BIODEGRADABLE SUPER ABSORBENT POLYMER

TRANSCRIPT

Page 1: BIODEGRADABLE SUPER ABSORBENT POLYMER

Super absorbent polymers, are very high molecular mass cross linked poly electrolytes that can be absorb or imbibe more than 1000 times their mass of water or aqueous solutions.

In order to absorb this large quantity of aqueous fluid, the polymer must be slightly cross linked so that the polymer chain can adapt widely spaced configuration.

The polymer backbone in SAP is hydrophilic i.e. ‘water loving’ because it contains water loving carboxylic acid groups (–COOH). When water is added to SAP there is a polymer/solvent interaction; hydration and the formation of hydrogen bonds are two of these interactions.

CONCLUSIONCONCLUSION

Biodegradation mechanism

SAPs can absorb water up to several 1000 times of its own weight and keep this water under pressure.Because of these unique properties, SAPs have many novel potential applications in various areas. The products biologically degraded, which shows their good biodegradability.
