1. Library and Information SciencesPerhaps I’m a little biased, but I love the books about Library and Information Sciences from Purdue University Press. I can catch up on conference proceedings, learn about copyright and stay current on the evolution of libraries all through this one collection. Authors, librarians, publishers and vendors can all learn something from these useful texts.

3. Health and Human SciencesThe Health and Human Sciences books have fascinating crossover with the Veterinary Science books. I learned about how owning a pet can not only help you get healthy from the daily walks and games of fetch, but also improve your mental health and happiness through the therapeutic benefits. There are even stories about what it’s like to go through life with a Seeing Eye dog.

2. Technology and EngineeringWhen I was a kid, my dolls were transported everywhere via Caterpillar vehicles. The iconic engines are enough to give any kid a nostalgic adoration of construction vehicles. The textbooks in the Technology and Engineering collection are the perfect way to translate that childhood interest into adult knowledge. From demolition to recovery, there’s a book to cover every part of the building process.

Over the past 50 years, the Purdue University Press has cultivated a reputation for publishing high-quality writing about scholarly topics. Though they are most well known for their scientific topics, the Press also publishes books on philosophy, business, literature and more. Additionally, vibrant local histories of Purdue University and Lafayette, Indiana, where the University and Press are based, round up a strong history collection.

1. Destination EverywhereI found Destination Alaskan Cruise when I was preparing for a family vacation, and since then, this series has been my go-to for every trip I need to plan. Each location, domestic or international, has pages of fun activities, delicious restaurants and magnificent hotels. There are plenty of ideas to choose from, and I’ve yet to be disappointed by a recommendation from the Destination series.

3. Health, Medicine & ScienceAlternative and traditional medicine books share strategies for healing patients. I learned a lot through these books about Alzheimer’s, brain health, sleep strategies—and even the physics that explains everyday phenomena. Even though I don’t know all the scientific jargon, these books were written in a way that made me able to understand the complex ideas and theories.

2. Cooking & LifestyleThis Collection contains tips, tricks, recipes and advice for all types of lifestyle problems. From connecting with your body through yoga to being a better mother or father through parenting tips, these books are valuable resources. I tried out the cookbooks for my kids, and they loved the tasty twists on their favorite dishes.

Everyone, everywhere has one thing in common: we all have to eat. Even in the most tense times, food bonds us. Rebecca Sharpless knows this better than anyone, and she shares her knowledge in Cooking in Other Women’s Kitchens: Domestic Workers in the South, 1865 —1960. Sharpless focuses on the way cooking acted as a bridge for African American women who were freed but segregated. Moving from the country to the city, transitioning from the field to the kitchen, African American women of this time lived lives where there were no precedents set for day-to-day living. They made their own way and, in the process, paved the way for others to find work in places unimaginable

for them mere decades before—manufacturing, clerical and professional jobs.Sharpless focuses on how women like her had considerable influence on Southern cuisine and, by extension, culture, and I certainly see that to be true in my Southern town today. Another thing I loved about the way Sharpless approached this fascinating topic was that she supplemented her own narrative with diverse primary sources, like old photographs, diary entries, cookbooks, letters and oral histories.
