A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF MAPS
OF
CIVIL WAR BATTLEFIELD AREAS
By Irwin Gottschall
INTRODUCTION
In the century that has elapsed since the Civil War, the curiosity and interest of countless persons have been captured by the drama and scope of that grave conflict. Every available scrap of information is eagerly sought and carefully kept. It is for the purpose of aiding this search for information that this bibliography is presented. It provides information on the availability of existing Government maps and charts covering areas in which the major Civil War battles took place, and was prepared in the Map Information Office of the United States Geological Survey.
The Map Information Office is maintained for the purpose of collecting, organizing, and distributing data about map coverage, aerial photography and geodetic control in the United States. It disseminates information about the activities and publications of the Federal mapping agencies, as well as some State and private organizations. Chief among this map information is that connected with the national topographic mapping program. The National Topographic Map Series is a term used to designate collectively the several quadrangle map series of the Nation. Each individual series is intended to fulfill a specific type of map requirement and is classified generally according to its publication scale. Large- scale maps (1:24,000, 1:30,000, and 1:31,680) are especially suitable for densely settled areas and other areas where similar map information is needed for engineering planning and similar purposes. Medium-scale maps (1:62,500 and 1:63,360) are considered adequate for general use where detailed planning is not contemplated. The national mapping program contemplates that maps at the scale of 1:62,500 will ultimately be available for all States except Alaska for which maps are being published at the scale of 1:63,360. Small-scale maps (1:125,000 and 1:250,000) cover large areas on a single sheet and are useful in planning statewide and nationwide projects.
In addition to information about mapping by the Geological Survey, the Map Information Office also catalogues information on maps and charts of all types made by other agencies. In the process of collecting, storing, and disseminating this body of map knowledge about our country, interesting by-product uses for map information frequently come to light. A bibliography of Civil War maps is believed to be of special interest during the current centennial commemoration of the war.
Only the major battles of the war have been considered in preparing this bibliography. There is no attempt to list maps of areas in which the countless skirmishes and small engagements took place. In many cases, the battlefields are not delineated on the maps but it is believed the user will encounter no difficulty in identifying the area of interest.
1
For easier reference to the included material, the map information is indexed by year and name of battle. The quadrangle maps for the area are first listed under the battle heading followed by the special maps and charts for the same area.
Among the special maps and charts are hydrographic charts which are helpful to the study of certain naval battles. Also included are some aeronautical charts available with out aeronautical overprint data. These are useful in that they cover large areas, even though topographic features are generalized.
It is realized that many users will be interested in obtaining topographic maps prepared during the war. Very few topographic maps were prepared by either side during the conflict. Information on the availability of photographic reproductions of out-of-print contemporary Civil War maps can be obtained from the. National Archives or the Library of Congress, Washington 25, D. C.
HOW TO OBTAIN MAPS AND CHARTS
The topographic quadrangle maps listed in this bibliography and published at scales varying from 1:21,120 to 1:125,000 may be obtained from the Geological Survey for 30 cents each. These maps range in size from 17 by 21 inches to 22 by 27 inches. Photostats of out-of-print quadrangles may be obtained for $1 each.
The quadrangles of the 1:250,000 scale series of United States topographic maps, the City and vicinity maps, and the various State maps may also be obtained from the Geological Survey for the prices stated.
Published quadrangle maps are shown on index circulars available for each State, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. These circulars are supplied free on request. The base map in each circular shows the outlines of all mapped quadrangles and gives their names, survey dates, and the publishing agency (if not the Geological Survey). The circulars also contain lists of special maps and sheets with their prices, addresses of map reference libraries, map agents, and Federal map-distribution centers.
Mail orders for maps of any area may be addressed to the Geological Survey, Distribution Section, Washington 25, D. C. Maps of areas west of the Mississippi River (including all of Louisiana and Minnesota) may be ordered from the Geological Survey, Distribution Section, Federal Center, Denver 25, Colorado. Order by map name, State, and series, and specify whether the maps are desired with or without woodland overprint. A discount of 20 percent is allowed on orders of $10 or more, and 40 percent on orders of $60 or more, based on the retail price. Each order should be accompanied by the exact payment in cash (at the sender's risk) or money order or personal check made payable to the Geological Survey. A sales outlet is maintained in the Geological Survey office: Room 1028 General Services Administration Building, Washington, D. C.
The hydrographic and aeronautical charts may be obtained from the Coast and Geodetic Survey, Department of Commerce, Washington 25, D. C., and plastic relief models of the 1:250,000 scale maps may be obtained from the Army Map Service, 6500 Brooks Lane, Washington 25, D. C., for the prices stated. Prepayment is required in each case.
Further information pertaining to Federal maps may be obtained from the Map Informa tion Office, Geological Survey, Washington 25, D. C.
