    1. "Scripture" and "Tradition" are notopposedto each other; "Scripture is

part of the larger reality called"Tradition, which is itself part of thelarger process called "Revelation"

    2. Although the Bible is obviously a very

old and crucial part of the Church'sTradition, handing on God'sRevelation, it is not the only part.

    3. No other revelations would ever

change or contradict what Godteaches us in and through theOld and New Testaments.

REMEMBER:As Roman Catholics, we are not a Religion ofthe WORDS (the Book) but we are a Religionof the WORD OF GOD (Christ). The Word ofGod, in Catholic understanding, is notprimarily the Bible, but is JESUS CHRIST.

The Catholic Faith is built up by numerousSacred Traditions gathered and accepted bycenturies of pious devotion

As it is written in the Last Chapter of theGospel ofJohn (Not all is written aboutJesus for if it will be done, it would fill thespaces of the world.)

    books. According to the

Author of the BibleThe Bible is inspired by God. Inspired

coming from the Latin word Espiritu. The

Bible then is inspired by the Holy Spirit(DIVINE), thus making it the Word of God.

The Bible is still a form of LITERATURE,

written by men, but men can be corrupted

therefore, it is the Holy Spirit that speaks /writes in the Scriptures (affirms the

    Pentecost Event). Dei Verbum (28)

2 Timothy 3:16, "all Scripture is inspired of God."

    The Bible as Literature

The Bible is not asingle book but acollection of

    books.Within the Bible,

    there are many

    books, written bydifferent authors,following differentgenres.

    28/47

    The Genre as Key toInterpretation

Knowing the genre of a particular bookor passage is the first step tointerpreting it properly.

When we know that we are dealingwith a psalm, for example, we have anidea that it will be full of symbolisms.

Common sense will tell us not tointerpret these symbols literally.Example: The Lord is my rock

Some are formal in nature (e.g., Romans andHebrews), while others are quite personal(e.g., 2 Corinthians, 2 Timothy, and Philemon).
