1. INTRODUCTION

Journals are important media for communication and they are the primary source of information

which publishes the articles including the current development in any field of knowledge and they also play a vital role for communicating the latest research findings. Scholarly journals act as forceful reflectors for carried out new trends in any field and are the indicators of literature growth in any discipline and are the main channel for transfer of knowledge.

Information forms the integral base for the cultural, economic and scientific development of the country as a whole and is one of the most useful resources for a nation. Information has been increasing at an exponential rate since the first scientific journal started publication in 1665, the

journal publication has also been increasing.

Bibliometric study is a distinctive research technique for measurement of science based on citation data and it sees the effectiveness of a system. It has extensive applications in the field of library and information science and it is the quantitative description of the literature, helps in the measurement of

patterns of all forms of recorded information. 2. REVIEW OF LITERATURE Many primary and secondary sources of information have been consulted and gone through details in order to have theoretical perspective of the concept of the bibliometric study and citation analysis

and reviewed the previous studies undertaken on different subjects and journals. From the review of

literature, a brief summary has been enumerated below in different headings and sub-headings:

Mete and Deshmukh (1996) analysed the ‘Annals of Library Science and Documentation’ which discusses the citation analysis of articles of Annals of Library Science and Documentation from the

year 1984-93. This study found that library professionals have the tendency to refer to the journals in which they write.

Deshpande and Rajyalakshmi (1997), analysed the dissertations in Library and Information Science from the year 1990-94, which have been submitted to the Nagpur University. The study reveals that

the Annals of Library Science and Documentation was the most cited journal. Majeed (2001) has undertaken a studied the LIS Literature in University News, which reveals the significance of LIS literature which is published through non-LIS periodicals. For this bibliometric

study of the LIS articles of University News published during the period from 1983-2000 was carried out.

Parameswaran and K G (2001) evaluated the LISA through bibliometric analysis, which includes 60 issues of LISA published during 1994-1998 for analysis. The study reveals that Indian and foreign

journals having a maximum number of citations have been recognised and the authors publishing the maximum number of articles have been recognised. Rajendran Pillai (2005), evaluated the KELPRO BULLETIN through a bibliometric analysis. Within

this study, bibliometric analysis of articles and citations of Kelpro Bulletin from the year 1997-2004 has been carried out. This study reveals that the journal has the highest number of contributions in

the area of computer application in library and information science during the period of study. The journal has published 121 articles during the period of study and most of the contributors are single authors with 58.68%.

Patra and Chand (2006) studied the library and information science research in India. Within this study, the analysis of library and information science research literature from India has been carried out. The study reveals that most of the LIS research output of India is published in Indian journals.

Bibliometric Study of KELPRO Bulletin: A Bi-Annual Journal of Kerala Library Professionals’ Organisation

348 Library Progress (International)/ Vol.39 No.2/ July-December 2019

Thanuskodi (2011) analysed the Library Herald journal for the period between 2006 to 2010. The analysis finds out that out of 138 articles 66 (47.83%) articles were contributed by joint authors while the rest72(52.17%) contributed by single author.

Garg and Bebi (2014) evaluated the Annals of Library and Information Studies (ALIS) and DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology (DJLIT) through a citation study. This study reveals the immediacy index and impact factor of both the journal and also reveals that DJLIT published more papers and receives more citations than ALIS.

Patra (2014) conducted a Google scholar-based citation analysis of Indian Library and Information

Science journals. Google scholar is the only available global database for the citation analysis of Indian LIS Journals. This study focused on the citation and authorship patterns of selected LIS

Journals and this study reveals that Indian LIS Journals have low visibility even in Google Scholar.

Wankhede, Kakde and Bhikaji (2015) conducted a bibliometric analysis of the Urban Library Journal on DOAJ. In this study, the bibliometric analysis of 36 papers published in this journal during the period 2010-2014 has been carried out. The study reveals that most of the papers (33.33%) of papers

were contributed by multiple authors. United States is the top producing country with 100% publications of the total output.

Lokande and Sawant (2015) studied the authorship of Indian LIS literature. Under this study, it was

found that Indians are the largest contributors of LIS literature published from India, that nearly

entire LIS literature published from India is contributed by LIS fraternity only, and that, among all Indian authors of LIS literature published from India, share of Academic Librarians is larger than LIS

Faculty. Rajneesh and Rana (2015) made a citation analysis of Computer Science Literature. In this paper the analysis and evaluation of the citation behaviour and use pattern of computer scientists/researchers

has been carried out. This study shows that many important indicators pertaining to computer science literature relating to citation behaviour of computer science research. Borthakur and Sinha (2016) have studied the trends of publications by the scientists of NEIST, CSIR

Laboratary, Jorhat whereas Sinha and Singha (2016) comprehensively conducted a bibliometric

study of MLIS Dissertations submitted by Masters Students of Department of Library and Information Science , Assam University, Silchar during 2012-13 and found that Sinha, Manoj Kumar was most prolific one of the prolific authors with highest number of citations in the dissertations under the study.

3. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY The significance of the present study is to analyse the articles and citations given in the KELPRO BULLETIN published during 1997-2014. This study identifies year-wise distribution of articles,

authorship pattern, geographical distribution of articles, subject coverage of articles, rank list of authors of KELPRO Bulletin articles of a particular period, etc.

4. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The main objective of this paper is to examine the bibliometric pattern of the research papers

published in Kelpro Bulletin during 1997 to 2014 which has been undertaken considering the two aspects viz., Analysis of the Research papers/ Articles and Analysis of the Citations which have been

appended with each research paper and article: Analysis of Articles 1. To make an analysis of articles of KELPRO Bulletin published during 1997 to 2014;

5. To find out the Rank List of Cited Journals. 5. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY The present study has been conducted using eighteen volumes (vol. 1 to 18 ) containing 36 issues of KELPRO Bulletin published during the year 1997 to 2014, except vol. 10 (2) which was missing in the

Assam University Library. However, an attempt has been taken to collect the said issue but could not get success.

Quantitative Research Methodology has been applied in the present study which is Bibliometric study conducted into two parts:

Article Analysis

Citation Analysis 6. DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION 6.1. An Analysis of Articles In this case, all the details such as author(s), title, year of publication, pagination etc. of all articles

published during 1997 to 2014 were recorded for the following analysis. 6. A.1 Number of Articles Published during 1997-2014

The data as shown in Table-1 reveals that altogether a total number of 270 articles have been

published during the period 1997-2014 which have been collected and recorded for the present study. The result shown in Table-1 showed that the maximum number of articles published was in the year 1997(25) and a minimum number of articles (only eight number of articles) were published in the year 2006. The journal KELPRO Bulletin publishes average of 15 articles per year.

6. B.2 Authorship Pattern of Cited Journal / Papers The study results as shown in Table -10 reveals that out of 2017 citations the number of single authors

cited papers is maximum (1184 =58.7%) citations which are followed by double authors with 565 (28.01%) papers whereas 268 (13.29%) citations are from more than two authors papers.

The findings reveal that in LIS research, the LIS Professionals are writing research paper individually and there has been the least number of collaboration work. Therefore, the LIS Professionals should

collaborate in research which will help in producing high-quality research and more number of output will be produced.

6. B.3 Forms of Document Cited

The findings as shown in Table -11 showed that the majority of the authors preferred journals as the

source of information which occupied the top rank with the highest number of citations (2017 = 59.01%) of the total 3413 citations. The second rank is occupied by books with 571 (16.73%) citations. It is followed by others documents with 480 (14.06%), whereas the Seminars/Conference proceedings with 152 (4.45%), Reference books with 139 (4.07%) and Dissertations with 54 (1.58%) citations.

Therefore, based on the result of the Table- 11, it can be said that the dissertations have less number of citations. So, there is a need to make people aware to consult Theses and Dissertations for research. Table 11: Forms of Document Cited in Research Papers Published in Kelpro Bulletin (N = 3413)

7. CONCLUSION

After above observations, it may be concluded that the study is based on the analysis of articles and analysis of citations. The study reveals that the journal published the highest number of articles in the

year 1997and majority of the articles contain references. The maximum number of journal citations has been contributed by single author. The journal has published an average of 15 articles per year. In

this study, the maximum number of contributors are from single authors with 50.00%, which is followed by two authors with 41.8% and three authors with 7.41% and four authors with 0.74%.

The study shows that the most of the contributions are from India with 98.89%, while foreign contribution is very less. The majority of contributions appeared under Computer Application

77(28.52%). This study also reveals that Dr. S. Humayoon Kabir occupies the top rank by contributing the highest number of articles, 10 and then Prof. Manoj Kumar Sinha occupies the

second rank by contributing 7 articles. The majority of the articles (44.81%) have the length of 6-10 pages. Most of the contributors preferred journals as the source of information providing the highest

number of citations (59.01%). Annals of Library and Information Studies is the most cited and top-ranking journal with 106 citations. DESIDOC Bulletin of Information Technology occupies the second rank with 65 citations.
