FROM STATEPOINT MEDIASnack time can make or break an

otherwise healthy diet. So keeping tabs on what your kids are munching on between meals is important.

The bottom line, say experts, is to aim to nurture their bodies with pure, wholesome foods as close to nature as possible.

“Getting your kids hooked on fresh fruits and vegetables early will set them up for a lifetime of great eating habits,” says Mitzi Dulan, “America’s Nutrition Expert,” and team nutritionist for the Kansas City Royals baseball team.

Dulan is offering these tips for parents to help kids get their snack on, healthfully:

• Plan ahead: Set up a grocery shopping routine that allows you to have fresh foods on hand for the entire week. On school nights, reserve 10 minutes with the kids to pack the next day’s snacks together.

• Avoid high-calorie drinks: Wash snacks down with water or organic low-fat milk. Avoid giving your kids

high-calorie and sugar-filled drinks such as sodas, juices and energy drinks.

• Make it colorful: Skip highly processed snacks such as candy bars, chips, fruit snacks and store-bought cookies. Instead, complement fresh fruits and vegetables with peanut butter, hummus or low-fat dressings.

• Get them involved: Take your kids grocery shopping with you and ask them to pick out their favorite fruits, vegetables and healthy snacks. Direct them towards options like whole wheat crackers, edamame (soybeans), trail mix with nuts and dried fruit, air-popped popcorn, Greek yogurt and unsweetened applesauce.

Involving your kids with preparing and packing a daily lunch will encourage them to make their own decisions and they will be more likely to eat what they’ve packed instead of throwing it away.

• Add a treat: Some treats are calorie free! Put in a little note to let them know how much you love them, to make Mondays or Wednes-days — or whatever day your child dreads — a bit more special.

Snack time is crucial for keeping growing kids properly fueled for their busy days — especially in the midst of fall sports season! Avoiding the sugar and fat overload at these in-between mini meals will help keep kids happier, healthier and wiser.

Smart snacks help students stay energetic, focused

FROM METRO CREATIVE CONNECTIONParents and students who want

to improve grades and classroom performance may want to look to extracurricular activities. There is evidence that some after-school activities can actually help promote better results inside of the classroom — even helping to mediate symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Activities like sports, band, cheerleading, martial arts, among other extracurricular events, can promote good feelings about school and offer lessons that carry over into the classroom environment, helping students become more successful.

A study by the U.S. Department of Education revealed that students who participate in cocurricular activities are three times more likely to have a grade point average of 3.0 or better than students who do not participate in cocurricular activi-ties. In a 2003 study published in Sociology of Education, researchers found that there are positive associ-ations between extracurricular participation and academic achieve-ment. Many adolescents who partic-ipate in extracurricular activities report higher grades, more positive attitudes toward school and higher

academic aspirations.Extracurricular activities also

may be able to correct behaviors associated with boisterous children or those who have been diagnosed with a clinical medical condition, such as ADHD. In a study titled, “The Effects of Mixed Martial Arts on Behavior of Male Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder,” researchers found that a martial arts program two times per week helped increase the percentage of completed homework, frequency of following specific classroom rules, improved academic perfor-mance and improved classroom preparation of male children ages 8 to 11 with ADHD.

There is also evidence that simple physical activity can promote better opportunities for learning. Studies largely conducted by the California Department of Education have found a correlation between physical activity and increased performance. Physically active youths tend to show improved attributes such as increased brain function and nourishment, higher energy/concen-tration levels, increased self-esteem, and better behavior, each of which can help a student perform better in the classroom.

Beyond this, there are many ways that extracurricular activities can support improvements in the classroom.

• Most activities promote physical stamina and patience.

• Students develop self-esteem and good relationships.

• Students are able to apply theories learned in the classroom in a real-world context.

• A healthy measure of competi-tion is developed.

• Students learn to value teamwork and achieve a goal through common values.

• Children are able to exert energy in a constructive way.

• Extracurriculars promote good attendance and participation in order to excel.

• Students learn self-motivation.• Students can realize success that

is not measured by test scores.• Many extracurricular activities

have a basis in rules that can keep students in check.

• Students participate in a social setting, learning through activities that they truly enjoy.

Extracurricular activities can lead to improved test scores and better behavior in the classroom. This makes the activities attractive to parents of students hoping to mold well-rounded children.

It’s important to note that, in some instances, too much of a good thing may be detrimental. If a student is so busy with a packed schedule of extracurricular activities, he or she may actually fall behind in school work. Therefore, it’s vital to keep a balance so that students can successfully manage what goes on inside of school and outside of school.

Extracurricular activities good for kids

KENDALLVILLE — Richard

Bentz has been the man behind the

scenes for East Noble golf teams,

serving as coach for the boys and

girls teams for many seasons.

This summer, he announced he

retirement. It didn’t last long.

“I was retired for about 40 days

— I’m back,” said Bentz. “I like

being around the kids and around

the golf course. I guess I wouldn’t

know what to do.”

Bentz has put together another

good team, led by three-time state

qualifier Katie Sharp.

“It’s like having a coach on the

course,” Bentz said of the senior,

who has finished second, fifth and

11th in three state appearances.

Sharp won conference,

sectional, regional titles last

season, as well as taking individual

honors at several invitationals.

“She was medalist of every

event we had up until the state

finals,” Bentz explained. “That was

quite an accomplishment.”

Sharp, who has made a verbal

commitment to attend Michigan

State University, has already

earned medalist honors in three

outings this season before

Tuesday’s Snider Invitational at

Noble Hawk Golf Links.

The Knights hosted the East

Noble Invitational on Saturday at

Noble Hawk Golf Links where

Sharp shot a 74 to lead the way.

She also was medalist in a

meeting with West Noble and

opened the season by posting the

best score at the Homestead Invita-

tional. The Homestead Invitational

is an early season measuring stick

and the Knights came away with a

sense that a good season was ahead,

placing second in the tough event.

“We played well. Any time you

place second in that field you’ve

got to be happy. The tough thing

is, the teams that were close at

Homestead were teams from our

conference.”

women’s hurdles.

—Another

Olympic disappointment for

—On top: Hoy sets British

record with 6th Olympic gold.

Aly Raisman’s reaction was

right on. She put together a crisp

floor routine Tuesday, then

mouthed, “Wow” after she saluted

the judges.Wow, indeed.

Raisman became the first U.S.

woman to win Olympic gold on

floor, and she picked up a bronze

on balance beam on the final day

of the gymnastics competition at

the London Olympics.

“It definitely went better than I

thought it would,” Raisman said.

Raisman just missed a medal in

the all-around, finishing with the

same score as Russia’s Aliya

Mustafina but dropping to fourth

on a tiebreak. She was on the right

end of the rules for beam Tuesday,

bumping Romania’s Catalina

Ponor off the podium.

The U.S. captain initially

finished fourth, with a score of

14.966. But she questioned it, and

judges added an extra tenth to her

routine’s difficulty after a review.

That gave her and Ponor

identical scores of 15.066, but

Raisman got the bronze because

her execution score was higher.

“A gold medal is a gold medal,

but I definitely felt like (beam) was

redemption from the other night in

the all-around,” Raisman said. “I

was in the same exact position, but

it went in my favor this time.”

China collected two more golds

when Feng Zhe won the parallel

bars and Deng Linlin the beam

competition. Epke Zonderland won

the high bar, the first medal for a

Dutch man and only the second

Olympic medal overall for the

Netherlands in the sport.

It will be an All-American party

at beach volleyball when Kerri

Walsh Jennings and Misty May-

Treanor take on April Ross and

Jennifer Kessy in Wednesday

night’s final.

Walsh Jennings and May-

Treanor won gold medals in

Athens in 2004 and Beijing in

they ran their unbeaten streak to 20
