Dear Orienteering Friends,

We are pleased to welcome competitors, clubs and guests to the 10th Memorial of the 7th

Brigade „PUMA“. The event will take place in Varaždin and Varaždiske Toplice as the host cities,

and will be hosted by the Association of veterans of the 7th Guards Brigade "PUMA" and

Orienteering Club Međimurje. The Memorial of the 7th Guards Brigade will be held in Varaždin

County which is located in the north part of the Croatia, 90 km north of Zagreb. Competition is the

official public Pre-WTOC TrailO competition and also the 5th and 6th Event of the European Cup

in Trail Orienteering - ECTO2015

Competition is a part of our “Orienteering Triangle“ event.

1. Varaždin County

Varaždin County is famous for its Baroque splendour, its music and art, and its unspoilt wild-life and unique scenery. In the region between the River Drava and the forested slopes of Ravna Gora, Kalnik and Ivanšćica, the highest Zagorje mountain, lies a wealth of Croatia's historic and cultural heritage.

The Varaždin area boasts so many tourist spots that it is one of the most attractive destinations in Croatia. The region has been inhabited from time immemorial, testified

by the world-famous Vindija cave, which contains the first traces of prehistoric man in Europe.

There are countless churches throughout the region, from the small one in Lepoglava's Purga, decorated with Ranger's frescoes, to Varaždin's splendid Baroque cathedral, numerous manors, such as Maruševec, wonderful ornamental parks, like the Opeka

Arboretum, and many castles (Batthyany in Ludbreg, and the Old Castle of Varaždin, for instance).

One of the most magnificent places to see, medieval Trakošćan, is the pearl of Hrvatsko (Croatian) Zagorje, situated on a hill and surrounded by a forest-park and a lake, where

a nature-trail provides peace and relaxation. An exhibition inside the castle documents the history of the area. In the past, people have built many settlements on the friendly edges of the Pannonian

Plain where picturesque hills begin to rise. The largest and best-preserved of these, Varaždin, was once the Croatian capital, the seat of the Ban and the Croatian

Parliament, and is now the economic and cultural centre of the country. Also famous is Varaždinske Toplice, Croatia's oldest thermal spa, which attracted the cream of

European society for centuries and is still a famous watering-place and recreation-centre today. Varaždin itself, 800 years old, has one of the best-preserved medieval town-centres in

Europe: a heritage proudly displayed in the city’s many museums and galleries. Even the cemetery is famous for its horticulture! Visitors can enjoy a whole array of events, such

as the Splendid Ball; the 'Špancirfest' (Street Walkers' Festival); the festival Evenings of Baroque Music; the New Year's Eve race (starting exactly at midnight on December 31st)

and many others.

It will be possible to take part in both TrailO/TempO and FootO competitions (start times may be adjusted upon request).

5. Event Centre and Accommodation

During Competition we will provide official accommodation in Varaždinske Toplice in sport hall/school (on hard floor), parking place for camper vans and camping place for tents. Informations about booking and fees will be published on the competition web page. Competitors should bring their own sleeping bags/mats. Hotel Minerva, Varaždinske Toplice (as a part of the Hospital for Medicinal Rehabilitation, Varaždinske Toplice should be suited for paralimpic competitors; any inquiries or requests can be checked with Hotel management) For other accommodation (private accomodaton/apartments or other) near competition area, you may check: Varaždin County Tourist Bord : http://turizam-vzz.hr/hr Varaždin Tourist Bord: http://www.tourism-varazdin.hr/ Varaždinske Toplice Tourist Bord: http://toplice-vz.hr/ The Event Centre will be open in finish areas 2 hours before the first start. 6. Classes FootO: MW21, MW12, MW16, MW20, MW35, M50, OPEN TrailO: E OPEN, E PARA, E JUNIOR, A, N

Only E class is counted for ECTO For TempO there is only E class course for all classes.

In case of too few entries, organizer reserves the right to merge the classes!

7. Terrain FootO 1, TrailO 1 stages: City streets and parks, the old city ramparts, urban area, good visibility FootO 2, TrailO 2 stages: Varied terrain with rich contour details, holes and depresions. Forest is with good runability. The terrain has a dense road and path network. Medium hilly area, partly open. Unpaved road with minor elevation for TrailO stage FootO 3, TrailO 3 stages: City streets and parks, spa. Combination of urban, park and forest area; mostly unpaved road and paths, partly asphalt road; a stretch of uphill path present. Medium hilly for runners.

8. Control punching system

The control posts are equipped with SportIdent electronic punching sytem and old types of punchers. Location of controls will be marked with small pieces of paper. On TrailO stages punchers will be avalible on decision points. You should put your SI number in online entry form.

The Best all-round competitor will recive Orienteering Triangle Cup and special prize.

The best Club will recive Memorial of the 7.gbr „PUMA“ Cup and a special prize.

12. Travel / Arrival

Closest airport is in Zagreb (Pleso)

Arriving by car:

Varaždin, Lužec and Varaždinske Toplice are about 1 hour drive by car from Zagreb.

From Zagreb use highway A4 Zagreb -Goričan ( http://hac-onc.hr/en ).

For Varaždin go to exit Varaždin and follow the road signs for center. There is a public

garage available near the event center.

For Lužec, go to exit Novi Marof and follow signs for Varaždin. In Presečno follow sign posts

to competition area.

For Varaždinske Toplice, go to exit Varaždinske Toplice and follow road signs for center and

then for Hotel Minerva.

Public transport is not advised since only Varaždin is easily reachable by bus/train.

There are buses connecting Varaždin and Varaždinske Toplice on working days (very rare/if

at all on weekends/public holidays)

Lužec event location is a picnic area about 3 km from Zagreb-Varaždin main road (NOT

highway) and is not conected by public transport.

NOTE:

At Lužec, competition area will be several kilometres away from the event center. Organised

transport will be available. Competitors who may find organised transport unsuitable should

contact the organisers because parking space near the competition area will be limited.

If there is enough interest, official transport for the WTOC2015 participants from Zagreb

to Varaždinske Toplice may be available (going to Varazdinske Toplice on Saturday and

returning to Zagreb on Monday). Contact organizers for details and check the

competition website.
