Pedaling and Brakes

The first thing about biking is to learn how to make the bike move and stop. A bike is a simple machine with wheels. Let's focus on how to move the bike. When you move the bike it is called pedaling. To pedal, you need to push off, and then push the flat, wood like bars and keep doing it. Don't be surprised if you fall of your bike the first time because, unless you have some crazy power, you are going to fall of. Now let's move on to stopping. There are two ways to stop. The first one is pedaling backwards. The second way is to press the handle brake. A brake is a type of gear that will make your bike stop.A handle brake is a lever that you push down on and located on the handle bar. When you press it the bike will slowly stop unless you press it really really fast then you will be thrown from your bike. pg. 3 W

Biking at

Night The first thing about biking at night is safety. You have to be safe to bike at night. The first part about biking at night safety is putting reflectors on your bike. Reflectors are small circles, some times triangles, that reflect the light of cars so you wont get hit. Do you know why you need to put reflectors on your bike? By putting reflectors on your bike people in cars see you and don't hit you with there cars. You also need to know the places to go to be safe. Parks and roads are good places to go. Most local golf courses are closed, but if there is a golf course open late, those are good places to go. So are calm neighborhoods. At night a lot of cars are moving, so the road is not the best place to go. You still can but you need reflectors on your bike. Remember, the first thing about biking at night is safety.

Gliding

Gliding is a form of biking where you relax your legs and let the wind cool you off. When you glide, you can stand up, or stay siting. Gliding is when you coast, and letting the wind cool you off. How to glide is simple, you stop pedaling and keep your feet in the place that they are in and stay that way until you want to pedal again. The same thing goes for standing up gliding. This is a way to stop. It is also another way to go down a hill.

You need a bike to glide! Otherwise, you wouldn't get anywhere! pg. 8 W

Turning

Turning is a very important part of biking. To turn, lean to one side and turn your handle bars the way you want to turn and you will go that way. Lean right, go right. Lean left, go left. Don't lean to far or you might fall over!

Gears

The first thing about gears is that they are not ship gears, they are bike gears. Gears make the pedals switch, depending on where you are. If you go uphill you can make the gears switch so pedaling is easier. If you go down a hill, you should switch gears to a harder gear to slow down, and when you get to the bottom switch back to regular. Going uphill is hard, so you should switch to an easier gear, downhill harder, then back to regular and keep pedaling or you can glide then continue pedaling.
