Introduction

Bionic Derivation of the word “BIONIC”(BIo+electrONIC ) Definition

History The word “BIONIC” was coined by Jack E Steele Bionic eye was designed by Mr. Gregg Suaning

HOW OUR RETINA WORKS?

Page 6: Bionic eye

BLINDNESS MEANS LOSS OF VISION. A COMPLETELY BLIND INDIVISUAL

UNABLE TO SEE ANYTHING EVEN WITH THE USE OF EYE GLASSES , CONTACT LENSES , MEDICINE OR SURGERY.

8O% OF BLINDNESS OCCURS IN PEOPLE OVER 50 YEARS OLD.

COMMON CAUSES :- MACULAR DEGENERATION , TRAUMATIC INJURIES , GLAUCOMA etc.

LESS COMMON CAUSES :- VIT-A DEFICIENCY , RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA , RETINOPATHY OF PREMATURITY etc.

THE BIONIC SYSTEM

1: Camera on glasses views image2: Signals are sent to hand-held device3: Processed information is sent back to glasses and wirelessly transmitted to receiver under surface of eye4: Receiver sends information to electrodes in retinal implant5: Electrodes stimulate retina to send information to brain

ADVANTAGES

Compact Size – 6x6 mm

Diagnostic Capability

Reduction of stress upon retina

D ISADVANTAGES

Costly

If a single part of the chip is damaged the total technique will be meaningless.

Researchers throughout the wor ld have looked for ways to improve people 's l i ves wi th art ifi c ia l , b ion ic dev ices .

Bionic dev ices are be ing deve loped to do more than rep lace defect ive parts .

Researchers are a lso us ing them to fi ght i l lnesses .

Prov id ing power to run b ionic implants and making connect ions to the bra in 's contro l system pose the two great cha l lenges for b iomedica l engineer ing.

Sc ient ist are now look ing at dev ices l ike b ion ic arms, tongues, noses etc .
