¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español! Course Description: This is the first course in the beginning sequence of Spanish at University of Maine at Presque Isle. You are about to embark on a fascinating journey where you will develop a solid foundation in Spanish while improving your speaking, writing, listening, and reading comprehension skills. You will be exposed to the “5C’s”: communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities. With each lesson, vocabulary and grammar will be incorporated into thematic units. We will learn about the Spanish cultures, traditions, geography, history, music, and literature topics. It is through this journey that you will commence learning a second language. You will gain the confidence and the ability to communicate with the Hispanic community. Course Objects: You will discover, learn, and practice many of the basic structure of Spanish. Your professor will provide assistance and guidance when necessary. The course will be structure to accommodate your individual needs. In addition, you will communicate and access course materials via Blackboard. By the end of the course, you will be able to demonstrate communication skills. You will develop your writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills. You will increase your knowledge on various Spanish cultures and traditions while becoming aware of the cultural and language diversity that make Latino heritage so unique. Technology: You will need to access Blackboard for weekly assignments as well as a current UMPI email address. All students are required to log on to the course's “Blackboard” page, found at http://www.courses.maine.edu. Textbooks: On-line course material can be purchased at the bookstore on UMPI’s
campus. You are purchasing a code that contains the online textbook
and all the materials that you will need for this course. This code allows
you to go online, register for the course and obtain access to the
materials. See Greg at the bookstore for further information should you
have trouble finding it in the bookstore.

Grading Guidelines: Homework: 30% Assignments will range from the online textbook lessons’ exercises and various worksheets that will reinforce the material that has been covered in class. Assignments are due on their due dates. **No late assignments will be accepted. Exams: 35% There will be a vocabulary, grammar exams in every lesson as well as a chapter exam following each lesson; these exams will be focusing on the grammar, vocabulary, and the material covered in the chapter. When an exam is scheduled, it must be completed by the due date. There will be no make-up exam. Project: 35% There will be one major project, which will be presented on our last day of class. This project will be your final. You will choose a Spanish speaking country and you will be required to conduct research on this country. You will then present your information to the class via a PowerPoint presentation on Blackboard. This project is worth 35% of your grade. More information will be given in class as well as a rubric. Grades: A = 93 - 100% B- = 80 - 82% D+ = 68 - 69% A- = 90 - 92% C+ = 78 - 79% D = 63 - 67% B+ = 88 - 89% C = 73 - 77% D- = 60 - 62% B = 83 - 87% C- = 70 - 72% F = < 59%
