There Were Also Lessons Learned

To have buffets instead of sit-down meals so everyone can

choose what they want or can eat

To enforce slide submission deadline so that we have enough

time to check all presentations for relevancy and potential

topic overlaps

To have longer technology track sessions

To start promoting the BDW earlier so more people know

about it

The event was successful! We had Arzumy from

says.com talking about scaling and infrastructure and

how they cope with the amount of data they process

everyday.

Then we had Damien and Tim from Geomash talking

about Geo services and strategies for summarizing and

presenting data so access time is fast.

Finally, we had Yongho from Mindvalley discuss how to

use data to drive good business decisions.

100+ attended the event and the majority were from

outside the KL Ruby Brigade and NoSQL groups.

by the Faculty of Science and Technology in

Sunway University on the 7th of May 2014.

This workshop was an introductory hands-on

session to text mining which allowed

participants to identify their Facebook’s

content and social conversations.

The workshop also featured the use of social

network analytical tools which are able to

highlight the strength of ties and closeness of

friends in a social media platform.

Participants of the workshop were from a

diverse range of organizations including GPS

research, Farseer Consulting, Millenium

32 Roundtable on Big Data Analytics With Govt. Officials (Closed-Door)

By MDeC-IBM

A Roundtable Discussion was organized by MDeC in

collaboration with IBM Malaysia with the purpose of

creating awareness among government officials on the

impact of Big Data in the public sector. The theme was Big

Data Analytics, a blue print for success. The event was

chaired by Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, CEO of MDeC, and was

attended by a total of 40 representatives from 15 different

government ministries and agencies.

Mr. Amish Patel gave a presentation on Big Data, which

covered topics such as “Developing the National Big Data

Framework”, “Open Data.gov” and public sector BDA

implementation case studies in other countries.

The Roundtable discussion provided a better insight and

understanding among government officials on the potential

and benefits of Big Data to the public sector and how IBM

33 Big Data Info Retrieval And Representation In Telcos By TM R&D

TM Research & Development (TM R&D) organized the 5th

Big Data in Telecommunication in conjunction with Big

Data Week Kuala Lumpur 2014.

Big Data Analytics in Malaysia is emerging as datasets are

becoming so large and complex that it becomes difficult

to process using conventional database management

tools or traditional data processing applications. Thus,

TM R&D has taken this challenge to lead the big data

trend in Malaysia.

The objective of this gathering was to provide exposure

and detailed explanation on Big Data technology from a

telco’s viewpoint and to support the Big Data Week.

The event saw five key speakers share their insights on

respective expertise related to the Big Data Information

Retrieval and Representation in the Telco Domain

theme.

Page 34: Big Data Week Kuala Lumpur 2014 Post-Event Report

34 Large-Scale File Systems For Big Data Analytics By SNIA

In this event, the topics covered were:

1) Massive scale file system for Big Data Analytics - SNIA Malaysia

2) Converged systems/Software Defined Storage for Big Data - Nutanix

3) Object filesystem - HDS

The crowd found the topics revolving around storage interesting because it was never presented the way it

should be appreciated. Based on the interactive conversations, there is much interest leading towards

requirements and advisory services. And this Big Data Week is a good platform to inject many opportunities

toward the storage networking industry.
