Reviews Britta Wandaogo (excerpts) Without my fourth child documentary film by Britta Wandaogo, Germany 2010 PRIX Europa 2010
The story of Andy, 24 years old, toothless and meagre, who tries with all his might to care for his three remaining
children after the fourth child ended up with foster parents. The filmmaker follows Andy closely, shows his attempts
to bring order into the chaos of his family, his desperate optimism, his thoughts and feelings, his only partially
successful action to keep the authorities at bay and prove that he is a good father who can care for his children.
Hermine Albers Media Award 2010 Genre Film excerpt from the laudation of the chairwoman of the jury Ulrike Werthmanns-Reppekus:
The Film "without my fourth child" makes it perceptible, how close the will to exist, braveness and helplessness lies
together. Distanced from social stereotypes, we witness the realisation of how close to the edge of a social abyss
you can be in Germany as a family. The film leaves space for Andys thoughts and words, while neither idealizing or
stigmatizing him. The films achievement is, that it clears prejudice against family, whose children have been taken
away by the youth welfare office. The way this film showed the lives of these families got under our skin.
The authenticity makes it impossible for the viewer to take a distance and it points out, that the decisions
considering the well being of a child are a complex matter.
1200 brutto documentary film by Britta Wandaogo, Germany 2008 Kölner Medienpreis in the category camera Britta Wandaogo (Author, Director and Camera) is awarded for the "Kölner Filmpreis" 2008, in the category camera.
"1200 brutto " is a film that impresses especially through its compelling Camera Work. Though it may seem strange,
the remarkable aspect of Brittas’ camerawork is the inconspicuousness of her pictures. Especially in the most
private places in his life, the camera seems to create no distance between the subject and the viewer. It feels like
the protagonists forget about the presence of the camera. In this way, the viewer experiences, how close the will to
survive, helplessness and love lie together in this family. A story about five, almost six human beings as close as it
gets, says the jury. A film that matches the reputation of the television series: “Menschen Hautnah”.

Blicke aus dem Ruhrgebiet 2009 A young man stands in the dust, for 1200 Euro gross. Life has to go on - as does the excessive demands.
The film we award brings us close to a 21 year old man who in order to feed his family started working at the age of
fourteen. He currently earns 1200 Euro gross. Through the respectful work of filmmaker Britta Wandaogo, Andy
was approached very sensitively to the jury. At first glance, Andy was introduced as the stereotype of an
uneducated, lower class citizen. In times, where the word "do-gooder" almost sounds like an insult, Britta shows a
caring father who managed to create a farsightedness for the present without having a proper education or a social
foundation. www.blicke.org
The Crocodiles of the Wandaogo Family documentary film by Britta Wandaogo, Germany, Burkina Faso 2003
Deutscher Kurzfilmpreis 2003 | German Short Film Award
Nominated for the German Camera Award 2004 in the category editing
FBW grade: Valuable
1st Prize - Borderlands International Film Festival, Bolzano 2003 Excerpt from the jury’s statement: With personal experiences in an European-African mixed marriage, this documentary feature tells the story of the
clash of different cultures. German director Britta Wandaogo and her husband Salif from Burkina Faso fearlessly
confront the lens of an always present - yet never obtrusive camera, even in the most delicate and intimate
moments of their relationship. Their daughter, Kaddi, moves astonishingly effortlessly between the two mentalities,
treating the camera with the same casualness she treats the crocodiles.
Love black white Documentary film by Britta Wandaogo, Germany 2001
CIVIS Media Award 2001 ‚Information’ category
Living in cultural variety – against racism and exclusion Excerpt from the jury’s statement: (...) The feature combines cheerfulness, melancholy, passion, love and politics without ever getting didactic. There
is no commentary, the protagonists tell their everyday stories - heir happiness, anger, passion and frustration are
contagious for the audience. Yet, the director never loses the distance to her story and so succeeds in taking the
audience with her. “Love black and white“ is not a story about cultural differences, but about people, whose
different origins enrich their lives: in terms of experiences, emotions, and of course in terms of problems. Simply
what cultural variety is about! (...)
“I think that the approach of different cultures toward each other can only be assured if this topic is no longer
imposed with a special status. So it was important for me to focus on a completely “normal” juvenile life with its
entire range of emotions and conflicts.“ britta wandaogo
and German Social Award 2002 category TV
Statement by Jürgen Gohde, president of the German Federal Association for Free Welfare Work:
This year’s media award in the “TV“ category is being presented to Mrs. Britta Wandaogo for her television feature
“Love black and white“. The director successfully has the protagonists talking in their own words, putting no
commentary on the original soundtrack. By doing so, she manages to give very private and intimate views on the
couples’ everyday lives. The masterful combination of everyday situations, intense interviews and the protagonists’
humour, shows funny moments despite all the problems - grounded on the main characters’ energy and self-
esteem. Britta Wandaogo has managed to playfully translate a multi-layered mixture of cultural differences, social
background, political acceptance - and in the end love and tolerance - into a feature film.
The jury would like to give special praise to the masterful camerawork. The camera is part of the action,
catches hold of seemingly unimportant events – and thereby emphasises the authenticity and modernity of the
feature. The sensitive style of the report avoids clichés and voyeurism. The feeling that these protagonists are
being put on display is not given at any point. It is this balance between emotion and objectivity that touches the
audience. An exceptional and brave film.
Bilfou biga Documentary film by Britta Wandaogo, Germany, Burkina Faso, Benin 1998
Spiridon-Neven-DuMont-Award
Nominated for the best Graduate Film by the HFF Konrad Wolf
Press release text of Art Club Cologne [Kölnischer Kunstverein]:
Cologne-based filmmaker Britta Wandaogo having recently been honoured with the Spiridon-Neven-DuMont-
Award, shows inter alia her award-winning film essay "Bilfou Biga, “A little bit of child" (1998). The film focuses on
Kaddi, Wandaogo’s daughter, growing up in two cultures, German and African. Over and above this, the filmmaker
confronts the couple’s simple-minded entanglements. “Not a multicultural sauce, but a family between worlds.
Rootless is each in a different way. All together, and each for himself on a rootless search.” – this is how Wandaogo
describes her film. Documentarism reaches a new level in the work of Britta Wandaogo. This also applies to her first
film "Den Affen töten" (1994), where she has different drug addicts talk about their everyday lives, their longing,
their drug experiences and their expectations for the future. The sensitivity of the direction and the artistic editing
give evidence of the filmmaker’s intensive understanding of the protagonists’ life situation. The interviews never feel
rushed, leaving the people enough time to talk, but in the same moment, every single frame seems to drive the
narrative forward.
First Look Documentary film by Britta Wandaogo 1997
Filmpreis NRW | Film Award NRW
Excerpt from the laudation | Bundesministerium NRW:
"With her films, Britta Wandaogo transports a personal motivation: She wants to offer the audience a direct view on
the every day life of an addict that has not been compromised through morality. (...) For one month, she follows a
drug addict couple through detox. The camera is always close, at the dinner table, in the bathtub, by the bed.
Britta Wandaogo reaches out for the direct contact and avoids the voyeuristic view. She takes people serious. The
life in front of the camera is not scripted - love, hopelessness and collapse happen. (...) The director uses the
montage in an astonishing way to portrait feelings, progression and vital rituals at an almost tactile level. She
manages to keep the suspense high throughout the film. Her intuitive contact, the headstrong video aesthetic and
the smoothness of her storytelling leave the viewer with a consistent impression."
Den Affen töten Documentary film by Britta Wandaogo, 1994
Encourage Award - Videofilmtage Thüringen & Rheinland Pfalz
1. Prize and Audience Award at Blicke aus dem Ruhrgebiet 1. Prize at Videofest Bochum
Jury statement: A documentary with no distance - as close as it gets - but never voyeuristic. The dignity is kept.
A film about the so called "involved" that involves us all because it could happen to all of us. "Never say never!"
The term "authenticity" is effected positively by this work, far from a sensation seeking process. The viewer is asked
to think about the term "solicitousness" Filmregisseurinnen NRW unterwegs Press release: Britta Wandaogo manages to be with the junkies as if she
were one of them, almost like no one else. That is nearly impossible, considering that the camera is always there,
as if its grown into the skin. Such closeness is breathtaking, what a process in editing and the order of the material.
