transport:

diffusion

and osmosis

A. Diffusion of Molecules through a selective

permeable membrane

Colloidion, rubber band, 15% glucose solution, starch

solution, I2 KI solution, Benedicts reagent, Pan with

distilled water, 500 ml beaker 1/3 filled with water,

test tube holder, 3 standard test tubes, pipette, 2 –

400 –ml beakers to hold dialysis bag, electric stove,

dialysis bag

B. Osmotic Activity in Animal Cells

4-clean microscope slides and cover slips, marking

pen, dropper bottle with three solutions of unknown

osmolarity, blood lancet, cotton and alcohol

C. Osmotic Activity in Plant cells

Microscope, 2-clean microscope slides and cover

slips, dropper bottle of tap water, dropper bottle of

distilled water, dropper bottle of 1.0 M sucrose

solution, Rhoeo discolor leaf, scalpel or cutter and

forceps

6 DNA

Extraction

Graduated cylinder, beakers 100 ml and 2-250 ml ( of

the same kind), liquid dishwashing detergent ( clear

solution works better than cloudy), ½ of a banana,

knife, mortar and pestle, salt, coffee filter, rubber

band, test tube, COLD 95% ethanol ( can’t be

substitute), wooden splint, refrigerator

TYPING

Anti serum A and B, Glass slides, tooth picks, blood

lancet, tissue paper, cotton, alcohol

8 LIVING

THINGS IN

POND

WATER

Stock cultures of sewage/ pond water, clearly

marked:

Culture 1 – collected from the surface or form open

water with plants

Culture 2 – collected from edges of the sewage/pond

with floating materials

Culture 3 – collected from the bottom of the pond

with twigs and decaying materials

Glass marking pencil, 3 pipettes, tissue paper, slides,

cover slips, microscope

9 Bacterial

growth

Nutrient agar filled petri dish, wax pencil, cotton

swab, filter paper, hole punch, forceps, 3 disinfectant

solution (alcogel), distilled water, tape, bleach ( for

cleaning)

10 Molds

growth

A clear container with lid. ( Big glass jars and clean

plastic containers work great, but you’ll have to

throw away the containers when you’re through),

adhesive tape, water, some left-over food such as

bread, fruit ( like oranges, lemons or grapes),

vegetables ( like broccoli, eggplant, or green pepper),

cheese and cookies or cake

OCTOBER 3,4 AND 5 PRACTICAL EXAMINATION
