The Challenge
Bilfinger Salamis UK were asked to come up with a solution for replacing compromised bulkhead penetrations. The bulkhead penetrations needed to be wind and water tight, as well as satisfying HSEQ minimum standards for fire rated bulkheads. Operations could not provide forecasts for future use, so the bulkhead had to be able to cope with various sizes of cables and pipes.
The Solution
It was agreed with the client that Bilfinger Salamis should proceed with the manufacture, supply and installation of a set of bespoke bulkhead penetration assemblies.
The bespoke items comprised of the following:
• Agalvanisedplatetoretainfireinsulationatthecompromisedbulkhead.
• Abulkheadmountingframeweldedtoaroundtransitframe.
• Aroundexpansionframewithasquarepackingspace.
• Modularversatilepackersforfuturepenetrationrequirements.
Designedforeaseofinstallation,theonlyinvasiveactivityrequiredoffshorewastodrillfourboltholesfordirectmountingtothedamagedbulkheads.Anapprovedfireseal gasket was used to provide fireproof integrity between the transit frame and bulkhead.
Future proofing was achieved by using modular components with removable inner layers, designed for a flawless adaptation to various cable or pipe sizes.
