METEOR®

COMPACT, ADVANCED, ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY BIOLOGICAL ACTIVE FILTERBIOFOR® combines biological treatment with solids filtration in a high-efficiency, high-rate system. BIOFOR®’S compact footprint and simple operation make it an excellent solution for new or existing plants where real estate is at a premium. BIOFOR® can be applied individually or in separate stages for greater flexibility.

Modularity with multiple treatment cells reduce energy costs and enable easy upgrades. On-duty cells can operate at optimum filtration rates while off-duty cells are in a backwash cycle or idle mode. Simply add more cells to increase capacity and upgrade capability.

BIOFOR® SAVES TIME, SPACE, AND MONEYBIOLITE™ media serves as both biological support and filter, eliminating the need for final clarification.

Co-current air and water upflow yields significantly higher loading capacity, with increasing efficiency as filtration rates rise.

EFFECTIVE IFAS/MBBR SOLUTIONS FOR NUTRIENT UPGRADESThe METEOR® IFAS/MBBR process is designed to offer flexible solutions to a multitude of biological process upgrade applications such as nitrogen removal, capacity increase and wastewater reuse. An upgrade often consists of simply adding the biofilm media and screens to existing basins and can therefore be completed in a cost-effective and timely manner without major civil engineering requirements and no need for additional land.

Based on proprietary biofilm carriers, the METEOR® technology provides a large internal surface area for the growth of micro-organisms. Our biofilm carriers offer the ability to utilize a larger screen mesh size, minimizing head-loss across the screen and the tendency to foul. The combination of large aperture area, high specific biomass, and UV resistance makes METEOR® well suited for IFAS/MBBR applications.

The HYBACS* (Hybrid Activated-Sludge Technology) process is well-suited for municipal and industrial WWTPs looking for an economical technology for capacity upgrades and nutrient removal.

The HYBACS is a two-stage design featuring: 1) SMART™ Unit 2) Activated Sludge Process

SMART™ Units are a type of biological reactor where plates are fixed to a rotating structure. The plates are manufactured from a 95% porous mesh that creates an ideal environment for biological growth.

Aerobic, anoxic, and anaerobic regions all exist within the reactor during operation. This dynamic environment allows for high treatment capacity.

Aeration from RotationAs the mesh plates rotate, both water containing pollutants and air, move in and out of the plates through convection and diffusion.

Optimized Aeration TanksBecause of the highly efficient SMART™ units, the aeration tanks downstream can be reduced by 40% compared to traditional activated sludge systems.

DEAMMONIFICATION OF HIGH AMMONIA CONCENTRATION WATERS USING ANAMMOX PATHWAYCLEARGREEN™ (for Cyclic Low Energy Ammonium Removal) deammonification allows the treatment of concentrated ammonia in the side stream of the plant, limiting the impact on the main water treatment line.

CLEARGREEN™ utilizes a cyclical reactor that allows for successive completion of all treatment phases in the same tank.

The CLEARGREEN™ process makes use of anammox in conjunction with ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB).

Performance

Botleng’s nutrient removal plant treats municipal wastewater with Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), ammonia and Total Phosphorus (TP) concentrations of around 600mg/l, 45 mg/l and 6 mg/l respectively.

Sampling from the new HYBACS® plant indicates that it is performing well within the stringent discharge standards required, and that the treated effuent is of a very high quality:

• COD is less than 30mg/l

• Ammonia concentration is less than 1 mg/l

• Nitrate concentration is less than 4mg/l

• TP removal currently exceeds 90%.

Moedi, the municipality’s consulting engineers, reported: “We are very impressed with the treatment performance shown so

far by HYBACS at the Botleng plant. As the town of Delmas grows we believe that HYBACS will continue

to present an ideal solution.”

Conclusion

The first phase of Bluewater Bio’s HYBACS® upgrade at Botleng was commissioned in 2011 and produced a very high quality effluent. In August 2012, the Botleng plant was severely damaged during a riot. Bluewater Bio is working with Headstream and the Municipality to rebuild it, and also to upgrade another plant in the town of Delmas.

The success at Botleng helped to secure a further South African HYBACS® order at Swartruggens, a town about 170 km North West of Johannesburg, which is was commissioned in April 2012.
