“Don’t underestimatethe value of doingnothing….

… of just going along, listening to all the thingsyou can’t hear and not bothering” said (myfavourite) Winnie the Pooh.

I have got to the tender age of 40(ish) and I’m only just starting toappreciate the benefits of just stopping. That might sound completelyridiculous but when you’re an incredibly busy person there just isn’t thetime to stop. With endless lists, children to sort and businesses to runwhere do you schedule a ‘stop’? After all, if I stop then that pushesthings out of sync and then I’m even busier when I come to start again.

That’s right isn’t it?

Or not. We recently found ourselves child free for a day and with theweather being fairly miserable decided, uncharacteristically, to pack upsome sandwiches and a few books and drive down to Titchfield Haven. We set up camp in the back of our Bongo (lovingly known as the fun busto the kids) and sat for an afternoon doing very, very little.

It seemed decadent, luxurious and amazing. And the best bit? Itrejuvenated me and gave me moreenergy to do all the things I neededto the following week. OK so thisseems a bit obvious but until youstep out of your comfort zone andrealise the world doesn’t fall apart ifyou take a little time out then you’llnever know how therapeutic it canbe. Go on, try it.

Much love until next month

The epicenter of financial activityfor investors is the StockExchange. Be it in London (FTSE),New York (NYSE), Paris (DAC),Johannesburg (JSE), Sydney (ASX)or just about any country in theworld - the stock exchange iswhere it all happens.

On the corner of Wall and Broadstreets, the site of GeorgeWashington's inauguration, theNew York Stock Exchange isperhaps the most iconic of themall. The famed Wall Street bullstatue standing proudly on thecorner is snapped by thousandsof tourists sensing the energy andimportance of this place.Ironically, fewer than 24% ofthese people actually own anystock or invest in the stockmarket.

What pops out when you visit thefloor of the NYSE or the LondonStock Exchange is how fewpeople seem to be working at thetrading posts. This is always a bitof a letdown for me. I keephoping to see crazy tradersrunning around with tickets intheir hands like we see in themovies Wall Street or TradingPlaces.

But those days are long gone, replaced with electronic tradingfrom all over the world, andthat's a good thing for individualinvestors like you and me.Investing is more available, moreaccessible, more transparent, andcheaper than ever before. No

need to ring up your brokeranymore to buy a "lot" (100shares) of a stock.

That's because we have access tolow-cost investing like neverbefore. We also have access fromwhere ever we happen to be.Sitting on the beach inMozambique - a quick buy or sellvia my online broker and back toliving life.

That's pretty awesome – to beable to buy hundreds orthousands of a stock, to becomea part-owner (even just afraction) of great businesses forless than a six-pack of somethingnicely chilled.

One way (the best, in my mind)to take advantage of it is to setup an investing plan via an onlinebroker in an index tracking fundor Exchange Traded Fund (ETF)and commit to it for the longterm. Through the highs and thelows. Get a plan and stick with it.That's what I've been doing forwell over twelve years now andwhat I’ve got my nieces andnephews doing. Each month theyare setting aside some money toinvest into businesses (as I preferto think of it) that they plan tohold for a long time.

Not tickers. Not charts. Nottrading. Not “great tips” from thehairdresserGreat Businesses + Investing +

Long term. That's the Wealth Chef Recipe.

So whenit comestohelpingmy family put their money towork, I do what I always do – Iturn to Expand Your DoughRecipe in The Wealth Chef book.

I stick to the tried-and-truewealthy approach to regular andconsistent investing, thinking ofmy stocks as businesses with trueassets, competitive advantages, and earnings power. I invest withthe intention of owning for years- decades, even.

And that's the huge differencebetween Wealth Chef investingand the kind of activityconducted by so many traders, whether they are on the floor ofthe NYSE, FTSE, ASX or DAC;sitting in a hedge fund officesuite; trying to catch the spreadon the forex market; orexcessively trading a client'saccount in Any Town, WORLD.Wealth Chefs are business-oriented, long-term investors. We know the value of beingowners of great companies andsharing in the value.

It has worked well for me and itcan work for you, too.

If there was such a thing as aMessometer - a tool for measuringviews on mess, I wonder where you'dput yourself? At the pristine end ofthe scale where everything has itsrightful place and food is mostdefinitely to be eaten rather thanplayed with? Somewhere in themiddle, where a good amount ofcarefree messy play is healthy, butonly when balanced with a sense oforder and boundaries? Or perhaps atthe far extreme? The kind of housethat when you walk in you’re notsure if it’s been burgled, in whichcase Cheerios and hamster food onthe floor offer daily opportunities formessy play!

With washing products now offeringtriple action cleaning the removal ofstains is child’s play, yet an aversionto getting messy is sadlycommonplace among parents andchildren. People watch in the rainand you will probably see childrendiscouraged from exploring puddleswith their whole bodies, feet orhands as, sidetracked bypracticalities, us adults fail to see theage-old learning value, not tomention sheer fun.

Returning to that messy scale, I’d like

to think I’m somewhere in themiddle, much more tolerant than myhusband and generally able to seethe positives of mess! In fact I havealways found myself drawn to messyand sensorial play, as well as makinga business of it this has formed a keypart of my own children’s childhood,be it offering sand, shredded paper, water, cooked couscous, dried lentilsand rice, sandy paint or shavingfoam. With adequate planning andpreparation, messy play can providea calm and enriching experience forall involved, but I’ve learnt the hardway that preparation and boundariesare key to ensuring that this is astress free experience.

I can still remember an episode ofparticularly messy play with cookedcouscous. Heavily pregnant, myhusband arrived home from work tofind me under the kitchen table on allfours, scraping sticky gunge, sprayedby my creative 3 year old all over thekitchen! Taking a work call in themiddle of the play taught me a hardlesson. Allowing my daughter toexperiment Jackson Pollack style withcouscous it left me close to tears withexhaustion reaping the consequencesof messy play!

If you’re not a natural lover of gettingmessy then it’s good to know thatthere’s a wealth of research on thehuge benefits of giving children asensory education. Persuaded of itsimportance, the next step is makingsure that we don’t inadvertentlyproject our anxieties about mess andclearing up as children picking upadult vibes and this can affect theirability to explore and become trulyimmersed.

When trying something new orpersonally challenging, the bestapproach can often be taking it

slowly. So dipping your toe in theworld of messy play means leavingcooked couscous to the last! Mostmaterials have the potential to beused for messy or sensory play butthat is not to suggest that they areuniform in the way they perform, respond to touch or appeal tochildren. For a child with sensoryprocessing issues, who can’t happilytouch sticky wet substances, anawareness of the wealth of messyplay possibilities may be key toincluding them. Far from being anissue just for special needs, growingnumbers of children find touchingwet sticky things particularlychallenging.

A good (and low cost) starting pointcould be a paddling pool or washing-up bowl filled with shredded paper, sand or dried lentils. Simply add afew containers and spoons forpouring and filling, (recycled pots andfunnels are great) and get stuck in.Best of all June is the perfect time fortaking messy play outdoors, sowhat’s not to like?

Anger shows its face up in manydifferent scenarios particularly inrelationships. We get triggeredinto anger by many differentthings but arguments can oftenflare up when in fact all it is, is adifference of opinion.

We are never all going to see theworld in the same way – andthank goodness because it wouldbe very boring if we did. We allsee the world through differentglasses. For example aGreenpeace activist will look atwhat is done in the Amazonthrough their environmentalistmindset of it being a tragedywhereas a multi-nationalcorporation will have other

priorities. Both would argue theirpoint of view till the cows comehome and neither will everconcede to the other’s opinion. This is just an example of thediversity of the world and theywill always exist. We might notlike them but each is entitled totheir opinion.

Trouble is that when you takethose differing of opinions intorelationships it often ends upbeing turned into a personalargument rather than seeing thatit is just a conversation about twodifferent viewpoints. It is all tooeasy to get into the place whereyou fight your ground and try tomake the other person wrong,

feeling the need to be the onewho is right.

Without forethought it is virtuallyimpossible in that adversarialmoment to step back and agreeto differ. Once we are in thefeeling of wanting to prove ourpoint, to be right how can westep back?

One simple technique is to agreea phrase that brings both of youout of the illusion of needing tobe right. It can wake you up andhelp you see that this topic is notworth creating a huge personalargument about it – that yourrelationship is actually worthmore than this topic. The trick is

to agree itbeforehand.

So in what I calla sobermoment –when you arefeeling veryhappy witheach other andhave no axe togrind – have achat aboutwanting to pre-empt thearguments youhave over adiffering of

opinion. The reason you talk about it away fromthe argument is that you can both set anintention to use this method.

You agree a wake up phrase, something either ofyou can say in the moment that wakes you upfrom the compulsion to win your case and helpsyou see that it is only a differing of opinion. Itcan be any phrase – either related to thesituation or not. For example, you could say –“Hey this is one of those moment where we canagree to disagree”.

Or if you feel that would not stop the flow ofthoughts so easily you can use a silly phrase –mine is “the peas are green this summer” feelfree to borrow it if it helps.

The key is that this is an agreement between you,set an intention that when one of you uses thephrase it is time to agree to disagree and then –and this is so important - change the subject!

Plant of the monthGeranium

The leaves, covered in their unmistakable Geranium‘fuzz’, may have a slightly odd smell about them but theburst of colour emitted from the flowers that shoot forthfrom these little plants more than make up for itsshortcomings.

These are pretty tough plants and usually grow throughany off the odd problems they may get such as latesummer mildew or vine weevil larvae. Make sure they areplanted in good sunlight and protect from cold.

Geraniums are happy both as indoor or outdoor plantsand as they root easily from cuttings you can keep a goodsupply of plants on the go!

Auto biographies

Sometimes a pair of new shoes feelsjust right. No blisters ever appear andthey soon become your go-to choiceof footwear. Others cause you a littlediscomfort at first – but, once wornin, you feel as though you’d neversauntered in anything else.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 AMGSport I drove was very much thelatter example. It took me a while fine-tuning the seat to give me the bestdriving position. I then had to adjustthe steering wheel several times –and then get the lumbar supportright. For the first day I just couldn’tnail it and, squirming uncomfortably, Iwas convinced this car wasn’t for me.

But, by the second day of myweek with the Merc, I felt it wasmade with my name on it.

Some car seats just require aquick twiddle here and thereand you’re all set up. I think theCLA’s sports seats with integralheadrests simply take somegetting used to. They’resculpted in a curve-forwardsposition, and make you feel likeyour head needs to go backmore – although that couldhave been me being fussy onthe day the car was delivered.

Anyway, enough of the seatsand my hair-splitting; let meexplain why, on the whole, theCLA is an excellent piece ofGerman machinery.

Aesthetically, its proportionsand dynamic design give thecompact four-door saloon-cum-coupé an unmistakableappearance. The vehicle'sstriking features include thebonnet embedded in the frontend with power-domes and adiamond-look grille. The lightmodules and LEDs behind theheadlamp cover glass have been

arranged in such a way as to create acharacteristic "flare effect" for thedaytime driving lights and indicators. This light signet defines the car'senergetic form and shapes a new, youthful Mercedes face.

The width-emphasising rear endexudes muscle and athleticism, featuring an interplay betweenconvex and concave surfaces. Thegently sloping roof contour and thepronounced, hallmark curvature ofthe rear window, provide the CLA 250AMG Sport with a coupé-stylecharacter from the rear, too.

The exterior's progressive, sportyappearance is continued inside theBenz. All trim surfaces are galvanisedin silver shadow, resulting in a cool-to-the-touch metallic finish. Theinstrument panel incorporates fivelarge round vents and there’s aprominent free-standing displayscreen that features a black piano-lacquer-look front panel with a flush-fitting silver frame.

In the back, the seats, once again, become a sticking point. They arecramped for adults and not even thebest fit for two child seats, but myeight and five year old coped withouttoo much squabbling. On the plusside; boot space is good for this typeof car.

On the road, the CLA 250’sturbocharged four-cylinder enginerocks for most situations. The car hasexcellent grip when pushed throughcorners and its seven-speedautomatic transmission climbs anddescends excellently under pressure.Especially noteworthy is theMercedes’ direct steer system, whichoffers precise feedback in comparisonto conventional power steering.

Safety hasn’t been overlooked either, with numerous driving assistancesystems offering support andreducing your workload behind thewheel. Standard-fit features includedrowsiness detection and radar-based collision prevention assist withadaptive brake assist, which helps toprotect you from collisions from aspeed of only 4mph.

The Farm Beneath The Water, by Helen Peters

This is a feel good story of young people who pull together and are able toinfluence the outcome of the local water project. This is the second bookbased at Clayhill Farm but it can be read alone (although I’ll probably readthe first one now as I enjoyed this one so much).

Hannah’s dad is behaving strangely – has he joined a dating agency? Issomeone moving in with them? But it turns out that he is gathering evi-dence to show that the farm is in an important place historically and envi-ronmentally and it’s all to gather evidence as the farm is under threat as awater company wants to flood the valley to build a reservoir.

Both sides of the argument are explored – one family losing their home versus the benefits to the wholecommunity. All is not as it seems and Hannah and her friends pull together using the school play to pre-sent their arguments.

This is a really good read which shows family and school life and the dilemmas that face us all.
