000 tons of potash
he buildings include ,500 tons of structural steel and 36,000 cubic yards of concrete — nearly 1 football elds can t inside these two buildings he stored potash is transferred out of the building by way of ve 200 foot long conveyors in reclaim tunnels to waiting truc s and railcars
he large scale of this project did not slow the Bird team down as they overcame complex obstacles he building erection required extensive
coordination and planning as the massive trusses — as long as 1 feet and weighing tons each were assembled using ve 500 ton cranes Also, over 70% of all 135 foot reach man lifts available in North America were used, which required the team to source lifts from locations as far away as exas and certify them to anadian standards Nevertheless, the project was successfully delivered achieving zero lost time injuries with over 70,000 man hours completed in 7 6 days

Located within the boundaries of the orld eritage District, the new elementary Bluenose Academy houses o er 600 students he school incorporates characteristics of the traditional architecture of the former Bluenose Academy built circa 1 06
he construction of the Bluenose Academy was challenged by the requirement to obtain LEED Gold certi cation he sustainable building includes solar panels and walls to generate heat for hot water, electricity and air systems Satisfying the 100 fresh air turnover requirement, perforated metal collector panels were installed on the south facing wall allowing solar radiation to heat the air behind the panels entilation fans then draw in the heated air, which is distributed by the A system ithout compromising the schedule, the Bird team was able to deliver all the LEED requirements to the client on time by employing a commissioning manager on-site to oversee the installation of all solar energy technologies used
he Athabasca hipewyan irst Nations of ce building and vehicle maintenance facility is the rst of its ind in ort c urray to target LEED® Gold certi cation he three-storey of ce building features comple energy ef cient technologies and practices including an interior living wall and construction waste diversion plan he e terior nishes are accented by an atrium roof structure that is carried by 5 foot high architectural glulam columns and beams Situated ne t to the of ce building is the single-storey vehicle maintenance facility
Bird wor ed closely with the client to manage their budget constraints by prioriti ing wor and material delivery pac ages he team employed construction phasing to ensure wor remained
on budget and schedule urthermore, the LEED requirements of the building imposed many installation challenges of the complex systems used including the 160 solar roof panels, rainwater collection equipment and energy ef cient mechanical components

emergency operations control centre
he new Emergency perations ontrol entre houses the ity of algary s disaster services unit and a state-of-the-art operations room he facility is self-sustaining for up to 72 hours by providing off-grid power and water, food storage and cleansing areas for those managing municipal operations during an emergency
he ma ority of the three-storey facility is 35 feet below ground he bene ts of the subterranean facility include increased security and excellent insulation value, ma ing the centre more energy ef cient and contributing to the LEED Gold certi cation target
Sustainable strategies included reusing existing materials — the glulam beams were removed from an existing building on the site prior to demolition and reused in the media pavilion on the east side of the site Approximately 7 of the pro ect s waste was diverted from the land ll
Bird constructed a high-performance waterproo ng and building envelope to ensure the underground portion of the building is waterproof he team achieved this by using bentonite sheet waterproo ng and waterproo ng additive in the concrete mix

As the contractor selected to design and build the new clinical support building, Bird success ull deli ered a two store o ce building and two le els o underground par ing With low energy mechanical systems and lighting, the building is targeting LEED Gold certi cation onstructed in accordance with British olumbia s Wood irst nitiati e, Bird introduced a number of local wood materials including unique pre-manufactured cedar panels, tongue and groo e cedar siding, a hea y timber frame and wood structural systems
hallenged by an acti e site, the team began by performing an eight hour shutdown to an e isting steam line in order to relocate it so construction could commence he steam line too four hours to cool, allowing the team a mere few hours to successfully complete the relocation, which had to be performed twice throughout the pro ect Bird wor ed simultaneously with the client by sharing site facilities including the loading doc Also, the team accommodated the client s emergency helicopter that landed multiple times per day impeding Bird s ability to operate its tower crane hrough effecti e and ef cient communications between the owner and the Bird team, the project was delivered on time to allow sequential phases of the hospital redevelopment to follow

aintenance angar No 1 for Wing anadian orces Base renton is built to accommodate the
new -177 Globemaster , one of the largest aircraft in the world he massive building has a 13 storey high clear span of 216 feet in each of the two hangar bays Bird leveraged its expertise in building information modelling (B ) to manage the construction of the facility s complex mechanical and electrical systems By generating the design as a B 3D model, the team was able to identify and resolve system con icts before fabrication and installation commenced
he maintenance hangar features many advanced technologies including anada s rst telescoping platform that descends from an overhead gantry, allowing technicians overhead access to the entire aircraft Bird also installed and commissioned the engineered foam re suppression system he high expansion foam generators are able to deploy four feet of foam within one minute of activation and extinguish a re within three minutes
With New Brunswic s senior population expected to double over the next 20 years, Bird was commissioned to construct phase one of the Loch Lomond illa Nursing ome he 100-bed facility embraces green design and building practices with a stormwater detention pond and two glass roof atria, allowing gardens to thrive within the home year-round
After Bird was awarded the project, the construction drawings proceeded in eight phases to deliver schedule ef ciency and cost savings to the client he coordination of phased tendering added another level of complexity to the job, requiring the heavy involvement of Bird s securement department to ensure the project remained on budget
Loch Lomond illa Nursing ome is phase one of two to be completed for the client Recently, Bird was awarded phase two at a construction value of $1 million Bird began wor ing with the owner in 2006 and has continued its relationship by successfully delivering numerous jobs on time and budget
