Proverbs on Haughtiness and Humility (2nd)

The fear of the Lord teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor. (15:33)Before his downfall a mans heart is proud, but humility comes before honor. (18:12)

A mans pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honor. (29:23)

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge (Proverbs 1:7); The fear of the Lordthe beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10, Psalm 111:10)it stands to reason that the f

ofthe Lord (reverential trust, loving respect, awe) serves us well as a divine teacher We fear God as the One who gives us righteous, eternal and perfect laws (Psalm 119:14

160, James 1:25), but also we also fear cutting ourselves off from a loving Father who

grace overcomes sin (Romans 5:20) and whose mercy triumphs over judgment (James 2:

On one hand we fear a righteous judge because of his powerful position, but relationally fear offending a perfect Father who has demonstrated His love for us (Romans 5:8)

Just as a reverence, love, awe, and respect for a holy God leads us into personal knowledof Him, so that same humble spirit leads us to receiving the honor that only God can bestow

The principle in all three of these proverbs is that humility is a prerequisite for honor Humble yourself before the Lord and He will lift your up (James 4:10)

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Better to be lowly in spirit aamong the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud. (16:18-19)

The Lord detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: they will not go unpunished. (16:5)

Just as humility leads to divinely bestowed honor, so pride leads to destruction and a fal Of course it is better to be lowly in spirit among the oppressed for that humble spirit w

    be blessed of God

As Jesus taught: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (Mt 5: Even if there is a temporal advantage to sharing plunder with the proud, there is timmediate disapproval of God and the eventual destruction that follows the arrogant in hea God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6, Proverbs 3:34)

Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice. (13:10)Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. (15:22)

Pride not only separates us from God, but breeds quarrel with others as James teaches what causes fights and quarrels among you (James 4:1)? Selfishness, envy, and pride

When a humble heart is open to the advice of others, wisdom is the result

Rather than plans failing for lack of counsel, instead your plans will be established (16:3

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth. Let anoth

praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips. (27:1-2)

The proud of heart arrogantly assumes he controls the future, yet those who have thumility that comes from wisdom (James 3:13) understand only God has ultimate control

To those who think they are in charge, James says: You dont know what will happtomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a while then vanishes (4:14)

The arrogant will boast and brag (James 4:16), yet the wise man is reliant upon Goaffirmation rather than mans (Acts 5:29, Galatians 1:10, I Thessalonians 2:4)

If there is to be praise, he waits for it to come from someone else and not his own mouth
