of ATP without oxygen.
Recap: Cellular Respiration • Our body’s cells rely on ATP for energy • ATP is primarily synthesized during cellular respiration

Recall • Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm BEFORE cellular
respiration • Since it is anaerobic, it can still occur without oxygen! • Glycolysis STILL occurs before fermentation

Two Types of Fermentation: Lactic Acid Fermentation Alcoholic Fermentation
• Lactic acid fermentation = occurs in animal cells, including our muscle cells – Restarts glycolysis by recycling NADH – Produces lactic acid
• When lactic acid builds up, it can cause muscles to fatigue and burn

• Alcoholic Fermentation = Occurs in yeast cells and some bacteria – Restarts glycolysis by recycling NADH – Produces CO2 & ethyl alcohol
• CO2 release causes bread dough to rise

Tennis Ball Activity • Groups of 3-4 • Assign group roles • Have a timer out • Make sure to count accurately
Tennis Ball Activity • First, test out squeezing the ball " make
sure your group member is fully squeezing. It should be visibly dented.
Tennis Ball Activity • Next, prepare the timer. The timer must
call time every 10 seconds for two whole minutes (no breaks)
Tennis Ball Activity • Once time begins, the counter must
count how many times the tennis ball squeezer SUCCESSFULLY squeezes the tennis ball every ten seconds (not total).
Tennis Ball Activity 1. Timer – every 10 sec for 2 minutes 2. Squeezer – must cause indentation 3. Counter – total every 10 seconds 4. Write numbers in data table
