Our charge is to provide the people of this region with access to the arts and to create a memorable cultural experience. With this as the backdrop, SAMA’s commitment extends to promoting regional artists, as well as other artists of the Commonwealth, through the exhibitions program and the Museum’s acclaimed juried exhibition – the Biennial. The Biennial celebrates the creativity, talent and ability of many of Pennsylvania’s best artists. These dedicated artists spend countless hours in the studio working their craft and producing good quality, beautiful works of art. This year marks SAMA’s sixth Biennial exhibition. The Biennial has its roots in what was originally the Museum’s invitational Triennial exhibition, which was designed to celebrate this area’s finest artists. The Museum is proud to continue the tradition and to host Biennial 2012 as a showcase for the work of artists from across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This exhibition speaks to the creative spirit and artistic expression of Pennsylvania’s contemporary artists. The recipient of the 2012 Merit Award for Best of Show, the most prestigious award offered by the Museum, is presented to Michael Allison for his work, Scotch Bonnet #3. In addition, we are pleased to offer awards of merit in the categories of painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and crafts. My heartiest of congratulations is extended to all the artists who participated in this exhibition; I am awestruck by the quality of the work you do. My sincere appreciation is extended to all of the individuals who worked to make Biennial 2012 a memorable program for the participating artists and a noteworthy event for the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art. I offer a special thank you to Jeanne Gleason, SAMA Trustee Emeritus, who served as selections juror and whose dedication to task and respect for the artists contributed immeasurably to the Biennial’s success. Award-winning and acclaimed photographer Donald M. Robinson served admirably as awards juror; he tackled the daunting task of selecting winners from a deep pool of artistic talent and I thank him for his tenacity, focus and professionalism. I thank the Museum staff and specifically Registrar/Interim Curator, Bobby Moore, who deserves special recognition for her efforts to bring Biennial 2012 to the Museum. I also recognize an active and involved community whose continued support is critical to the Museum’s future. Finally, I thank the Director’s Circle, Museum Associates, Education and Exhibition Patrons and other donors who give generously to help make our work at Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art possible. BIENNIAL MERIT AWARDS

AWARD JUROR’S STATEMENT

SELECTION JUROR’S STATEMENTOnce again, I am amazed at the talent, creativity, and quality of the artists in west central Pennsylvania. I know thatI shouldn’t be, as I’ve been captivated with the significance and range of work from these various artists for many years. In the more than 25 years that I have been involved with the artistic community serving as Executive Director of thePennsylvania Rural Arts Alliance and membership on the boards of the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art, thePittsburgh Ballet Theatre, and the Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center, the fact that this area has the best of the visual andperforming arts anywhere is proven to me daily.

As juror for this year’s Biennial, I had the pleasure of viewing, over and over again, slides of the many submissions ofexcellent work. From drawings to paintings, from abstract to traditional, from sculpture to woodcraft, it was fulfillingto view these artists’ creations! It was an honor to be immersed in the many limitless examples submitted from ourregion’s artists. The artists show freedom, ingenuity, and originality. We are so fortunate to have them living amongus and inspiring all of us, especially our children.

Jurying such a body of work is a real challenge. It’s really too bad that any piece had to be left out of this competition.Another juror may have chosen differently than I did and that piece might be in the mix. Alas, there is only so muchroom in the exhibition to view the selections properly.

The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art is to be commended for conducting the Biennial and giving all of us thechance to enjoy the lush beauty and rich talent of our region through the capable hands of these artists. I am gratefulto have had the opportunity to be a part of it.

The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art exists to preserve, exhibit, and advance American art and is dedicated tomaking its programs and activities accessible to the people of the southwestern area of central Pennsylvania. TheMuseum mounts exhibitions designed to evoke an interest in and an understanding of American art. As well, it servesas a repository for distinctive collections.

The art I was privileged to judge speaks clearly and provocatively to the viewer, making its point entirely throughpaint, form, line, texture, and color. Embracing new outlooks and constant self-evaluation are the hallmarks of anartist/photographer. Complete originality isn’t the point here. It’s the redirection and new outlook that such sea changesrequire of the artist. To grow and continue to contribute to your own style, it is necessary to step out of yourparticular rut to try new things. I believe art is something that pleases the eye, compels the viewer to study it, and makesobvious the artistry that went into creating the piece.

In general, the work met all the above criteria and was a testimonial to the excellence of the Biennial.
