    Theseinstructionswillhelpyoucreateapairofbicyclepanniersthatwillcomfortablyfitabicyclerackthatmeasuresapproximately17by5(Seethepictureswiththepanniersonthewhitebicycle).Ifyourbicyclerackissmallerthanthis,youmayneedtochangethepanniersizemeasurementstocompensateforyourbicyclerack.Seethephotosattheendofthistutorialforacloserlookathowtoattachthepanniersandhowtheylookonasmallersizedbicyclerack(Seethepictureswiththepanniersonthesilverbicycle).Thefinaldimensionsofeachsinglepannierare13tallby4wide.

Ifyouusinginterfacing,fuseorsewtheinterfacingtothewrongsideofeachmatchingexternalsection.Ifyouaresewingtheinterfacingin,trytouseasmallseamwidthsuchas1/4orwhateveriscomfortableforyou,sincesomeoftheseamsusedlaterwillbefairlysmallandyoudontwantyourinterfacingstitchestobeseenonthefinalproduct.Ihaveusedredthreadthroughoutthistutorialtohelpyouseemystitchesbetter,butifIweretosewitagain,Iwoulduseamoresubduedthreadcolor.PleasenoticethatIdidnotuseinterfacinginmypanniers.Again,ifIweretomakeitagain,Iwouldmakesuretouseheavyweightinterfacingtoavoidthepossibilityofhavingthebagrubagainsttherearwheelsofthebicycle.

    4. Ibeganmysewingwiththeconnectorflappiece.FirstIverticallypinnedtwoofthe2hookpiecesofVelcroontotherightsideofthelong,straightedgeofthesmallconnectorflappiece.Imeasuredinapproximately1infromeithersideoftheflappieceandcenteredeachpieceofVelcro.IstitchedtheVelcroinplace.

    5. NextItookthecoordinatinginteriorliningpieceofthesmallconnectorflapand,withrightsidestogether,Ipinnedtheliningtotheflap.IleftanopeningontheroundededgeofthepiecesothatIcouldturnitrightsideoutafterIwasdonestitching.Ithenstitchedalongmypinninglines.

    6. Itrimmedtheuppercorneredges(carefulnot

    tocutthroughmystitching)andImadesomereliefcutsaroundtheroundededgesothattheseedgeswouldcomeoutbetterwhenIturnedentirepiecerightsideout.

    7. Iusedmyeverhandy,extralongforcepsthatIpurchasedatHarborFreighttoclampontooneoftheinsidecornersofthepieceandturnitrightsideoutthroughtheopeningthatIhadleftunstitched.IalsousedtheseforcepstohelppushthesamecorneredgesoutafterIhadgottenthepieceturnedrightsideout.

    8. NowIturnedintheopening,pinneditandthenedgestitchedaboutaroundtheentirepiecetogiveitafinishedlook.

    9. Inowmovedontothelargeconnectorflappiecesandpinnedtheexternalandinternalliningpiecestogether,withtherightsidesfacingeachother.IlefttheentirestraightedgeofthepieceopensothatIcouldturnthepiecerightsideoutthroughthisopening.

    10. Istitchedalongmypinninglines,andthenImadesomereliefcutssimilartotheonesIhadmadeonthesmallconnectorflappiecethatIhadjustfinished.Iusedmyforcepstoturnthelargeconnectorpiecerightsideout.ThenIedgestitchedaroundthesamethreesidesthatIhadjuststitched,leavingthe

    sameopeningthatIhadusedtoturnitrightsideout.

    11. Tofinishtheentireconnectorflappiece,Ipinned

    thesmallconnectorflappieceontothelargeconnectorflappiece,withtheinteriorliningsidesfacingeachother.Ithensewedthesmallconnectorpieceontothelargepieceusingaseamaroundthethreesidesofthesmallconnectorflappiece,makingsuretoleavethestraightedgeopen.Ibasicallymadeasmallpocketoutofthesetwopieces.Ifyouarefollowingalong,yoursshouldkindofresembleapotholder.

    12. Youcanputtheconnectorflappieceofftothesidefora

    while,becausenowIwillshowyouhowtomaketheactualpannierbagpieces.First,horizontallycenterandsew2ofthe2hookVelcropiecesontooneoftheexternalfront/backpieces.IspacedmypiecesofVelcro4fromthebottomcurvededgeofthebagfrontand4fromthesideofthebagfront.Irepeatedthesemeasurementsfortheothersideofthebottomofthebagfront.Ithenrepeatedthesesamestepsforthesecondbagfront.Iwasthenleftwithtwobagfrontpiecesthateachhad2piecesofhookVelcrosewnnearthebottomedgeofthem.

    13. NowIhadtoattachthegussettothefrontbagpiecethatIhadjustsewntheVelcroonto.Itmay

    bealittledifficulttoseeinthepictures,buttheeasiestwaythatIfoundtoensurethatyouareattachingthegussetevenlyontothefrontbagpieceistofoldthegussetmaterialinhalf(similartowhenyoucutitout)withthewrongsidestogether.Nowfoldthefrontbagpieceinhalf(again,similartowhenyoucutitout)withthewrongsidestogether.Nowmatchupthecentersofthesetwopieces,withtherightsidestogether,andplaceapininthecenteredgetoholdthem.Youwillneedtohavethegussetloweredgeandthefrontbagpieceloweredgestogether.ThepictureillustratesitmuchbetterthanIcanverballydescribeit.

    14. Oncethecenterpinisinplace,you

    simplypintherestoftheloweredgeandthesideedgesofthegussetandthefrontbagpiecetogether.Youwillhavetomakesomereliefcutsintothegussetmaterialtomakeitfitaroundtheroundededgeofthefrontbagpiece.Dontmakethesecutstoodeepsinceyouwillbeusingaroundaseamtostitchthesepiecestogetherandyoudontwantholesinthoseedges.Asyoucanseefromthepictures,Iusedalotofpinsaroundmyedges,sinceIamstillnotoverlyconfidentinsewingaroundedgeslikethese.Ifeellikeonceyougetoverconfident,thenyougotosewitandyouendupwithabunchofwrinklesorbiggapingholes.

    15. Youregoingtorepeatsteps13and14fortheotherexternalfrontbagpiece.Youwillalsoneedtosewtheinternalliningfrontbagpiecestotheinternallininggussetsusingsteps13and14.Ifounditmucheasiertosewallofthesepiecesaroundthesametimesinceyouarebasicallyjustrepeatingtheexactsamesteps.Itseemstogobyalittlefasterifyousetitupinabitofanassemblylinetypeofsituationsinceyouareabletorepeatthesametypesofstitchesandyoudonthavetogobacklaterandtrytorememberhowtosewaparticularpiece.

    16. Onceyouhavethefrontbagpiecessewnontothegussets(forboththeexternalbagpiecesandtheinternalliningpieces),youwillnowattachthebackbagpiecesontothegussets.Itmaybealittledifficulttoseefromthepictures,sinceIusedtheredliningpiecestoillustratethis,buttheeasiestwaythatIfoundtoattachthesepiecesistofirstlaythewrongsideofthefrontbagpieceflatonyourworksurface.

    Youwillthenfoldthegussetpartontothefrontbagpiece,similartohowyouhaditpinnedinitiallywhenyousewedthetwopiecestogether.Thedifferencehere,though,isthatyouwillfoldthebottomedgeofthegussetawayfromthefrontbagpiece.Youarebasicallytryingtofoldthesewnpiecesalmostinanorigamitypeofwaytofindthecenterofthegusset.Ifyouhaveitfoldedsimilartothepicture,therightsideofthegussetshouldnowbeexposedalongthebottomofthebag,inasortofflattenedupsidedowntriangle.

    Findthecenteroftheexposed,rightsideofthegussetandthisshouldbethecenterof

    thegusset,assumingthatyourotherfoldededgesareallfoldeddownniceandflat.

    Nowtakethebacksideofthebag,withtherightsidefacingdown,andlineupthebottomedgeofthebagwiththebottomedgeofthegusset,whereyoujustfoundthecenterofthegusset.Makesuretolineupthesidesofthebacksideofthebagwiththesidesofthefrontsideofthebag.Placeapininthecenter(orasclosetothecenteraspossible)ofthebackofthebagandthegusset.Fromhereyoushouldbeabletopintherestoftheedgesofthebacksideofthebagtothegussetinasimilarfashionasyoudidinstep14.

    Animportantnotehere:whenyouarepinningtheinteriorliningpieces,youwillneedtoleaveanopeninginthebottom,centeroftheback.Theopeningwillprobablyneedtobeabout4to5incheswidesothatyoucanturntheentirebagrightsideout.Otherthanthisdifferencebetweentheexteriorandinteriorbagpieces,youwillbefollowingstep14tostitchthebagpiecestogether.

    17. Nowthatyouhaveyourbagpieces

    sewn,itstimetoputtheinteriorandexteriorofthemtogether.Todothis,youwillneedtoturntheinteriorliningrightsideoutsothattherawedgesoftheseamsareontheinside.Keeptheexteriorbagturnedwrongsideoutsothattherawedgesoftheseamsareontheoutside.Nowyouwillplacethebaglininginsidetheexteriorofthebagsothattherightsidesofbothpiecesarefacingeachother.

    18. Topinthebag,beginwithoneofthecornersofthebagandlineuptheinteriorliningseamwiththeexteriorbagseam.Youwillneedtoopenuptherawedgesoftheseamsonboththeliningandtheexteriorandyouwillneedtomakesurethattheopenedgeofthebagpartsarelineduptothebestofyourability.Minedidntlineupexactly,probablyduetoslightdifferencesinsizewhenIcutthematerialorwhenIsewedsomeofthepiecestogether.Aslongasthesedifferencesarenttoolarge,youshouldbefine.Trytolinetheedgesupasmuchasyoucanandyoucantrimtheexcesspartseitherbeforeyousewtheedgesorafterifyouareconfidentthatthedifferencewontinterferewithyourseamallowance.

    19. Onceyougetonecornerpinned,continuepinningtheremaining3cornersofthebag.Fromthereyoucanmoreaccuratelypintherestofthebag.Youmayneedtostretchthematerialalittletogetittoworkwithyou.WhenIpinnedthelongedgeofthebag,IbeganbylininguptheedgesbyholdingontothetwocornersthatIhadalreadypinned,andthenIputapininthecenterofthelongedge.Iknowthissoundslikealotofexplanationandworkjusttopinsomething,buttrustme,youdontwanttogetthemajorityofitpinned,orevenworse,sewnonlytorealizethatthereisahugebubbleofexcessfabricsomehowleftattheend.

    20. Onceyoufinishpinningyourbags,useaboutaseamallowancetosewtheedgestogether.

    21. Whenyouhavefinishedsewingthebagpiecestogether,reachintothebagandpulltheliningout.Thenreachyourhandintotheopeningintheliningandpulltheexteriorofthebagthroughtheliningopening.Onceyouhavethebagpulledrightsideout,youwillneedtopushtheliningbackintotheexteriorofthebagandpintheedgeofthebagopeningsothatyoucancreateanedgestitchtogivethebagamorepolishedlook.Theedgestitchshouldbeaboutaseamallowance.

    22. Youcansetthebottombagpartstothesidefornowwhileyouworkonthebagflap.FirstyouwillneedtosewtheloopsectionsofVelcroontotheinteriorliningpanelssothattheywillmatchupwiththehooksectionsofVelcroonthebottompartofthebag.Basedonmymeasurements,youwillneedtohorizontallycenterandattacheachofthe2sectionsofloopVelcroatleast4infromtheouteredgeoftheflapandapproximately2upfromthebottomoftheflap.

    23. Nextyouwillattachtheflapliningandexteriorpiecestogetherinthesamemannerthatyou

    madethelargeconnectorflappieceinsteps9and10whereyouplacedtheinteriorandexteriorpiecestogether,rightsidestogether.Youwillonlybesewingthreesidesoftheflap,justlikeinsteps9and10,thenyouwillturnthepiecesrightsideoutandthenedgestitchthepieces.

    24. Youcannowsettheflappiecesofftothesidewhileyoufinishtheconnectorpiecethatwillholdbothbagsidestogether.Placeoneoftheexternalconnectorpiecepanelsonyourworkingsurface.Youwillnowsewthefinal2piecesof2hookVelcroontooneoftheshortendsoftheconnectorpanel.YoushouldverticallycenterandseweachpieceofVelcroatleast2infromtheouteredgeandflushwiththebottomoftheconnectorpanel.

    25. NextIfoundthatifyouplaceeachofthe3

    piecesofloopVelcroontotheircorresponding2pieceofhookVelcrothatyoujustattached,youdontneedtopintheminplace.Youwillneedtoletaboutofthe3loopVelcropiecesoverlapthebottomedgeoftheconnectorpanel(seepicture).ThisensuresthattherewontaccidentallybeagapbetweenthetwopiecesofVelcroonthefinishedpiece.

    26. Ontheoppositeshortendoftheconnectorpanel,youwillnowneedtopintheconnectorflapthatyoufinishedatthebeginningofthistutorial.Muchlikethepreviousstep,ifyoulineupthe4piecesofloopVelcrowiththeircorresponding2sectionsofhookVelcroonthesmallpartoftheconnectorflap,youwillnotneedtopintheminplace.Thelong,tailendofthe4sectionsofVelcroshouldstickoutpasttheopenedgeofthelargeconnectorflappiece(seepicture).OnceyouhavetheVelcropiecesinplaceontheconnectorflap,youcanplaceit,Velcrosidedown,ontotheshortedgeoftheconnectorpanel.Centertheflapontheshortedgeandoverlaptheshortedgeoftheconnectorpanelwiththeopenedgeoftheconnectorflapbyabout.Thiswillensureagoodconnectionbetweenthetwopieces.Pintheflapontotheconnectorpanel.

    27. NowyouwilladdthefinalpiecesofVelcroontotheconnectorpanel.Iattachedthepairof5hookandloopsectionstoeachothersothatwhenIplacedthemhorizontallyacrossthewidthoftheconnectorpanel,therewasaboutaoverlaponeithersideoftheconnectorpanel.IthenpinnedtheattachedpiecesofVelcroapproximatelyatthe5andthe11marksalongthelengthoftheconnectorpanel.WithallofthepiecesofVelcroeitherpinnedorsewnontotheconnectorpanel,Iplacedtheotherconnectorpanelontopofit,withrightsidesfacing.Imadesuretoleaveabouta2to3gapbetweentwoofthe5piecesofVelcroononesideofthepanelsothatIcouldturntheentirepanelrightsideoutafterIfinishedsewingit.

    28. AfterIsewedtheconnectorpanelpiecestogetherusingaseamallowance,ItrimmedtheexcessVelcropiecesthatwerestickingoutandItrimmedthecornersofthepanel.Iturnedthepanelrightsideout,pinnedtheopeningclosedandthenusedaedgestitchtocompletetheconnectorpanel.

    29. Nowitstimetoputtheentirebagtogether.Pleasebearwithmeonthispartbecauseitisalittlehardtodescribe.Hopefullythisdescription,incombinationwiththepictures,shouldhelpyou.FirstlaythebottompartofthebagdownontoyourworksurfacewiththeopeningfacingyouandthesidewiththeVelcrosewnonitonthebottom,touchingtheworksurface.Nextplacetheconnectorpanelontopofthebottompartofthebag,withthesidethathasalloftheVelcroattachmentsonthebottom.Tryyourbesttocentertheconnectorpanelontopoftheback,bottompartofthebagandlineuptheedges.Thetoplayerofthisbagsandwichwillbeoneoftheflappanels.Youwillplaceitwiththeliningsideupandyouwillalsoneedtotrytocenteritontopoftheback,bottompartofthebagandlineitupwiththeotheredgesoftheconnectorpanelandthebottombagpart.Pinallthreelayersanduseaseamallowance.

    30. Onceyouhavetheflap,connectorpanelandbottombagpartssewntogether,placethebagbackinthepositionyouhaditinwhenyoupinnedthethreelayerstogetherwiththeflapontop.Nowfliptheflapdown/towardsyou.Useaseamallowancetoreinforcetheflapattachment(seepicture).

    31. Youarenowgoingtoattachtheotherbagtotheconnectorpanel.Usingthesametheoryasinstep29,laytheremainingbottombagpartdownontoyourworksurfaceandcentertheconnectorpanelontopofit.Centerandalignitwiththebag,justlikeinstep29.Next,placethe

    remainingflappanelontop,againinthesamemannerasinstep29,makingsuretocenterandalignitwiththeothertwolayers.Pinandsew.

    32. Repeatstep30withtheflapthatyoujustattached.

    33. Onemoremajorstepleft.Youaregoingtopintheupper,innercornersofthebagtogetherandstitchaboutaninchin.Whatthiswilldoishelptokeepthebagfromsaggingopenatthetop.Iusedmymachinetosewthese,butyoucansewthembyhandifyouwouldlike.
