i. Optimized search engine featuring “reminder”, alerting users of biodiversity

issues

As the world's largest Chinese search engine, Baidu is an Internet tycoon in China and

throughout the world. It provides the most important entry for users to access data,

therefore is obligated to guide public opinions when disseminating information. In

recent years, Baidu has been concerned about protecting endangered species and

conserving biological diversity, and hence constantly optimizing search result for

keywords, in order to provide positive exposure to users in great number and create

righteous social values contributing to Ecological Civilization in China.

Baidu search engine is capable of forecasting intensions behind search behaviors of

users based on its amassed mega data over decades, and providing corresponding

warning or reminder. For example, when users’ inputs into Baidu search engine contain

key words such as "ivory", "tiger bone" and other relevant wording pertinent to

endangered species or products, there will be a reminder automatically appearing,

alerting users of biodiversity conservation and shunning from illegal sales. A hyperlink

that bounds to dedicated webpages promoting biodiversity related information and

knowledge is also included in the reminder.

The feature of remainder is now functioning on both computer and mobile phone, as

shown by the pictures below.

ii. Launch several interlinked internet products

Free of charge, Baidu has ratified scores of environmental NGOs, featuring optimized

key wording for search engine and bringing internet users closer to these organizations

which include SEE, China Mangrove Conservation Union, southwest mountain, green

river, wilderness Xinjiang, etc. In this way, users can access quick and accurate

information of environmental protection and biodiversity conservation, and get

involved in public welfare activities organized by these NGOs.

1. Baidu Input Method improved

Baidu has improved its Input Method which allows typewriters to see the logo of

environmental NGOs directly on the Input bar, moreover, it is clickable to bound to the

official website of the NGO.

2. Augmented Reality(AR) technology applied

Augmented Reality(AR) is an innovative technology that Baidu applies to create a

“wonder zoo” on mobile phone which allows children to make friends with

animals without going outdoors, there have been over 30 species of animals

including woodpecker, dragonflies, fireflies, butterflies, dinosaurs and rhinoceros, etc.

A campaign has been rolled out for parents to bring along their children to enjoy the

interactive experience.

The AR feature supports “voice input” and typewriting too, which is convenient for

phone users.

iii. Fight illegal trade of wild animals products

Determined to safeguard biodiversity and especially those endanger animals, Baidu

pays consistent attention to oversee those harmful information pertinent to illegal trade

of wild animals products at post bars (in China known as “Tie Ba”贴吧) where internet

users are free to exchange information. As a result since the campaign started,

155 thousand pieces of posts illuminated, 22 post bars have been shut down and 41

users have been closed permanently.

iv. Online Public Welfare Platform

Baidu also provides a strong network platform to support environmental nonprofit

organizations and NGOs including those dedicated to biodiversity conservation. In this

way, concepts and messages are conveyed to millions of internet users through the

Public Welfare Platform online which now also working for mobile phones.

v. Internal training

Baidu has invited experts from relevant fields to conduct internal trainings on

biodiversity conservation reaching out to nearly 1000 staff members across the

company group.
