The detailed, color-coded routes offer cyclists a preview of slopes that will be encountered, and will enable cyclists to quickly plan routes based on length and difficulty. Routes have been selected in consultation with a wide variety of cyclists familiar with the Carroll region. Slope classification was calculated from USGS 7.5' topographic maps. Four slope categories were derived from slope analysis of the routes. Sample routes were then tested by members of a local cycling club to determine if the perception of slope would fit with the classification categories. The cycling routes were developed by the Carroll County Department of Recreation and Parks and the printing of the map was made possible by the Office of Tourism. While there has been an effort to select scenic and interesting routes where possible, this does not imply any particular degree of safety associated with these routes. Cyclists are encouraged to assess the relative physical conditions of the roads. Furthermore, traffic volume and speed can vary greatly with time of day and day of the week. Therefore, these factors must be evaluated by each cyclist when determining route safety. Map design and production was undertaken by the Spring 2004 Advanced Cartographic Design class in the Department of Geography and Environmental Systems, University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Only through the skills and perseverance of the following students was this project possible. Alan S. Belsky, Jeff B. Clark, Jason R. Hacker, James P. Sonnichsen, and Ethan R. Wells. These students worked under the direction of their instructor, Thomas D. Rabenhorst, teaming up to produce a valuable resource for the cycling community in Carroll County. Clearly, the students have demonstrated their ability to produce high-caliber cartographic work. A special thanks is extended to Ethan R. You should possess adequate bicycling skills and be knowledgeable of the vehicle laws before riding on any public roadway. Bicycles should be in good working order and possess all equipment as required by Maryland state law. Warning Effective October 1st, 1995, Maryland law states that all persons under the age of 16 who are riding a bicycle or are passengers on a bicycle must wear a protective helmet on public property. Safety Tips In Maryland, the bicycle is defined as a vehicle and as such is required to operate under the same rules and regulations as a motorized vehicle. Ride on the right side of the road with the flow of traffic. Cyclists are required to obey all traffic signals and signs. Within the Town Limits of Sykesville, a protective helmet must be worn by all persons while operating or riding a bicycle. Check your bike for loose parts. Check the tire pressure and make sure everything is running smoothly. Be visible to drivers whenever you are on the road. Attach a "Day-Glow" flag on a 6- foot flexible staff to your bike. Check for traffic before entering a street from a driveway, parking lot, or sidewalk. Walk your bike across busy intersections and streets. Know and use proper hand signals when turning left and right or stopping. Be especially careful when making a left turn. When riding with groups, ride in single file. Watch for car doors swinging open when you are riding alongside parked cars. Only ride on authorized streets/roads. Bicycles are prohibited on major freeways and interstates. If you must ride at night, make sure your bike is equipped with proper lights and reflectors. Wear reflective tape on your clothing. Avoid areas of broken pavement, litter, loose gravel, mud, or leaves. Remember, pedestrians have the right of way! Taneytown: Loop No. 1 Length: 13.8 miles Loop No. 2 Length: 30.5 miles This tour starts at Taneytown Memorial Park where a public pool and picnic grounds offer warm weather possibilities. Your tour heads toward Littlestown, PA and winds through a rustic area where deer and pheasants abound. Stop and listen to the rippling of Big Pipe Creek. Wind through the alleys of Taneytown and past the beautiful Fish and Game Club. Westminster North: Loop No. 3 Length: 30.19 miles This northern route out of Westminster will surprise you with the diversity of suburban, rural, and historical elements in the County. If you are out on country stretches in the morning, be prepared to stop for early milking migration of cows in the farmlands. Take a break at Union Mills Homestead and see the restored grist mill. Manchester: Loop No. 4S Length: 9.11 miles Loop No. 4L Length: 18.23 miles Passing one of the highest points in Carroll County, this challenging tour of the Manchester vicinity in Northeastern Carroll County presents a blend of small towns and farms complete with the natural scenic beauty of streams, woods and wildlife. Hampstead: Loop No. 5 Length: 13.9 miles A challenging tour with dozens of natural invitations to stop and enjoy meadows and pastures. Plan to refresh yourself at an old fashioned country store where homemade ice cream cones still come tall, rich and creamy. And you thought places like this were a thing of the past. Westminster South: Loop No. 6 Length: 15.1 miles This tour skirts Westminster, the county seat and largest municipality in Carroll County. The last leg brings you past the Carroll County Farm Museum, a 140-acre restored farm house and grounds where thousands of visitors enjoy festivals, fireworks and a trip back in time. Union Bridge: Loop No. 7 Length: 15.9 miles This western slip of moderately hilly terrain hugs the boundary line between Carroll and Frederick Counties, then branches out through New Windsor. Your ride flattens out for the last stretch back to Union Bridge. Wander around the Western Maryland Railway Museum, before leaving the quaint town. New Windsor: Loop No. 8 Length: 7.6 miles Wind through the beautiful Wakefield Valley on your way past Robert Strawbridge's Home (birthplace of American Methodism). This ride offers splendid scenery, picturesque 18th-19th century homes and an opportunity to stop at the New Windsor Service Center and visit its unique International Gift Shop. Sykesville: Loop No. 9 Length: 33.6 miles Get a good night's rest, fill up a bottle of water and tackle this 33.6 mile tour of Southern Carroll County. Piney Run Park and Reservoir lie just a short jaunt off MD 26. You'll enjoy a diversity of sites and scenery on this challenging tour that takes you on and off of the "old blue highways." Mt. Airy: Loop No. 10 Length: 11.1 miles Come enjoy this scenic ride that combines a close look at the heart of Mt. Airy, followed by refreshing pastoral valleys, panoramic ridges and lush farmland. Mt. Airy is in the far southwestern corner of Carroll County bordered by Frederick County to the West and Howard County to the South. LOOP ELEVATION PROFILES

This bike map provides the recreational cyclist a unique view of cycling routes in Carroll County. The detailed, color-codedroutes offer cyclists a preview of slopes that will be encountered, and will enable cyclists to quickly plan routes based on length and difficulty.
