Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is energy derived from resources that are regenerative or for all practical purposes cannot be depleted

For this reason, renewable energy sources are fundamentally different from fossil fuels, and do not produce as many greenhouse gases and other pollutants as fossil fuel combustion. Mankind's traditional uses of wind, water, and solar energy are widespread in developed and developing countries; but the mass production of electricity using renewable energy sources has become more commonplace recently, reflecting the major threats of climate change due to pollution, exhaustion of fossil fuels, and the environmental, social and political risks of fossil fuels and nuclear power.

The increasing political focus on sustainability and climate protection leads to high development of renewable energies.

Pöyry is involved in all areas of the renewable energy sector with considerable focus being placed on the bio-energy area.

Bio-energy Growth DriversBioenergy will be an important part of the drive towards renewable energy

uptake. There will be a large global biofuel market which will grow rapidly to 2020 and beyond.

There are 3 main drivers to this growth:

• Security of fossil fuel supply• Combating climate change• Rural development

This growth will requires a vast amount of investment in bio-energy and bio-fuel plants globally.

This offers a unique opportunity companies in all parts of the value chain:– Plantation developers– Bio-energy and bio-fuel producers– Equipment manufacturers– End users etc
