• 70 years old, born in Sherman, Texas and raised in Dallas, Texas.

• Currently working as President and chief executive officer, North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee.

EDUCATION– Got his Bachelor’s degree in music from SMU.– Got his Master’s degree in education from University of

North Texas.

Career Path • His 1st job was stock boy at M.E. Moses (a five and dime in

Dallas).• A junior high/high school band director for 7 years at

Seagoville High School, Bryan Adams High School, Sunset High School and W.E. Greiner Junior High School.

• Was hired as the associate director of the Mustang Band at SMU.

• Worked as director of bands, associate dean of the Meadows School of the Arts eventually vice president of development.

• Was the President and CEO of Dallas Center of the Performing Arts (raised $338 billion to build AT&T Performing Arts Center).

• Currently works as President and chief executive officer of the North Texas Super Bowl XLV (45) Host Committee.

President/CEO of North Texas Super Bowl XLV (45) Host Committee HOW HE GOT THERE– Had a relationship established with the Cowboys

from working with Tom Landry. – When Jerry Jones bought the team, he developed

concepts for entertainment as the executive director of entertainment.

WHAT IS IT?– Heads a team that prepared the North Texas

region who hosted the 2011 Super Bowl. – Raised over $25 million to ensure success of the

Super Bowl.

Advice • His mom told him when he was 4 years old, "Son,

you have every reason to be humble.”

with smart, good people. My career in nonprofit work has relied on philanthropic support.”

Don “Slip” Maloney

• Born on September 5, 1958 in Lindsay, Ontario.

• General Manager of the Arizona Coyotes.

• NHL Career (1978-1991) – Drafted by the NY Rangers (26th overall), played 11 seasons from

1978 to 1988.– Traded to the Hartford Whalers in 1988 and played 1 season.– Also played for the NY Islanders from 1989 to 1991.

• General Manager for the NY Islanders from 1992 to 1995.• Served as the NY Rangers’ vice president of player

personnel and was also assistant GM to Glen Sather from 1996 to 2007.– Ranked #26 on Rangers all-time list in the book 100 Rangers

Greats.• May 28, 2007 named GM of the Phoenix Coyotes.

– June 2, 2010 named NHL GM of the Year.

Maloney’s Choice in Career

• Being Canadian he grew up with a passion for hockey.

• His family had a love for the sport, including his brother, Dave, who he played in the NHL with.

• Played in the NHL for 15 years with various teams.

Maloney’s Job

• His most difficult job is producing a competitive hockey club every year with the low amount of funds.– Also not knowing if his team is going to be relocated to

another city for many years.• His average day entails:– Being on the phone with other GMs about deals, the salary

cap, negotiating contracts, etc.– Scouting talent from around the world.– Meetings with the coaching staff, owners and other

members of the organization. – Going to games at home and sometimes on the road.– Being apart of press conferences/dealing with the media.

Travel/Hours• When the sport is in season, you'll work long

hours that may include nights and weekends.• During the off-season, much of your time will

be spent completing negotiations and making preparations.

• As a sports manager, you'll generally work from an office, though some managers travel to away games with their clients.
