Clinton Sawmill Museum
When open, the Clinton Sawmill Museum will tell the story that from the 1850s to 1890s, Clinton was “THE LUMBER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD,” peaking in 1892 with over 195 million board feet of lumber being produced - enough to build about 25,000 houses, businesses and barns. Lumber from Clinton's mills helped fuel America's Westward expansion, sending lumber across the country to build the American West and cities like Chicago and Kansas City. Because of lumber, Clinton became home to more millionaires, and future billionaires per capita, than any other city in the U.S. during this period. The Clinton Sawmill is a story of national significance. It includes the stories of: the Great Northwoods; the Mississippi River; the railroads; a story of workers, immigrants and entrepreneurs; and effects on the environment, including lessons for the 21st century. It is the story of a classic American town - boom, bust, recovery, ingenuity, perseverance and lasting pride. 2231 Grant Street, Clinton. Contact: (563) 242-0343 or e-mail: [email protected].
