Provide the backbone for improved cycle routes throughout Newcastle;
• routes will go where they are most needed• link up residential areas with the city centre via key corridors
– leisure– schools– universities– local shops– major employers
• target under-represented groups• comprehensively signed and well understood• improve health and help promote active travel• reduce congestion and carbon emissions on key corridors• increase economic growth and sustain existing retail centres• help make Newcastle a more pleasant place in which to live and work
The Seven Strategic Cycle Routes will:
• be comfortable to the user: minimising effort and respecting topography
• be direct and coherent, giving clarity throughout the route and fully integrate with neighbourhood routes
• be attractive enough to get people to 'dust down their bikes' and not just appeal to the 'experienced' cyclist
• feel intrinsically safe to the user: away from fast traffic and avoid conflict by giving cyclists greater priority
• conveniently link key centres of employment, retail, culture and education so that people have a reason to use them
