THE SUNKENBUILTFORMIS INFLUENCEDBY THE SUBTERRANEAN ARCHITECTURE SEEN IN WESTERN PART OFINDIA(E.G.. STEP WELLS OFGUJARAT, ROCK-CUT TEMPLES OF AJANTA- ELLORA).DIFFERENT ELEMENTS LIKE THE SKYLIGHTFOLLOWS THE SAMEFORMUSED IN THE SALVACAO CHURCH. THESE LOW LIGHTING RESPOND TO THE DOMES ACROSS THE WATER AS WELL AS BEING RUSTICDESCENDANTS OF LE-CORBUSIER LIGHT FUNNEL AT CHANDIGARH.THEFOUNTAIN AT THE ENTRANCECOURT REFERSBACK TO THE ARCHITECTURE OFTHE REGION. THE FORMAL AND SPATIAL CHARACTER RE-EMPHASIZES THEPRINCIPLES OFSPACE -MAKING AS OBSERVED IN THE OLD CITY OF BHOPAL AND ALSO TYPICAL OFAN ISLAMIC CITY - FORMAL GEOMETRY AND THE ORTHOGONAL ARRANGEMENT OFSPACESDESIGN CONCEPTSThe FormThe organization is in theform of clusters grouped together considering their degree of formality and participation. The enclosed areas are grouped around the sunkencourtyards and sits on varied plinths respecting the site contours and terracesabove.Thebuilding is organized on regularformal squaremodules. The, organization follows the gradual slope ofthe site and the functionsare interlocked by joining the different levels

Eachpart ofthe building is distinct, yet flows easily into one another limb meandering paths. The approachto the artscentrefrom main road on the North-West Side, being on ahigher levelfromthe site, hell wholesite to be viewed without any disturbance. It gives a vista to the lakepanoramicview ofthe city. The long steps lead down to the internal courtyards fromthe entrance. Themovement through different activities opens up on terraces and encounters nature. The movementis based on shifting of the axes through the different levels within the building.

Scale and ProportionScale &Proportion ofthebuilding are very human in nature. The creation of simplecalm spaces is done by using appropriate scales, proportions& sensitive treatment to the walls.Entrance to the courtyard is made just byextending a horizontal band across two builtmasses, whichgives a sense of entering. The individual squaremodule is repeatedforms a larger institutional scale. The size of courtyard and thebuiltmass around are proportional and provide comfortable spaces.

Nature of SpacesThe plan generates two different kind of spaces: open - to - sky and enclosed.Spaces are calmin nature.Themovement leads to the lake through activities where space penetrates into eachother and has a visual transparency fromwithin&outside. The plazacreatedby the different terraces is very publicin nature.Thefunctions spatially linked to thecourtyards, inner volume changes according to the site conditions and requirements of thefunctions.
