    Introduction00

I want to personally thank you fordownloading this eBook. If you have takenthe time to sign-up and download this eBookthen you already have the drive it takesto break the BIM-barriers down. We needmore people like you to think outside ofthe box and push our software-of-choice toits limits.

This eBook is not meant to be a technicalmanual but more of a mini-guide. Ivetaken my design process and broke it downin the simplest, systematic way I could. When I released BIM After Dark - Volume 1 the feedback was incredible. Customers whopurchased the video series asked if I could

break down my design process in an easy-to-follow guide. Well, here it is!

Design is extremely subjective. Therefore, you do not have to agree with or like mydesign aesthetic to get a feel for myprocess. This process will work regardlessof what building type, design aesthetic, orism you prefer.

    Enjoy the eBook!

    Concept01Program / Diagram

Many people nd it very hard to believethat I, The Revit Kid, still start withpencil and trace. Well, I do!

Obviously, I embrace technology and believein it. But even a technology geek likemyself cannot deny the free hand sketch ona nice piece of trace paper or Moleskinenotebook.

When looking back and trying to rationalizemy process for this eBook I always startwith freehand par-ti style diagrams.Sometimes these diagrams are in a planview, other times they are in an elevationor section view. No matter what the view,

the nal version of this diagram becomesthe driver of the entire building. I like

to keep this diagram on my desk throughoutthe entire process as a reminder of where Istarted. Of course, designs get re ned overtime and some stuff will change.

The diagram above is for the example projectI will be using in this eBook. It is a 450bed hospital. The entrance loops around are ection pool while one of the two patientbed wings reaches out to meet the pool. The patient wings face each other to shieldthe glazing from the sun (it is a very hotclimate).

If you are interested in learning how Imake my hand sketches look like the colored

sketch on the far right, check outBIM After Dark - Volume 1 (Video 1, 00:00:11).

    The Arsenal

It might just be me, but I love seeingwhat kind of pens/pencils people use tosketch. I guess it is similar to how Ipurchased a Fender Stratocaster when Iwas younger because Jimi Hendrix usedit... Maybe not?

Above, you will nd my current arsenal.I typically do all of my sketching ontrace paper and I nd the pens listedabove to work great on trace. The Uniballhas a slight bleed to it which can makefor some awesome line extensions to yoursketches. I also enjoy a good mechanicalpencil (remember, this is free hand, not

drafting). Give them all a try! Let meknow what you think!

Massing02Sculpting the FormIn my process, I constantly go back and forth between

Revit and hand sketching. Once I have a diagram Iam happy with I jump into Revit for the rst time.Typically, I will mass out something somewhat to scalein order to get a sense of the building 3-dimensionally.Basically, this is the virtual version of a physical

sketch model. You can see in the images to the right that this modelis very crude. In fact, unless I truly need to, I donot use Revits conceptual massing. I prefer to usemodel-in-place extrusions. I will then print viewssimilar to the ones shown here. Once printed, I willlay a piece of trace over them and sketch continueddetail and development.

I go through this process (sketching, adding a bit tothe model, repeat) a few times re ning my design. Thesketch model gets a bit more detail because of this, refer to the top right image.

Note: BIM After Dark - Volume 3 (Spring 2015) covers how I makevirtual sketch models (similar to the ones on this page).

    Massing Studies

    Option B: Equal Wings

    Option A: Large Tower

One of the great things about using Revit so early inthe process and creating simple forms is the abilityto study different options. I will use Design Optionswithin Revit and place each iteration of the form inthe option. Now, each of my set views can ip betweenthe different options.

For this building, I was trying to decide if I wantedto place more of the program in one tower element

(Option A) or distribute the program between to twowings (Option B). Similar to a physical sketch model.

    Development03

As I mentioned in Section 02, I constantlywork between Revit and hand sketching. Oneof the techniques I have used during thisprocess is what I call the sketch-overtechnique. For this technique, I simplyprint out my sketch model (01 & 02 above)and lay a piece of trace over it. I thenhand sketch details and further develop theproject (before modelling them in Revit).

Finally, I scan the trace sketch and overlapthe two images in Photoshop. Now, I cancolor the image in photoshop if desiredwhile utilizing the shading and model from

Revit (similar to image 03 above and theimages on the next page).

    Skinning the Form

If my design and presentation is primarilybeing used for exterior images (at thisstage) then the original sketch modeldoes not have to go to waste.

I continue developing my building bywrapping the sketch model with real Revitwalls, doors, windows, and curtainwalls(image 04 above). The sketch model canthen be used as the core element for yourpresentations.

For an in-depth video of what the coreelement is and how POWERFUL it can be

    Presentation04Export / Render

Materials / Lighting / Views / Render Now that the design has been developed between Revitand hand-sketching and the sketch model has beenwrapped with a Revit element skin it is time to startproducing images. After all, what good is a design ifyou cannot present your concept and sell it?

The images shown above are my hand notes and drawings

specifying what materials I plan on using for thisproject. I plan it out on paper before entering Revit.

Once materials are applied, I will set up my views (ifI have not done so already), add lights (if required),and render. Choosing materials, tweaking with views, and getting the lighting correct will usually take afair amount of time. Plan accordingly.

For in-depth videos on creating custom materials,

    exporting views, and rendering, check out:BIM After Dark - Volume 1 (Videos 2, 3, & 4)

Post-ProcessingFinally, my images are rendered. The

nal step is to make them sexy.

Post-processing renderings and imagesis a must. When used correctly, Revitcan create very nice renderings. But they must be post-processed toextract the details, enhance thelighting, and really impress clients.

The images on your left illustratenative Revit renderings (before) andthe nal images I post-processed inPhotoshop (after). I, perhaps likeyou, used to Render an image andcall it nished. When I learnedthe techniques to create the imagesshown here it completely changed myopinion on Revit as a rendering tool.

ones on this page check out:BIM After Dark - Volume 1 (Video 4)

Conclusion05I hope youve enjoyed a sneak peak into myprocess. It was an interesting experiencestepping back and analysing my process (aprocess I normally dont think about). This eBook should serve as a guide to getyou using Revit early on in the designprocess.

Dont forget to check out BIM After Dark - Volume 1 to ll in any of the gaps or ifyou are interested in creating images thatlook similar to the ones in this eBook.
