#199- The Transfiguration
Matthew 17:1-13
Matthew 16:28
• Jesus Transfigured on the Mount
• 28 “Assuredly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”
Matthew 17:1-13
• 1 Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; 2 and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.
Matthew 17:1-13
• 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. 4 Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
Matthew 17:1-13
• 5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” 6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid.
Matthew 17:1-13
• 7 But Jesus came and touched them and said, “Arise, and do not be afraid.” 8 When they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.
• 9 Now as they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man is risen from the dead.”
Matthew 17:1-13
• 10 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
• 11 Jesus answered and said to them, “Indeed, Elijah is coming first and will restore all things.
Matthew 17:1-13
• 12 But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him but did to him whatever they wished. Likewise the Son of Man is also about to suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them of John the Baptist.
Drawings of the characters in the Transfiguration scene…
And the most important character: Jesus!
A picture of Jesus during the transfiguration…
What, did you miss it?Let’s see that again!(on the next slide)
Awesome picture eh? As bright as the sun!
Moses Jesus Elijah
Moses Jesus ElijahLaw Bright like sun Prophets
Luke tells us that they were talking about Jesus’ death
God said to hear Jesus, showing that Jesus has greater authority
Some not taste death before see Son of Man coming?
Some not taste death before see Son of Man coming?
Elijah has not died yet
He was taken up by a chariot of fire straight to God
But he will die before Jesus’ second coming
“Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
• Old prophecy in the book of Malachi– Before the Lord comes, Elijah will turn the
hearts of people to the God of their fathers
• Was the prophecy incorrect?– NO! The prophecy is correct!
Two comings of Jesus (the Messiah)
• 1st coming– In humiliation– Die on the cross– Time: About 2,000 years ago
• 2nd coming– In glory– Establish the kingdom of God– Time: Nobody knows, but look forward to it!
Before 1st coming of Jesus…
• John the Baptist represents Elijah• Luke 1
– 13 But the angel said to [Zacharias], “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John…
– 17 He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah… to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
• Note: He is not Elijah, he only represents Elijah
Before 2nd coming of Jesus…
• Elijah will come back• Malachi 4
– 5 "See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes. 6 He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse."
• However, this time he will die after he has finished his duty
#200- Jesus and the Children
Mark 10:13-16
Mark 10:13-16
• Jesus Blesses Little Children
• 13 Then they brought little children to Him, that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked those who brought them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, He was greatly displeased and said to them, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God.
Mark 10:13-16
• 15 Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” 16 And He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them.
• Jesus loves everybody, especially the little children
• They are VERY IMPORTANT to Jesus
• So important, that Jesus said…
Matthew 18:6
• “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.”
What is a millstone???
THIS is a millstone…!
…
…wow…
…that’s really big…
Take heed when you lead children!
Directing children to Jesus
• Should be done as soon as they are able to understand his words

Passed away due to leukemia
Leukemia is a cancer of the blood, or bone marrow
He suffered through such a terrible condition
He was only 4 ½ years old
But through it all, it seems like he understood…
That Jesus loves him
• We must receive the kingdom of God as little children
• Does NOT mean we have to BE children in order to believe in Jesus
• Means we have to be LIKE children and submit to Jesus with humility just like children should submit to their parents– Humility means being
humble, the opposite of being proud
May God richly bless youmy friend
