Company profileVacunek S.L. is a recent spin-off from Neiker-Tecnalia (Basque Institute for Agrarian Research andDevelopment). Our two objectives are the development of an efficacious vaccine against paratuberculosisin cattle that does not interfere with the diagnosis of tuberculosis and the production of robust PCR-based diagnostic kits for animal diseases.
Our first marketed products are PCR-based diagnostic kits for animal diseases developed at Neiker.However, Vacunek’s main focus is to develop, register and commercialise a new vaccine againstparatuberculosis for use in cattle. Johne’s disease or paratuberculosis is an infectious disease producedby Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis that affects primarily ruminants but can also infectmany other animals (foxes, rabbits, mice, etc). It has also been suggested that this bacterium mightbe a factor for the development of Crohn’s disease in humans. Available commercial vaccines againstparatuberculosis cannot be used in cattle due interferences with the test for tuberculosis.
