Venkatasubbiah, the well known littérateur and lexicographer. He was speaking after releasing the illustrated 122-page volume at the Bhavan on November 14. Dr. Bharadwaj who was present at the function, opined that there has not been any concerted effort in interpreting ‘Dharma’ properly. That is why the country is today facing evils like terrorism. He said that his book was an effort to fill the void. He explained how India was an ancient country with continuous spiritual tradition dating back to 5000 years. Inevitably, those following different faiths will have to learn to swim together as one people’, he declared. book under release, said that thebook in a nutshell gives thetimeless cultural and spirituallegacy of India, nurtured by sagesof ancient times and MahatmaGandhi in our own times. Theauthor succinctly describes thisevolution of concepts of unity indiversity he said, paying glowingtributes to Dr. Bharadwaj whohas come out with such aninvaluable book.

Earlier, Sri N Ramanuja,who welcomed the chiefguests, profoundly thanked theGovernor for selecting Bhavanfor the launch of his book.Sri A Krishnamurthy, Secretaryproposed a vote of thanks.

Dr. Mathoor Krishnamurti,the Director of Bhavan, whocompeered the programme, notedthat the book was pricedat Rs.500. But he askedDr. Bharadwaj for the prize atwhich he expected it to be sold.

Pat came the Governor’sreply: ‘so far I have authored fourbooks, but none of them haveI sold for money. Even in thiscase, I am willing to give it freeto the interested’.

Accordingly, the Governorhanded over a copy each to thepersons present shaking handswith each!

The highlight of theinaugural of Bhavanotsava 2009to mark the 40th anniversary ofthe Bangalore Kendra of Bhavan,was the release of two morevolumes in Kannada of the100-volume works of MahatmaGandhi.

The stupendous task ofediting the massive output ofGandhi’s writings published bythe Union Government has beenundertaken by Dr.MeenakshiDeshpande Mahishi under thetitle ‘Mahatma Gandhi KrithiSanchaya’. Volume Nos 14 and15 were released on that festiveoccasion on November 15, 2009.

Senior freedom fighter SriH S Doreswamy who releasedVolume No. 14 observed that the

youth of the country shoulddevelop the spirit of fighting theproblems that are plaguing thecountry, by finding solutions tothem in the Gandhian way.

He, however, regretted thatinstead of finding solutions onthe basis of Gandhiji’sprinciples, the tendency todayseems to be to blow up smallproblems. It is here that the youthhas to play its positive role, headded.

Sri Manu Baligar, Directorof the Directorate of Kannadaand Culture, who releasedVolume 15 strongly contendedthat following Gandhianprinciples was the only way tosolve problems facing societytoday. He complemented

Chief Editor of the series,Dr. Meena Deshpande observedthat following Gandhianprinciples was the best solutionto overcome clashes betweenindividuals as also betweencommunities.

She went on to explain howthe translation job is importantfor conveying lofty Gandhianideals to the youth of the countryso that they can apply them intheir day to day life.

The newly constructedSchool at Sriramapuram, which iscoming up under the jointauspices of the Bhavan and BBMPis fast getting ready. The groundfloor which is almost completed,is all set for the classes to functionin the next academic year.

This assurance was given toSri Suresh Kumar, State Ministerfor Law and Parliamentary Affairsby the Architect and contractor ofthe school on Nov. 19, 2009 whenthe minister visited the spot.

He was accompanied by SriV.P. Ikkeri, Joint Commissioner(West) of BBMP and Sri Remesh,Chief Executive Engineer. SriSuresh Kumar was told that thesecond and third floors would alsobe ready by June 2010.

BHAVAN’S BBMP SCHOOL ALL AGOG

Sri Suresh Kumar who washappy at the progress made on thebuilding hoped that similarschools in the Joint venture of theBhavan will become possible inBellary, Belgaum, Mysore andDavanagere, Mangalore.

The need for an innovativeand creative approach to findsolutions to a plethora ofproblems facing the country wasunderscored by Sri Anil Gokak,IAS (Retd) at the 40th

convocation of the Bhavan’s H BCollege of Communication andManagement on October 28,2009. The college offersPG Diploma under the Bhavan’sRajendra Prasad Instituteof Communication andManagement, Mumbai.

Delivering his convocationaddress, Sri Gokak who is aformer Secretary to the Uniongovernment said the complexityof these problems as well as thoserelating to the daunting povertyalleviation defy simplisticsolutions, especially when people

are getting increasingly restlessdue to rising expectations.

Congratulating the graduatesof the year on their success in theexamination and embarking ontheir voyage of a ‘life-longexamination of life itself ’,Sri Gokak explained how Indianeconomy and its corporate sectorwere meeting with the twinchallenges of liberalization andglobalization with success. Yet itcan’t be said that all the problemsare solved. Among them he listedthose relating to erosion ofvalues, illiteracy, health andnaxalism. These he said, can betackled only with innovation andcreativity.

Sri Gokak said that in thistask the expertise they hadacquired in their study, should be

of immense value. This, againcan be done by identifying waysand means to prepare a road mapfor the country’s innovativenessand creativity. All that remainsfor them is to see how best theywould avail the services of thegovernment and the publicservices.

Before Sri Gokak deliveredhis well thought out essay, hedistributed the diplomacertificates to the successfulcandidates. He profusely thankedthe college management forgiving him the privilege ofaddressing a gathering on theoccasion of its annualconvocation.

Sri N Ramanuja, Chairman,Bhavan Karnataka, presided overthe function. Dr.MathoorKrishnamurti Director and Sri AKrishnamurthy, Secretary, gracedthe occasion with their presence.Prof S N Subba Roa, Principalproposed vote of thanks.

Among the medal winners inthe PG Diploma examination, thename of N Vijayalakshmi of‘Industrial Relations andPersonnel Management’ standsout. She secured the first rank atthe all India level, doing proudboth to herself and her AlmaMater. Here is our heartycongratulations and best wishesfor a bright future for her.

The urgent need for policymakers to focus on improvingstandards of science andtechnology so as to minimizeimport cost of industrialcomponents as also to broadbase the skill based talent poolwas stressed by Prof C N R Rao,National Research Professorand Chairman ScientificAdvisory Council to the PrimeMinister, in a talk at the Bhavanon November 1, 2009.

Prof. Rao was speakingafter launching ‘Chronicle ofNavaratna: the BEL story’, abook by Dr. C R Subramanian,former Chairman and Managing

Director of Bharat Electricals(BEL). Besides the authorhimself, the function at theBhavan’s Khincha auditoriumwas graced by Sri N Ramanuja,Chairman, Bhavan Karnataka,Prof V K Atre, former ScientificAdvisor to the Defense Ministryand Dr. Vinod Sharma,Chairman, Department ofC o m m u n i c a t i o n a n dEngineering, IISc., Bangalore.

candidates to succeed retiringexperts. He said he had beenasked by the Prime Minister tosuggest suitable persons forpremier establishments likethe Atomic EngineeringCommission, citing the exampleof scouting for a successor to theAtomic Energy CommissionChairman, Dr. Anil K Kodkar.

Prof. Rao while assertingthat there was no lack of fundsfor research in science andtechnology, pointed out that‘what we are facing isdifficulty in finding talent’ ifwe had to compare ourselveswith countries like China, SouthKorea and Japan.

He came down heavily onour Defence Ministry as also theUnion Government for beingcontent with mere dividendsinstead of allowing publicsector giants to tread the path ofself reliance for their growth.

Mr V K Atre endorsed ProfRao’s views about talentshortage in the country. He

stressed the need for the countryto maintain a positive outlookand go ahead with the goodwork that has been done so far.

The book by one who hadfirst hand knowledge from thevery beginning of BEL, one ofthe giant public sector units ofthe country, gives us insightwith the way it grew up toattain the status of aNavaratna company. Itunfolds how it overcameobstacles to evolve on a majorelectric company, meeting theneeds of both the defence andcivil sections.

Earlier, after renderingthe invocation, Dr. MathoorKrishnamurti, Director,welcomed the gathering. Sri CR Subramaniam, the author,introduced the chief guests andgave a gist of the book slated forrelease.

It is deplorable that neitherthe State Government nor itsworld of music at large had doneanything to perpetuate thememory of Smt. BangaloreNagaratnamma, a Savant ofyesteryears, observed Sri. A.S.Chandramouli, Deputy Directorof Doordarshan Kendra,Bangalore at a function underSusruthi Ramiah SubramanianEndowment at the Bhavan onNovember 18, 2009.

Sri Chandramouli wasspeaking after releasing“Anjali”, a monograph on thelife and works of Smt.Nagaratnamma who was anexponent of music andBharthanatya. The book is atoken of appreciation of Smt.Janaki Subramanian, a disciple ofSmt. Nagaratnamma.

Sri Chandramouli agreedthat this lapse was due to the lackof authentic material on thesubject. He congratulated Smt.Janaki Subramanian for fillingthe void with this. Illustratedbook in Kannada, Tamil andEnglish. The book gives a briefaccount of the noble woman’slast days of life when the authorwas her student.

It may be mentioned inthis connection that it wasNagaratnamma to whom thecredit for creating an edifice toSaint Sri Tyagaraja, one ofthe trinities of Carnatic musicgoes. She had lavished all herbelongings, including a vastcollection of jewelry and a housein Sowcarpet of Chennai on the

monument Carnatic musiciansthe world over annuallycongregate at this sacred Samadiof Tyagaraja to pay homage to thesaint singer. They gratefullyremember Nagaratnamma on thatoccasion at her own samadiwhich is erected in the samevicinity.

It is equally worth while torecall that the State SangeetNritya Academy had given itsaward to Nagaratnamma in 1967.The citation issued on theoccasion is in the name of

Nanjangud Nagaratnamma (theprefix changed after she settleddown in Bangalore), throws lighton her life and contribution to theworld of music. Also an old issueof “India Today”, the newsfortnightly and the memoirs ofDVG provide adequate sourcematerial on her noble life.

Smt. Janaki Subramanianwhile proposing a vote of thanks,said she was grateful to theBhavan for annually organizinga programme to keep Smt.Nagaratnamma’s memory alive.
