The BIOPATH sub - project will perform a full lifecycle assessment (FLA) in the specific ambitious field of biomass resources and all the value chain related to their use for energy generation / conversion. BIOPATH will be related on to:
• different solid biofuels • different processes • assessment on energy storage, on environmental impact, on market profile BIOPATH aims to:
• realise a platform of traceability and monitoring of the different solid biofuels • define a value on the different characteristics (energy, environment, market)

- Surface: 6206 Km2
- Population: 520.000
- 55% of its territory covered by forests, mainly tall trees
- 76% of forests and woods property of public authorities
- Volumetric density of woods has increased from 148 m3/ha (‘50) to 201 m3/ha (1999)
- 133 enterprises connected to forestry resources and 309 employee (2006)
- Productivity: 6,7 m3/day/employee
- Overall biomass production: 322.834 q, of which 85% comes form the forestry, 7% from agriculture, 8% from cleaning of riverbeds

The Biomass Value Chain in the Province of Trento
In general the whole chain is not
very active and dynamic since the
first start of the same. This is due to
the consideration that the energy
use is not particularly profitable and
it may serve only in case of special
contractual conditions between
stakeholders.
This will be an important element
considering the development of a
certification and traceability system
for biomass.

Conclusions. 1
The local biomass chain in the Province of Trento may have
an added value when the whole chain is short and the use of
biomass in application requiring added values

What now?
1. Realize first steps in proposing a
certification method to the biomass whole
chain stakeholders
2. Measure the quality of the fuel in form of
certified pellet
3. Try to boost the sector of wood chip
increasing the quality of the fuel and of
the preparation methods
