5CONTENTS

WelcomeAs ever we’re indulging ourselves in this issue of bh Exclusive.

For starters there’s a celebration of the very best of British style from Lulu Guinness’ quirky bags to covetable Bremont watches, who are launching the distinctive limited edition P51 with propeller style hands, and iconic institution Mappin & Webb.

We’ve also discovered a prestigious kitchen business, Kitchen & Bathroom Haven, who are at the forefront of a resurgence in British manufacturing, creating bespoke, individual, quality kitchens and furniture from new purpose-built facilities in Ringwood.

We’re impressed, too, by another local business, Kingspace, who are redefining the outdoor space for entertaining and enjoying all-year-round - whatever the weather. And with heat-waves in spring and autumn, I’m all for that.

With an eye on hosting the Olympics’ water sports games further down the coast, we turn our attention to all that our own waters have to offer, including picturesque Poole Harbour and the spectacular Jurassic Coastline. The newest addition to our local marinas, Port of Poole Marina, is the perfect spot from which to set sail.

Meanwhile Sarah Jessica Parker takes time out to reveal how she manages to juggle family and work. And could there be another Sex and the City movie?

If you want time out, then what about putting on the Ritz in Madrid?

Closer to home, have a scoff at The New Forest’s latest acclaimed eaterie, The Pig, with a menu dedicated to its kitchen garden, Forest foraging and local produce from sea and land.

If it’s total zone-out relaxation you’re after, enjoy sensational The Spa at Pennyhill Park Hotel in Surrey – the main pool even has underwater music!

In I don’t Know how She does It, Sarah Jessica Parker finally swaps the sassy single girl role for that of a working wonder-mum. But self-confessed Sex and the City fan Susan Griffin discovers there’s no saying goodbye to Carrie Bradshaw

Sarah Jessica Parker is looking anxious. You wouldn’t expect it considering we’re talking about her toddling twin daughters having the

ultimate wardrobe to raid.Leaning in, the petite actress says: “the thing is,

I’m afraid that one of them will be quite tall. I know it sounds crazy, but my father’s six foot and I don’t know what’s going to happen. there’s going to be this terrible imbalance.”

At the suggestion that the longer-legged twin could inherit the handbag collection instead, a wide smile spreads across her face and she clasps her hands together with what looks like unmitigated relief.

“Oh yes, the handbags!” It’s very Carrie Bradshaw, the Sex and the City character for which SJP is synonymous.

For six years, 12 if you include the two movies, fans have followed Carrie’s happiness and heartache. we cooed over the clothes and celebrated with a cocktail when she finally wed her true love (Big, as if you didn’t know) while her relationship column became an ode to single girls the world over.

It’s little surprise that so many women think they know Sarah Jessica Parker.

“Carrie’s always with me, it’s just the way it’s going to be after 12 years,” she says, her small frame dwarfed by the dimensions of the sofa she’s perched on.

She is wearing a delicate lilac dress, matching pointed heels and a bright yellow jacket that shouldn’t work, but somehow does. her long hair is loose and wavy, her make-up is natural and her piercing blue eyes have the faintest hint of lines around their edges.

It’s the sort of beauty that’s approachable and

attainable, which is a huge part of SJP’s appeal.tellingly, for someone of her status, there’s no

entourage. She talks openly about her home life in New York with Matthew Broderick, 49, her husband of 14 years, and children, James wilkie, eight, and twins tabitha and Loretta, who were born via a surrogate two years ago.

her latest role is a move away from her fabulous single girl about town persona. I don’t Know how She does It sees SJP playing Kate reddy, a wife, mother, career woman and juggler par excellence. Based on a novel by welsh journalist Allison Pearson, it pulls back the curtain on the juggling act known as ‘having it all’.

“what’s impressive is the book was published 10 years ago and it’s more relevant today, in this economic climate, than it was then. I don’t know if that’s prescient or just unbelievable,” she says in a girly voice that belies her 46 years.

“there are things in it that are familiar to me, and I also knew it was a story that’d resonate with women all over the world.”

A famous actress and multi-millionaire, you wonder whether SJP can truly relate to the average working woman. But first and foremost she’s a wife and mother.

“I have enormous concerns about my children’s health, education, wellbeing; the kind of foods they eat, culture they’re exposed to and their faith in themselves.

“these are the things mothers all over the globe worry about and ponder late at night.”

In more recent years, there has been something of a post-feminist backlash to the notion of being able to “have it all”, but SJP believes you should strive as if you can.

“I wOrKed IN AdIFFereNt tIMe.BeING A GreAtACtOr ANd MerItwAS everYthING.It wASN’t ABOutBeING rIChOr FAMOuS.”

“It’s a more satisfying destination than resigning yourself to some place in the middle; a mediocre halfway point,” she says. “But I’m also realistic about what can and can’t be achieved in a day, let alone a year.”

She was only eight when her showbiz career began with a tv movie, and 19 when she made a memorable appearance in 1984’s Footloose opposite Kevin Bacon. But there are no regrets about starting out so young.

“No, I’m glad I did,” she says. “I had great experiences. I worked in a different time when the emphasis was entirely different. Being a great actor and merit was everything. It wasn’t about being rich or famous, it was simply about hard work. I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything.”

According to reports, James wilkie has aspirations of following in his parents’ footsteps. SJP has “mixed” feelings about this: “I hope he pursues it with seriousness if it’s what he wants to do. the only rule is he has to go and finish a four-year college course - then he can do whatever he wants.”

today, she remains stoical about being one of the world’s most famous faces.

the school run, for example, finds her trailed by paparazzi eager to sell images of the style queen looking less than picture perfect.

“there’s not a lot you can do. You’re a mother, so you dress appropriately for the weather and in a way that doesn’t embarrass drop-off, and that’s it.

“If you have a zit, you try and cover it. You put on a big hat and some sunglasses, and hope that camouflages the little bit of a wreck you are.”

But with the lows come the highs, says SJP, as she recalls a recent trip to Moscow. As a former ballet student, she was desperate to see the Bolshoi theatre.

“I’ve heard about it my entire life. It’s the birthplace of so much of what I admire about the world of ballet.” Only she discovered it was closed for renovation work.

“I was just hanging around and then I heard some of the workers say ‘Sarah Jessica Parker’, and I was able to get inside,” she says. “I recognise that I probably wouldn’t have been able to do that if I had been a civilian, so there are wonderful things that have happened to me because I’ve been part of something that’s been meaningful to people.”

And that brings us nicely back to the subject of Sex and the City and whether it is true a third film is in the pipeline. the second movie may have been mauled by the critics, but it was still a box office smash and the fans will always crave more Carrie and co.

“very casually a couple of years ago, Michael [Patrick King, the executive producer] mentioned an idea which I thought was very good. It’s definitely something I would want to do if we ever revisited,” she says, those eyes twinkling again. “It would be great. But that would be the last...”

10 BREMONT WATCHES

P-51

Quintessentially British luxury watches

Bremont at Justice, winchester

Bremont watch company launched its collection in 2007, offering a range of highly-developed timepieces of exceptional quality.

they’re available at Justice in winchester, which specialises in British designer jewellery and exclusive swiss-made watch brands.

although Bremont watches are made using only the finest quality swiss components and are hand-assembled by skilled watchmakers in a dedicated atelier in Biel-Bienne, they contain something which no comparable timepiece can match: an air of quintessential Britishness derived from the background of the brand’s founders, brothers nick and Giles english. in addition all the design of the watches and case finishing takes place in the uK.

the english brothers are professional aviators who have lived in and around aircraft since childhood. their father, euan english, a talented engineer and raF aerobatic champion and display pilot, inspired their passion for the world of aviation, and the Bremont watch collection very much reflects this in both design and functionality.

Part of the impetus to create the first Bremont watch stemmed, perhaps surprisingly, from gratitude. euan english lost his life in a flying accident, but his elder son, nick, who was flying with him, was spared, although he sustained multiple injuries in the crash.

the following year nick and Giles were back in the air, flying across France in a 60-year-old plane, when bad weather forced them to make an emergency landing in a pea field in the champagne region.

as fate would have it the field was owned by a former world war ii pilot who, despite his considerable age, remained as passionate about aircraft as nick and

Giles. he was equally passionate about horology and wore a particularly special wristwatch – one given to him by his father. with his passions exactly mirroring those of the brothers, his name, antoine Bremont, was chosen to grace a new family of watches.

it took five years of research and development to take the first series of Bremont watches from drawing board to reality.

From the outset the brothers were determined to produce watches of exceptional quality. stainless-steel cases are nine times as durable as average watch cases, and an arduous chronometer certification process ensures accuracy levels of 99.998 per cent.

the high standard of finish extends to a hand-cut and engraved winding rotor and sapphire crystal case backs, with no more than 1,000 examples of each model produced annually.

and, as would be expected, every Bremont watch is accurate and durable enough to be used for activities ranging from flying to yachting to mountaineering.

each model has been tried and quantified in the field by professional adventurers, including actors ewan McGregor and charley Boorman, mountaineer Bear Grylls, round-the-world yachtsman Mike Golding, everest climber Jake Meyer and, of course, aviators nick and Giles english and their fellow aviation professionals, including pilots of the elite us naval test Pilot school.

this commitment to quality has not gone unnoticed. in its launch year Bremont was recognised as a Brand of tomorrow by walpole, which supports the British luxury industry across the world. and this year Bremont was awarded uK watch Brand of the year 2011 at the uK Jewellery awards.

11BREMONT WATCHES

The BremonT Familyinitially the Bremont watch family comprised three chronograph models: the alt1-c, the alt1-Z and the alt1-P. these were followed by the supermarine diver’s watch, which maintains Bremont’s aviation Dna, and the Bremont MB, designed and built with the aim of becoming the definitive aviation chronometer in the market-place.

alT1-Cthe alt1-c contains a specially modified Be-50ae self-winding movement inside a 43mm-diameter case. it has a classic chronograph layout with subdials at the three and nine o’clock positions, and has been designed to offer exceptional visual clarity with all data available at a glance. water-resistant to 10 atM. £3,945

alT1-Pthe alt1-P, with the Be-54ae self-winding movement, is the perfect choice for professional aviators with its superluminova c3 hands and dial markings, an internal rotating bezel and three subdials. water-resistant to 10 atM. £3,695

alT1-Z the alt1-Z is a utc (universal time co-ordinated) self-winding wristwatch with an automatic Be-53ae movement, dual time-zone display, three subdials, luminous markings and an internal rotating bezel. water-resistant to 10 atM. £3,835

SuPermarine S500 the supermarine s500 maintains the Bremont aviation Dna by encasing the beautifully finished chronometer-tested movement in an anti-magnetic Faraday cage. the Be-36ae movement is further protected by a patented anti-shock case mount. the 43mm-diameter case is water-resistant to 50 atM and a sapphire bezel offers extraordinary luminosity in low light conditions. £3,545

mBi & mBii the MBi and MBii have been tested and designed in conjunction with iconic British aviation company Martin-Baker who supply 70 per cent of the world’s air-forces with fighter ejection seat technology. indeed, the watch had to withstand the same rigorous testing as the seats themselves and the movement is protected by an anti-magnetic Faraday cage and an anti-shock case mount designed to withstand the MB ejection seat test programme. the MBi is only available to individuals who have ejected using a Martin-Baker ejection seat. water-resistant to 10atM. £3,195

limiTed ediTion P-51 the limited edition P-51 is a chronograph chronometer built with original parts from the famous 1944 Mustang world war ii aircraft P-51K-10 (serial number 44-12016), a Pacific war veteran also known as ‘Fragile but agile’. Original aluminium metal from the aircraft fuselage is integrated into both the dial and the movement of the timepiece, while the dial itself is inspired by the clocks found in the P-51 aircraft. the 43mm hardened steel case integrates a rotating roto-click inner bezel that houses four ball bearings. Only 251 pieces will be created. £7,450

Solo the solo, inspired by the classic pilots’ watches from the 1940s, is powered by the modified Be-36ae movement and housed in the classic Bremont 43mm trip-tick three-piece case, hardened in the uK to over 2000 Vickers making the case over seven times more scratch-resistant than normal watch-grade steel. the domed sapphire crystal has nine layers of hardened anti-reflective coating to each side. water-resistant to 10atM. £2,550

Justice the JewellersBremont’s attention to style, quality and design made it an obvious choice for Justice, joining its select ranges of quality swiss movement watches, such as hermès, and British designer jewellery, including jewellery designers shaun leane, stephen webster and Fei liu.

the launch of Bremont’s limited edition P-51 watch coincides with the expansion of Justice in Parchment street, winchester, with a dedicated watch gallery and bespoke design suite opening soon.

16 RIT Z MADRID

Putting on the RitzSimon and Sarah Rodway spend a luxurious weekend in Madrid

17RIT Z MADRID

18 RIT Z MADRID

early in the 20th century King Alfonso Xiii of Spain returned from his travels in europe with his mind filled with memories.

the young king had been royally entertained, enjoying a procession of fountains, parks, royal suites and blue skies, and brought back with him new ideas and projects for his capital.

Madrid had always been a city of intense vitality, noble buildings, wide plazas and exquisite gardens, but somehow it lacked something. the king was the first to realise how much his capital would gain by the addition of a hotel of the same category as the Ritz in Paris or the Carlton in Cannes, and he wasted no time in putting his ideas into practice.

he believed Madrid should provide something really exceptional: a hotel to satisfy the tastes of the most distinguished and discerning among the ever-increasing new type of travellers, who were then only just starting to be called tourists.

the architects were Charles Mewes of Paris and Luis de Landecho of Madrid, who worked under the supervision of legendary hotelier César Ritz. the inauguration gala of 1910 was a grand occasion attended by the Spanish royal family, including King Alfonso Xiii and Queen ena, and prime minister José Canalejas.

And ever since then the salons, terraces and gardens of the hotel Ritz Madrid have welcomed a steady stream of kings, prime ministers, international

diplomats, generals, ambassadors, writers and aristocrats. today, over 100 years since it first opened its doors, the Ritz Madrid continues to offer absolute style and luxury.

All 167 rooms have marble bathrooms, handmade carpets, embroidered linen sheets and views of the Prado national Museum or gardens.

And the fine dining is simply outstanding. executive chef Jorge gonzales is renowned across the world, and throughout the year culinary events and celebration dinners provide a showcase of his talents.

on the evening we dined we enjoyed a centenary menu, which included some of the Ritz’s most renowned creations for gala dinners. Consommé Sévigné, created for a Spanish Mail Service banquet in 1912, was followed by braised crayfish tails, served to President Mitterrand of France in 1982, and so it went on.

the à la carte menu is every gourmet’s delight and combines traditional Spanish cooking with international innovation. Signature dishes include Madrilenian cocido, suckling pig, baby eel Bilbao-style and nouvelle cuisine amanitas mushrooms with Parmesan and nut cream.

the fine food can be enjoyed in the grand surroundings of the goya Restaurant, with its crystal chandeliers, sparkling silver and soaring ceilings, or alfresco on the marble terrace which overlooks the Ritz gardens. And naturally the service is impeccable. .

19RIT Z MADRID

the Ritz’s central location makes it the perfect place from which to enjoy Madrid’s many cultural attractions.

From goya to Velazquez, Picasso to el greco, art lovers are spoilt for choice at the city’s Prado Museum and Reina Sofía Museum and Art Centre.

Just a short walk away is the 18th-century royal palace, which was once the residence of the Spanish monarchs and retains all the pomp and splendour of the past. the Almudena Cathedral it sits beside took over 100 years to complete and has a breathtaking neo-gothic interior.

Retiro Park, just five minutes from the Ritz, with its elegant French-style parterre grounds, crystal palace and soaring fountains, bears testimony to the days when it was the private recreation ground of Spanish royalty. Carriage rides through the gardens allow romantics to enjoy the same feeling of privilege, while boat hire is available on the lake.

After dark, Madrid’s atmospheric streets come into their own, with buskers touring the many pavement cafés and tapas bars. traditional flamenco can be enjoyed at the Café de Chinitas and Corral de la Moreria, while the streets of Paseo de la Castellana, Paseo de Recoletos and Plaza de Santa Ana boast an impressive array of restaurants and nightspots.

Shopping in Madrid is a must, with the big Spanish designers Loewe, hoss and Adolfo Dominguez located in the goya district. the el Cortes department store showcases the best international designers, while out-of-town shopping malls such as La Roca Village offer heavily-discounted designer buys and are easily accessible by taxi, bus or train.

on Sundays Madrid hosts one of the world’s most colourful flea markets: el Rastro, in the Latino district, sells everything from vintage accessories to antiques. the area is renowned for its plethora of tiny tapas bars, which sell a mouth-watering selection of ever-changing local specialities.

the real secret to discovering Madrid, however, is to turn down a back street and away from the crowd, where an intimate tapas bar, shady plaza and trickling fountain provide pure escapism in this most atmospheric of cities.

A Deluxe City View Room at the Hotel Ritz Madrid starts at €340 per room per night, including tax. For further information or to make a booking contact Orient-Express on Tel. 0845 077 2222. www.ritzmadrid.com.

22 ERMENEGILDO ZEGNA

Today’s international businessman confidently and comfortably strolls between the Eastern and

Western worlds. Little wonder then that Ermenegildo Zegna’s new autumn and winter collection for men is looking East; especially as the company is celebrating 20 years in China this year.

Taking the Chinese ability to shape their destiny as inspiration, this new collection is cool and contemporary, blending yin and yang, East and West, and mixing the rigorous appeal of Chinese Revolution uniforms with the flawless and hypermasculine style of the 1940s.

A sober palette, the perfect passport for travelling to far countries and distant cultures, encompasses anthracite greys that turn black, and tea and mahogany tones which range from red to brown, with touches of bamboo green.

The unexpected and unique glossy woven silk detailing from a celebrated piece of classical Chinese art (Along the River During the Qingming Festival, by Zhang Zeduan, circa 1100, and depicting the everyday life of Chinese artisans and aristocrats) in lacquer red or bronze is the trademark of the entire collection.

Silhouettes are defined by straight-shouldered three-button suits and

jackets as well as streamlined high-cuff trousers, all worn with snug raglan overcoats.

A sporting theme is echoed in utility touches and reinvented tweed or macro Prince of Wales fabrics. A new waffle fabric makes its debut, interweaving worn-looking cotton and wool. Paying homage to the Chinese theme, the collection’s only wool pinstripe, the 5milmil15, hints at the shape of bamboo canes.

Outerwear is nonchalant and practical, with waxed cotton and leather peacoats as well as buffed-off shearling duffel coats.

Handcrafted cashmere sweaters, some with suede embroideries, are also inspired by the Zhang Zeduan’s painting.

Evening is about well-deserved pleasures. Zegna’s tailoring excellence creates silk satin and velvet garments in cuts that are sexy and sophisticated, including silk ottoman long jackets, with additional light padding in the daring kimono-cut version, lined with exquisite detail, in the same colour print silk that can be found in the small-button-collar shirts.

Echoes of Oriental themes enrich the accessories, from the leather combat-type boot with a slightly curved tip to the slipper-like shoe, both with a hand-finished thick sole.

Dedicated to globetrotters are iPad shoulder cases, waist pouches and new upgraded belts with useful solutions for techno-gadgets. Holdalls come in printed leather while duo ties contain a hidden Zegna seal in Chinese handwriting.

it’s the fine quality of fabrics that gives Zegna its edge. This is due to Ermenegildo Zegna, the eponymous founder of the Zegna group, and his zeal for procuring the finest wool, cashmere and mohair from as far afield as Australia, mongolia and South Africa in his quest to produce the finest men’s suit fabrics in the world.

back in the small village of Trivero, in the heart of the italian Alps (where the brand was born in 1910), he transformed these natural fibres into threads in the laboratory of the Zegna mill, achieving extraordinary textile perfection.

To put Zegna’s achievement of creating wool threads of 19 microns (for a quality extra-fine fabric) and 11.5 microns (for a superfine wool) into context, a human hair measures 50 to 60 microns and the most flexible of Scottish tweeds measure 35 microns.

Zegna’s woollen fabrics are comparable to the most beautiful silks and even vicuna, the ‘cloth of the gods’ from the Andes.

The pinnacle of the Ermenegildo Zegna fabric offering is vellus Aureum, the result of a worldwide quest for the world’s finest wool crop, from which a maximum of about 50 pieces are offered worldwide to invited clients once a year.

Ermenegildo Zegna is the only global brand to offer clients a fabric woven according to their tastes and desires; the ultimate finishing touch is the client’s name woven into the fabric selvedge.

The Zegna mill has been supplying lightweight woollen and cashmere fabrics to Savile Row for over two decades; these light and modern fabrics have played a significant part in revolutionising the tailoring industry, as tailors were required to find new ways of constructing garments with lighter linings.

24 ERMENEGILDO ZEGNA

mADE TO mEASuRE

in the 1970s the made-to-measure service was introduced to provide a fully-customised tailoring experience. The distinct Zegna made-to-measure style is highly tailored, with a natural silhouette reminiscent of neapolitan tailoring and characterised by rich luxurious details and a powerful italian style.

This made-to-measure service differs from those traditionally offered by small niche tailors such as those in Savile Row. unlike most bespoke services, which can take up to six months, Zegna can deliver fully-personalised garments within four to six weeks, and with only two fittings. These uniquely personal and individual suits are fashioned by Zegna tailors using traditional artisan methods and quality craftsmanship.

Ermenegildo Zegna says: “Our customers want the very best: the ultimate fabric, tailoring, detail and, most importantly, service. At Zegna our attention to detail matches our customers’ high expectations.”

linda meredith positively glows, a testament to her own skincare range and her holistic approach to beauty.

she has been an acclaimed authority on beauty since the 1970s when she launched the linda meredith school of make-up. her books became best-sellers worldwide and her treatments have become sought after by many.

her skincare range was born out of a determination to produce the best products on the market to treat, restore and protect the skin at a time when lifestyle and environmental factors were generating new skin problems which demanded a new approach.

to achieve this linda has brought together the knowledge of skilled scientists, skincare experts and botanists from both sides of the atlantic.

she sources organic ingredients wherever possible, using naturally-derived active ingredients, essential oils, fruit acids and encapsulated vitamins, and avoids synthetic ingredients, mineral oils, parabens and other toxic chemicals that strip the skin of its natural oils and ph balance, leaving it dehydrated and stressed.

her treatments and skincare range complement her holistic approach to beauty: she considers the health of the whole body, not just the skin, and believes that feeding your body the right way is essential for looking after your skin.

in 2006 linda launched lm1, which was acclaimed as the ultimate anti-wrinkle cream. it delivered such spectacular results, leaving skin looking younger, healthier and dramatically less lined and wrinkled, that the cream was described as revolutionary and even magic.

over the last five years linda has continued to perfect and advance her skincare range and there are now more than 20 products available, including v-tox, which linda describes as the natural alternative to botox.

v-tox is a botanical cream that contains neuropeptides derived from natural algae and is designed to relax the skin and de-stress wrinkled muscle areas; it’s regarded as being as revolutionary as lm1.

linda’s skincare success story continues with amazon, a ground-breaking vitamin cream with incredibly advanced properties that helps to repair the skin’s natural lipid barrier, healing, softening, soothing and smoothing.

it contains powerful antioxidants and high levels of vitamin C to soothe away irritated skin aggravated by damaging environmental factors such as pollutants and sunlight, restoring skin to health.

described as a miracle cream, amazon has experienced incredible success since its launch and has been used on many of the most influential and powerful faces from the worlds of business and celebrity.

many of these people have also been regularly frequenting linda’s fabulous Knightsbridge salon, which she opened in the 1990s.

this year, for the first time, linda has taken her treatments overseas to the top establishments in spain, including the mandarin oriental hotel and spa in

34 THE PIG

The PigLiz Kavanagh discovers a special restaurant with rooms hidden in The New Forest

Dorset-raised James golding, head chef at The Pig in Brockenhurst, has achieved more in 18 years than some of the world’s

great chefs have achieved in a lifetime, yet he’s delightfully unpretentious.

And he’s not your conventional chef. he recently branded his arm with the same iD number as the pigs he is rearing on-site for Christmas, and says his ten piercings have served him well over the years, making him immediately identifiable in a world where making one’s mark is crucial to success.

Not that he needed much help standing out from the crowd.

Starting his career at the Academy of Culinary Arts at Bournemouth College, James’ potential was exploited to the full by The Savoy, which plucked him out from his fellow students as a rising star. he has since made a name for himself at some of the most high-profile restaurants across the world.

There aren’t many young chefs who can boast prominent roles at the likes of Le Caprice, J Sheekey and Soho house in New York on their CV by the age of 30, but by the time James returned to his roots as head chef at the harbour heights in 2006 he had an astonishing track record.

“i began my training at 16 and threw everything into my work,” he says. “i literally worked around the clock, and because i was lucky enough to train alongside great chefs like Anton Adlemann and Mark hix i was

able to go far further than most of my contemporaries.”his hard work paid dividends but his ultimate

ambition was to have a restaurant of his own.“From a child i had enjoyed foraging for food with my

dad and we would often go mushroom hunting, herb collecting and fishing together across The New Forest and the South Coast,” he says. “While i was working in London and New York i didn’t get much chance to do that, but as soon as i returned home i was determined to incorporate wild and local food into my menus.

“i began researching local specialist producers at a time when regional produce was still regarded as too expensive and seasonal to use commercially. i met farmers, tasted their food and saw how it was grown and became committed to buying both seasonally and locally wherever i could.”

At The Pig James has created a restaurant almost entirely dedicated to local produce. it boasts a 15 mile menu – a first for the region – with eggs, fruits and vegetables sourced from The Pig’s extensive kitchen garden. Mike Kleyn, formerly head gardener at Babington house, has created a feast of flavour and texture within its walls, with seasonal growing ensuring the menus are constantly changing.

it makes for exciting eating, with the menu boasting a selection of ‘literally picked this morning’ vegetarian dishes as well as garden salads and puddings rich in garden apples and pears, berries, lemon verbena and mint as they come into abundance.

35THE PIG

On the day we visited we browsed the menu with a beer and a bowl of saddleback scratchings with apple sauce, crisped to perfection, before tucking into cured beef from award-winning New Milton butcher T Bartlett and beets and rocket from The Pig garden. Black pudding from Tatchbury Farm was accompanied by creamy duck egg from Fluffets Farm, garden leaves and bitter marigold petals, and so it went on.

Wine at The Pig is well priced, encouraging us to follow sommelier Lukasz Maslonik’s recommendations, and there is a wide choice available by the glass. A light and fruity Cabernet Fronde proved perfect with our starters, and a creamy Mas de Daumas gassac went a long way to convince my ‘red wine only’ husband that white wine is not to be sniffed at.

The main courses it accompanied were exceptional: full of flavour and beautifully presented. Test Valley Trout with seaweed crisps and mussels from Keyhaven came with fennel potatoes fresh from the garden, while my New Forest summer truffle risotto was aromatic heaven: the truffles were found by one of The Pig’s specialist foragers among the tree roots that day.

We ended our meal with garden mint mousse and chocolate ice cream, which combined the freshness of green leaves with traditional naughtiness and was divine.

Cooking like this is time-consuming, James freely admits. he spends as much time out of the kitchen gathering his precious ingredients as he does in it. “i’d love to go out and shoot our own game and rabbit,” he says, “but there comes a point when i also have to remember that i’m a husband and daddy too. My children are well used to me stopping the car to gather a handful of something i have spotted in a hedgerow, and whenever i can i’m in the forest or down on the beach looking for new ingredients.”

Unsurprisingly, The Pig has already received rave reviews for its food, but its surroundings are rather special too.

Formerly Whitley Ridge, the georgian house was given a complete makeover by Jim Ratcliffe, the man behind Lime Wood, and a team of directors and shareholders, including hotel du Vin founder Robin hutson and marketing guru David elton.

With Judy hutson casting her magic across the interiors, the result is an eclectic mix of shabby chic and laid-back quirkiness, with no expense spared.

hand-painted trompe l’oeil, stuffed boars’ heads, sofas you can sink into and antique leather combined with muted colours, luxury fabrics and carefully considered lighting make The Pig interesting and comfortable without being pretentious or kitsch.

The addition of a large greenhouse-style conservatory means that dining can be enjoyed under the stars in the evening and alfresco on sunny days, with sweet-smelling jasmines and vines creeping up the walls inside.

The wooden chairs are non-matching, as are the vintage bone-handled cutlery and the recycled glassware, and home-baked bread arrives in a wire cage, roughly cut in chunks and accompanied by olive oil infused with garden herbs.

And upstairs and alongside the kitchen garden 26 rooms and duplex suites, priced from just £125 a night, provide comfortable overnights, with great beds, oversized showers, thick towels and larders stocked with locally-sourced treats and snacks.

At breakfast, having gone out to the hen house to find our own eggs and tucked into the most delicious bacon i have ever tasted, we ordered a take-home box of cured meat, hampshire cheese, freshly-baked bread and garden salad to enjoy for a late lunch. We would, we decided, gather some chives from our own garden at home.

Our previously neglected herb pots have suddenly got a lot more attention.

Mille Miglia

Clive Bate takes on the epic 1,000-mile car race

38 MILLE MIGLIA

To enter the Mille Miglia, be accepted and finish, driving a Ferrari, has been a dream for emblem Sports Cars director Clive Bate for over a decade.

“i remember sitting in my father’s car at the age of three ‘driving’ in the front seat and from then on i dreamt of owning a car of my own,” he says. “i bought my first Ferrari at 40 and began investing in classic and contemporary Porsches and Ferraris. What started as an interest grew steadily into an all-consuming passion.”

in 2004 Clive became a director and shareholder of Poole-based emblem Sports Cars, which is today regarded as one of the top Ferrari, Maserati and lamborghini specialists in the country.

“i retired in 2006 but have never been the sort of person who could sit back and spend my days watching television and playing golf,” he says. “When my son and his business partner came up with the idea of setting up a business entirely dedicated to maintaining and restoring the very cars which i loved, i couldn’t resist becoming involved.”

This involvement in emblem Sports Cars – although it is clear it is much more than that – has certainly paid dividends, and in May this year, with his 1949 Ferrari

166 inter coupe prepared by the emblem team, Clive’s Mille Miglia dream became a reality.

Named by enzo Ferrari as ‘the most beautiful race in the world’, the first Mille Miglia took place in 1927 as an open-road endurance race for unmodified production cars. The route from Brescia to Rome and back was driven non-stop and covers 1,000 Roman miles. Today competing cars have to be models which took part in the race before 1957, with pedigree more important than value.

“The 166 inter was Ferrari’s first true production grand tourer,” Clive says. “166 inter models became the first Ferraris to be purchased for the road rather than the racetrack, and despite being extremely sought-after they have yet to reach stratospheric prices.”

as well as being financially feasible, the car had other advantages. “The 166 inter represents a historical turning point for Ferrari from racing specialist to consumer car manufacturer, and because it had competed in the Mille Miglia before it was known to the organisers,” Clive says. “it was also the oldest Ferrari to take part in, and that certainly helped to give weight to my application for a place in the race.

technical expertise on hand, but on days when vital maintenance had to be carried out along the way we would have to drive until the small hours to catch up and then be back behind the wheel again by 8am.”

along the way there was plenty to take in. “One of the highlights of the Mille Miglia is being allowed to drive through normally pedestrianised cobbled streets in some of the most beautiful places in italy,” Clive says. “The magnificence of Sienna and Firenze and awesome scenery in the mountain passes and twisting, winding roads were unforgettable.”

On 15 May the team completed the route, in 243rd place, with delighted friends and families greeting the duo as they drove through the finish line.

“Our lasting impression was of the enthusiasm of the people we waved to along the way,” Clive says. “Whole families would come out of their homes to greet us; even the back-up van got cheers as it followed close behind. Seeing so many appreciate the work and effort it takes to keep classic cars on the road made every difficult moment melt into insignificance.

“as Stirling Moss says: ‘a finish in itself is a victory,’ and that was certainly true for us.”

There are over 1,700 entries for just 375 places, so getting approved was a huge achievement in itself.”

Preparation work started immediately, with friend Daniel Bilski chosen as co-driver. “Few spare parts are available for a 1949 Ferrari,” Clive says, “so sourcing normally simple items such as water pump internals, dynamo bits, wheel bearings and headlight bulbs took some doing.

“all the preparation was consigned to emblem Sports Cars and the car took up residence in the workshop for several months as the team worked on it after hours to ensure it was at its very best for the race.”

Fast-forward to 11 May and Clive and Daniel began their epic road trip at the Brescia Trade Centre, a vast exhibition hall where Mille Miglia participating cars including stunning examples from audi, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche, as well as British classics such as early astons, Bentleys, Jaguars, Healeys and austin Healeys, were shown off in all their glory.

From Brescia, drivers and cars proceeded to the start line in the Viale Venicia, each with their own individual start times.

Timings throughout the race were critical, with penalties for arriving both late and early at checkpoints along the way.

From the outset, maintaining the car became a full-time concern. “Conditions in Brescia were incredibly hot and our car began to flow petrol from its fuel bowl,” Clive says. “a fix done, we set off for the start with two hours to spare, only to get firmly gridlocked with other competitors in a giant one-way system going nowhere.

“Due to fuel evaporation we constantly needed to start the car and ran the battery down. By the time we fitted the spare, plus an additional electric fuel pump, we were late for the start. The only way to make it in time was to move hundreds of spectators from the roped-off pavements. We started with 12,000 penalty points for being late.”

Steep hills and traffic-congested cities added to concerns about over-heating, with the event punishing not only on machinery but also on the team. Clive says: “Daniel and i were followed by two members of the emblem team in a support van, so we always had

Just a daydream away…Simon Gardner enjoys the ultimate spa experience at Pennyhill Park

44 PENNYHILL PARK

Even as we turned into the long sweeping drive leading to Pennyhill Park Hotel and The Spa we felt that we had stepped away from

the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The elegant ivy-clad country house hotel, located near Windsor Great Park and between Ascot, Sunningdale and Wentworth, is only 40 minutes or so from London yet it feels as though you are in the middle of the countryside.

We were escorted to our room by John, one of the concierge team. Every room is individually designed, so no two are the same; ours had a four-poster bed complete with a pillow menu and an enormous bathroom with underfloor heating. As seductively soporific as our room was, however, we couldn’t wait to visit The Spa, previously voted England’s Leading Spa Resort in the World Travel Awards and currently in the running for Best Hotel Spa in The Spa Traveller Awards.

Opened in 2002, The Spa is 45,000 square feet of pure indulgent relaxation. There’s not one, not two, but eight indoor and outdoor pools, all ozone-treated. The centre-piece is a 25-metre blue ballroom swimming pool, which has underwater music, but outdoors we were also tempted by bubbling Canadian hot tubs and a hydrotherapy pool.

We went from a dip in the indoor pool to the hot tub outside to back inside again to experience what they call thermal heaven. With herbal steams, a laconium (a relaxing room where radiant warmth emanates from the heated walls, seats and floor), a tepidarium (a favourite, with heated contoured ceramic couches) and an ice cave, you’re able to sit back and relax while your circulation is stimulated.

45PENNYHILL PARK

Much as we would have liked to work out in the 3,000-square-feet gym or join a class such as t’ai chi, yoga or Pilates in the exercise studio, we couldn’t resist instead a relaxing afternoon in one of the 21 treatment rooms (including double rooms, a wet room and a VIP suite). My therapist, Kirsty, explained that The Spa’s five-star treatments and facilities have evolved around its natural, holistic and organic principles. All the therapists are experts and, as Kirsty explained, can tailor-make your treatment depending on your own physical and emotional needs on the day.

I chose one of the new Elemental Herbology treatments – which must have been one of the most complete massages I’ve experienced. Here’s a tip: after your treatment, wander upstairs to the sensory relaxation lounge and lie on one of the large warmed ‘gel’ beds so that the restful effects of your treatment linger for a little while longer.

After our visit to The Spa (an adult-only environment) I can certainly see why Pennyhill is so popular for spa breaks and spa days.

The prospect of dinner in the fine dining restaurant, The Latymer, pulled us away from the tranquillity of The Spa. Headed by chef Michael Wignall, the restaurant boasts an impressive Michelin star and has just been awarded its fifth AA rosette, one of only eight restaurants in the UK to hold this accolade.

I chose the tasting menu, which featured such magnificent creations as Portland crab with sustainable caviar, braised leeks, crab consommé and

46 PENNYHILL PARK

Essentially Exclusive…Pennyhill Park Hotel and The Spa is one of four luxury country house hotels in the Exclusive Hotels Group. The others are Manor House Hotel & Golf Club, Castle Combe, a 14th century property in 365 acres of Cotswold countryside; Lainston House Hotel, Winchester, a beautiful 17th century William and Mary country house; and South Lodge Hotel in West Sussex, a former family home built in 1883 and visited by Winston Churchill.

verbena jelly, Marinated Cornish mackerel with slow-cooked octopus, gazpacho, pressed grilled cucumber, fennel fern and olive, and Cassoulet of Anjou squab, slow-cooked Pyrenean mountain pork belly, garden peas, borlotti beans, girolles and thyme. My wife chose the vegetarian tasting menu. Head sommelier Davide Vaccarini (his uncle was once a winner of the coveted title of Best Sommelier of the World, so we were confident in his choices) helped us to match wines with our food as, rather uniquely, the entire wine list is available by the glass. What a treat!

If we had wanted a more relaxed dining experience we could have plumped for The Brasserie, a more informal two-AA-rosette restaurant. Alternatively, for a special celebration, we would recommend the theatricality of the Perrier Jouët Chef’s Table, situated right in the heart of the main kitchen.

In the morning, if you want a breath of fresh air, walking and jogging maps as well as mountain bikes are available from reception. We also discovered a nine-hole par-three golf course, an all-weather tennis court, a sports pitch and a shooting range for clay pigeon shooting or archery, but after our delicious dinner the night before neither of us was feeling particularly active. Instead, we collected our speciality bread from the hotel’s own bakery (you can view breads and patisseries being prepared through a viewing window) before reluctantly setting off for home.

The wow facTorLook up and around the ostentatious and dazzling splendours of east cliff hall – the perfect setting for an event spectacular or an intimate occasion. emma caulton was impressed and inspired

for a spectacular venue with a difference you would be hard pushed to better the russell-cotes art Gallery and Museum which is being

launched as an events venue in the New Year. It’s a hidden treasure trove reached from the cliff path above Bournemouth’s east cliff beach.

formerly east cliff hall, it has the appearance of a tiered cake, with its confection of striped canopies, spires, bay windows, balustraded balconies and sweeping stairs set in gardens where sculptures and a secret grotto with a fountain are hidden among the willows and palms. It’s easy to imagine the gardens romantically lit at night for a special occasion.

But it’s the interior that makes you hold your breath. It was originally designed by Sir Merton russell-cotes as a birthday gift for his wife and as a home for the art and collections gathered on their travels. But the house is a work of art in itself, with exquisite friezes, bespoke relief wallpapers, outrageously vibrant juxtapositions of colour, and dazzling motifs of stars and comets.

It is such an ostentatiously opulent interior that you can develop a crick in the neck from gazing ever

around and upwards at stained-glass lights, an exotic trompe l’oeil Moorish alcove with lanterns and angled doorways, a painted ceiling where goddesses preen and Pegasus flies, and a rendition of the Parthenon frieze (otherwise known as the elgin Marbles in the British Museum).

Yet in many ways the house, completed in 1901 and one of the last great Victorian houses to be built, is a bit of a secret, with few people aware of the riches within.

rooms or indeed the whole museum will be available for events. a variety of occasions have already been enjoyed here, including private dinner parties and birthday celebrations, business events and a charity auction in the spectacular double-height balconied hall with fountain and grand piano. The hall’s dramatic cliff-top position, with views sweeping around the bay to old harry rocks, makes it a perfect venue for watching the air show.

There are too many highlights to mention. Italian renaissance meets old Scottish baronial in the stunning hall: doors to the drawing room were taken from a palazzo in florence, while the balcony is reminiscent of Scottish architecture.

50 RUSSELL COTES

In the raspberry-coloured dining room, which seats up to 20, magnificent peacocks strut across a deep coving of gold leaf, and Napoleon’s wine cooler, a beautiful object in itself, graces a corner.

In other rooms are friezes of swallows and delicate blossom, or crows against an autumnal dawn. Motifs of the heavens feature throughout the hall, with comets, stars, owls, bats, birds and suns chasing across the walls, ceilings and windows.

Then there is the art: the walls are crammed full with works of stature. Dante Gabriel rossetti’s iconic Venus Verticordia, with rich roses and honeysuckle detailing, has just returned home from being on loan to the National Gallery of Modern art in rome.

Beyond the hall, the art gallery (a great space for an awards dinner) exhibits work from the russell-cotes’

own collection as well as contemporary art and selling exhibitions. a current exhibition explores changing attitudes to the figure – very appropriate as the russell-cotes’ collection of nudes was considered controversial at the time. There are works by william etty, a trailblazer of the nude, and John Byam Shaw, who had to dress his Jezebel. contemporary work on view and on sale includes collage nudes by Jonathan Yeo alongside sensuous sculpture carved from the last piece of quarried Isle of wight alabaster by Jon edgar, who has generously donated a contribution from his sales to the gallery.

The attention to quality and detail throughout the house and galleries is extraordinary. Inveterate travellers, Sir Merton and Lady russell-cotes journeyed from europe to egypt and as far as Japan where, basically, they went shopping, gathering together one of most important Japanese collections in the world.

In the house today the chic sits next to the kitsch – there’s even the axe head said to have beheaded Mary, Queen of Scots. It’s a palace of intriguing delights, there for the enjoying.

Discovering waters new and close to home makes

getting away from it all so much easier.

the knowledgeable yacht owner is leaving the usual cruising grounds of the mediterranean and steering homewards to Poole and the Dorset coast, which promise what may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch world-class sailing in the olympic-class waters off weymouth and Portland next summer.

But it’s not just about water sports: Dorset offers a dramatic coastline. the Jurassic Coast, england’s only natural world Heritage site, runs for 95 miles along the Dorset and Devon coast. Its varied coastline includes spectacular rock stacks, arches, cliffs, coves and beaches, with Durdle Door as one of its highlights, and all worth exploring.

take moorings at the prestigious Port of Poole marina, Poole Harbour’s new marina, representing a £1 million investment and perfectly positioned in a peaceful location, with a free water taxi service to nearby vibrant Poole Quay, and access to Poole mainline railway station with direct services to London and weymouth. Hoisting sail couldn’t be easier.

this stretch of coastline is so stunning that you can imagine you’re in a foreign land.

Poole Harbour is the second largest natural harbour in the world after sydney, and most of its 60 miles

of coastline are remarkably unspoilt. the discovery of an Iron age longboat has shown that the harbour has been a busy waterway since as far back as 300BC. more recently, during the 1940s, the harbour doubled as an airstrip for both military and commercial flying boats.

today the Harbour’s shallow waters and variable wind conditions make it popular for water sports. and with a proliferation of waterskiing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, wakeboarding and kayaking there are activities for everyone.

the Harbour shelters eight islands, mostly uninhabited. the largest, Brownsea Island, is owned by the National trust and is renowned for its red squirrel colony and as the birthplace of the scout movement.

Poole itself is best approached from the sea, from where its charms as a historic port are evident. the Quay is lively with pubs, cafés and bars overlooking fishing boats, pleasure cruisers and giant cross-Channel ferries. During the summer there are regular boat trips up and down the coast, with destinations including Brownsea Island and wareham, and on summer evenings the Quay is the setting for many regular events, including lively concerts and firework displays.

out on open waters the coastline of western Dorset is one of the most varied and dramatic in the country and includes the regency town of weymouth, the 18-mile Chesil Beach and pretty Lyme regis, which is so rich in fossils.

altogether this landscape is a stunning backdrop for a sailing adventure. so set sail for Poole and Dorset: it’s the place to be.

Port of Poole marinathe new £1 million Port of Poole marina is in a peaceful position yet has a free water taxi service to nearby vibrant Poole Quay.

It’s perfectly positioned for sailing enthusiasts, particularly those visiting the 2012 olympic Games along the coast at weymouth and Portland, and others keen to explore and enjoy the delights of Poole Harbour and the Dorset coast.

the marina has space for eight deep-draught superyachts, 59 boats between 10 and 15 metres and 20 personal water craft. although only recently opened, the marina has already seen a variety of boats taking up permanent moorings, from barges to superyachts.

the marina offers 24-hour security and a service to arrange luxury cars and book tables at top restaurants in the area.

John Binder, manager of Poole Quay Boat Haven, the company behind the new Port of Poole marina, enthuses about the new marina and the local area: “Leave your boat with us. we’re on a direct connection between London and weymouth for the olympic Games, yet this Harbour is an incredibly beautiful place, sweeping from shell Bay to North Haven, with fantastic inlets and outlets. we’ve 270-degree views across to Corfe Castle. You can watch the sun rise in the morning and set in the evening, and the sun can be over us all day. Change your habits: come out of the mediterranean, visit and cruise the Dorset coast and come and be part of the olympic experience.”

Bringing the outside in

Melanie Warman meets John King from outdoor living specialist Kingspace

Britons spend over £5 billion a year on their gardens yet very few maximise on the benefits of outdoor living during the winter months,

according to John King, owner of Kingspace in Bournemouth.

“As a nation we have long aspired to the outdoor ‘café culture’ life of our european cousins blessed with warmer climates and, while we don’t have year-round sunshine in this country, there’s certainly no need for us to stay inside,” he says.

not when you could be sitting by an open fire – in the open air. nor when you could be warm and cosy inside a glass room, the great outdoors outside brought inside. or indeed when you could be submerged in warm, bubbling water with just the sight of your breath telling you it’s chillier than you think.

“the garden has become very much an extension of our homes and it should work as another room –

just outside,” John says. “People spend a great deal of time making it look good, which makes it even more important to be able to enjoy it all year round. gardens can arguably look at their most beautiful as we head into autumn.”

John worked in the building trade for many years before taking a late career break to study. it was while he was an architecture student at London’s Metropolitan university that he became fascinated by year-round outdoor living, which at the time was largely enjoyed overseas.

he set up Kingspace a little over a year ago and even in that relatively short space of time the company has grown hugely. Part of its success is due to John’s passion for being the first to offer innovative, luxury outdoor products from abroad.

the Canadian cedar hot tub is a perfect example. encased in its own beautifully-crafted

wooden summerhouse surround, the hot tub can be sunk into the ground. glass of bubbly in hand you step up into the tub and sink into, yes, more bubbles. it’s a heavenly experience, with the backdrop of dark, winter evenings making stargazing all the more alluring.

You don’t need the protection of a summerhouse though, even in the winter, John says: “immerse yourself in the warm water of a spa, steaming in the crisp evening air, and all the day’s stresses and strains will melt away. our swim spas allow outdoor swimming against a current, with the water heated to a bath-like temperature – warmer than most indoor pools.”

outdoor heating can be enjoyed from an ecosmart fire – a talking point of any outdoor space and increasingly popular at the swankiest of society soirées. these stylish fireplaces are portable and weather-resistant. Fuelled by renewable energy source bioethanol, they are clean-burning and bring warmth with the added bonus of no smoke, no spitting embers and no cleaning up afterwards.

And for those who enjoy cooking in the great outdoors, Kingspace’s wide range of outdoor kitchens includes electric rotisseries, fridges, hobs and sinks, with units available in a wide choice of colours and finishes.

Your ‘extra room’ could be a room too, of course – a glass room. Conservatories are one thing, but Kingspace ‘rooms’ can be created entirely from glass, with sides that fold back on sunny, autumnal days.

“outdoor living is enjoying a popularity explosion,” John says. “Families are still embracing the whole ‘don’t move, improve’ phenomenon of recent years and the garden is often at the top of the list. touches of luxury are highly sought-after and it’s easy to understand why. People work hard – and when they finally get home they want to unwind, feel pampered and enjoy their living space to the full.”

80 KITCHEN & BATHROOM HAVEN

Give me a shirt colour that you like and we can match your kitchen doors to that shade,” says Ivan Hoare of Kitchen & Bathroom Haven. It’s a

bold statement from a man equally capable of creating a bold kitchen, if that’s what you want.

But he can do subtle and muted, too: “We are creating a kitchen for a client at the moment which we are matching to a Farrow & Ball paint colour. Home owners and interior designers both like this service.”

It’s a service that’s only been available since Kitchen & Bathroom Haven started manufacturing its own bespoke kitchens 18 months ago: quality kitchens traditionally-made by craftsmen at Kitchen & Bathroom Haven’s purpose-built facility in Ringwood, where there are also kitchen and bathroom showrooms.

Canford Cliffs-based Kitchen & Bathroom Haven is a family business run by Ivan, his wife and two sons. They’ve been designing beautiful kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms for more than seven years now, but creating their own bespoke kitchens is a relatively

WHaTeveR you WanTare the Rolls-Royce of kitchens being created in Ringwood?

new development, born from a desire to provide a top-quality yet competitively-priced product.

Ivan explains that he’s out to compete with top-end German manufacturers: “We have all those features expected in a quality German kitchen, such as Blum hinges and soft door closures and servo-operated doors.

“Generally I can do anything they can do, and faster, and in some cases better. There’s nothing we can’t do, and we are very, very flexible in terms of heights, depths, widths, colours, finishes…”

Ivan likens mass production of kitchens to the car industry. “With a popular make of car there are probably at best 20 different colours to choose from and about five interiors – and with us there are as many colours as you can think of, because we create the colour for each individual kitchen,” he enthuses.

Choice goes beyond the spectrum of colours. Kitchen & Bathroom Haven can also offer a range of finishes including glossy piano finishes using the

81KITCHEN & BATHROOM HAVEN

same lacquers as Rolls-Royce and Bentley. “We can do a high-gloss finish, matt, satin, anything… If it’s lathed or a piece of wood we can do it,” Ivan promises.

He continues: “We are also a Corian fabricator, making up Corian worktops, but we can source any work surface: granite, Caesarstone, MaSS Concrete, glass… It’s limitless what we can do.”

It’s not just about colour and finish and material: Kitchen & Bathroom Haven can also make the best use of available space. With mass-manufactured kitchens customers are limited to standard multiple sizings, but that’s not the case with Kitchen & Bathroom Haven’s bespoke units.

Ivan explains: “With other manufacturers customers are limited to multiple sizes that go from 300mm to 350mm to 450mm, but if you want a 305mm unit we can do that, and we don’t just do different widths but also different depths and heights, so what we can supply is a truly individual kitchen.

“The linear, streamlined look with handle-less doors tends to be popular, where everything is minimal, lined up, symmetrical and balanced. a lot of companies offer this look but when it comes to the practicalities of room shapes and sizes they can’t necessarily make it work like we can.”

Mixing colours and textures in kitchens is also very on-trend and Ivan comments that walnut goes together well with cream. although high-gloss and satin finishes are currently very popular, traditionalists can also find styles they are comfortable with at Kitchen & Bathroom Haven: “We do traditional as well, with styles such as Shaker doors.”

This can-do attitude is one reason why people who

approach Kitchen & Bathroom Haven to do the kitchen, then ask if the company can also create the bathroom, make the wardrobes for the bedroom and then build some furniture as well.

“We can do as little or as much as people want, from supplying new worktops to completely redoing a whole house,” Ivan says.

“as we have a showroom in Canford Cliffs there’s a perception that we’re pricey, but our kitchens probably start from £10,000 and go up to £150,000. as we manufacture our own kitchens the saving on our cabinetry is probably about 50 per cent: it really is quite considerable – and with us people are also getting exactly what they want.”

Kitchen & Bathroom Haven has quickly become one of the biggest companies in the South producing kitchens and offering a complete design, build and installation service. The company is part of an exciting resurgence in British manufacturing.

“People have warmed to the fact that our kitchens are British-made, and that makes them more environmentally-friendly, too,” Ivan says.

Kitchen & Bathroom Haven has succeeded in offering the best service, design excellence and freedom across an extensive choice of craftsman-made contemporary and traditional kitchens with superior ergonomics. Its bespoke kitchens really are a case of whatever you want. and they’re a surprisingly good value option, too.

Home & AwAy Using influences from far and wide mirco & mirco have created an eclectic colonial look in an edwardian house on the west Cliff, Bournemouth.

86 MIRCO & MIRCO

Successful interior design is often a reflection on the relationship between client and designer.

Sue and Lydia mirco, the mother and daughter partnership of eponymous interior design consultancy mirco & mirco, know all about the importance of the working relationship; so much so that they have just completed the refurbishment of a fourteenth property for one busy couple.

The relationship is so finely tuned that their clients can simply suggest a theme – in this instance ‘colonial’ - and leave Lydia and Sue to bring together a scheme that meets their personal style, needs and expectations. mirco & mirco even feel able to deliver surprises such as the giant heated gazebo in the garden for entertaining.

“Getting to know your designer is really important as designing a home is so personal,” confirms Lydia.

with the clients’ latest project, an edwardian garden apartment in a lush corner of Bournemouth’s west Cliff, Lydia and Sue were tasked with an entire refurbishment overseeing everything from design, build and decoration through to landscaping the garden and restoring ponds and swimming pool.

The project involved new (soundproofed) ceilings, new doors and door frames (some with deep moulded architraves topped with classic broken pediments) and installing restored panelling in the hall.

Lydia smiles, “we can do everything right down to supplying the toothbrushes and towels so all clients need to do is bring their pyjamas.”

mirco & mirco have succeeded in turning what was little more than a building site a few weeks ago into an elegant and comfortable home.

87MIRCO & MIRCO

Mirco & Mirco This acclaimed interior design consultancy’s capacity to interpret their clients’ needs is matched only by a commitment to deliver on time and within budget. mirco & mirco offer a flexible service that allows clients to participate as much or as little in the design process as they wish.

The company can design and commission, or source and produce the desired item or finish from specialist craftsmen from around the world. whether you want crisp modernism or traditional elegance, mirco & mirco will help achieve a look that is innovative and stylish. mirco & mirco have a reputation for vision and professionalism as well as meticulous attention to detail.

Mirco & Mirco 88-90 St Luke’s road, Bournemouth, Tel. 01202 526000. www.mircoandmirco.co.uk.

They have imaginatively interpreted the broad theme of ‘colonial’ into a series of sumptuous and individual rooms which blend together very successfully.

It’s smart and sophisticated with touches of humour and a slightly offbeat uptake on Phileas Fogg’s travels around the world in 80 days. For example, mirco & mirco have incorporated favourite items of the owners, such as a large old-fashioned crocodile skin travelling trunk, found in Harrods, which opens to reveal a drinks cabinet.

The traditional panelled hallway opens unexpectedly onto a vibrant entertaining space in Chinese lacquer cherry red and black, a favourite colour combination of the clients (this dramatic colour scheme also features in the glossy kitchen where units are underlit by red light so they seem to float off the floor).

within the entertainment area mirco & mirco have cleverly played with scale by using oversized furniture, vast silver gilt framed mirrors and generous sofas either side of a bespoke Cavalli champagne table with cooler.

Beyond, the elegance of a gentlemen’s club has been introduced into an inner hall. The walls are luxuriously covered in a rich heraldic patterned fabric, there’s a frieze of Gothic arches, a leather wing armchair, beautiful 18th century-style writing desk and original stone crest of Bournemouth on the wall.

This scheme continues into the master bedroom which has a riding, shooting, fishing country pursuits

theme. Lydia explains that the owners like their master bedroom to be a comforting cocoon and this room certainly delivers with its opulent carved wood and upholstered leather bed layered with Aran cable knit overblanket, a dogtooth check tweed rug and textured linen cushions.

Guest suites include one with a Barbados feel with fresh coastal blues and stripes, Kentia palms and an evocative mural of monkeys and parrots on a terrace overlooking a tropical beach.

Another with a barleytwist four poster bed comprises calming neutrals and naturals on an Indo-Asian theme. There are large wicker lampbases by the beds and the bathroom features a raised bamboo patterned wallcovering.

The opulent drawing room mixes Victorian style with contemporary chic effortlessly. oil portraits hang against walls of burnished gold, windows are dressed with tasselled, lined and gathered curtains. There are comfortably squashy sofas and bergere chairs in a colourful stripe. A specimen table, commissioned by mirco & mirco and filled with an array of seashells and fossils, and an albino peacock are both stylish talking points.

Contemporary comforts and technology is cleverly concealed throughout. In the master bedroom a wet room is hidden behind a classic moulded and arched panelled door, and a television appears out of a bow-fronted chest of drawers. In the kitchen a mirror

transforms into a television screen at the flick of a switch, while in the drawing room a screen drops from the ceiling.

A media system for the entire property is tucked away in a white panelled wardrobe. All DVDs are stored on the system’s memory avoiding a need to display vast quantities of multi-coloured plastic casings that detract from a design scheme.

It is details like this which make all the difference and turn a home into a treat.

88 MIRCO & MIRCO

mInI mIrCo InTerIorS For LITTLe PeoPLe with a young daughter, Lydia mirco knows all about the demands on children’s rooms which need to be fun and practical simultaneously. Lydia has been inspired to focus her designs on children’s and babies’ bedrooms and how their ‘space’ influences them to create the magic of make believe!

Combining her interior design skills with family know-how, Lydia has launched mini mirco – Interiors For Little People.

Lydia has become aware of how babies and children react to their settings. She strongly believes that colours, textures and lighting can play a big part in how a child behaves and develops within their surroundings.

Available online and through independent outlets including Look mum in westbourne, mini mirco meets the needs of babies, toddlers and youngsters all the way through to teens with a range of furniture, bespoke accessories, fabrics and wallcoverings to suit all. mini mirco design and build customized

units that can incorporate beds, slides, archways, steps, and lots of storage within a princess palace, a magical jungle or wherever their imagination leads.

Lydia explains, “Having a young daughter of my own, and the design experience, I know how to use my skills accordingly when working on projects for children and babies. I know what’s safe and what isn’t - we only use non-toxic paints and know how to plan space efficiently.

“we can work with any budget; if a customer simply wants ideas I can create mood board designs that they can follow. Using a designer doesn’t have to be expensive and it can help eliminate expensive mistakes.” Consultations can be booked phone.

92 CL AYESMORE SCHOOL

The very besT boarding

nearly every independent school will boast about the home-from-home environment it offers its boarders, but how can parents be sure that what they are investing in will be right for their child? Clayesmore headmaster Martin Cooke shares his views on the benefits of boarding

a good independent school should offer a unique educational experience tailored to the individual,” says Clayesmore

headmaster Martin Cooke. “it should nurture a child’s talents, shape their perspectives and help to provide a secure foundation from which they will live the rest of their lives.”

For those who board, pastoral care becomes even more important. “boarding at Clayesmore is ever popular, with healthy numbers in all years from our prep school right up to sixth form,” Martin says. “i think the key to this is that our parents believe in boarding as a concept and, in particular, they trust and have faith in what Clayesmore stands for.

93CL AYESMORE SCHOOL

“so much of what is unique and special about boarding lies in the intangible; by this i mean the happiness, the sense of belonging to a community and the thrill of being valued and celebrated in that community. getting that right is often even more of a challenge than achieving educational excellence.”

Today’s boarding schools are contemporary and relevant to the aspirations that parents have for their children and that their children have for themselves. round-the-clock pastoral care is of course a top priority, and that entails a vast team of experts – academic, sporting, medical, nutritional – who are focused entirely on the well-being, progression and development of boarders and day children alike.

but there are other aspects of daily life that need to meet a child’s needs too. “at Clayesmore our accommodation is comfortable, cheery, homely and properly adapted to suit the needs of both growing children and demanding teenagers,” Martin says. “We want our boarders to feel properly at home here.”

boarders at Clayesmore benefit from riding, sailing, dance, climbing, fishing and fencing. Weekend events and outings include visits to the coast, cinema and

theatre and regular trips on the shopping bus.“independence comes not only from living away

from home, but also from getting organised for each day – whether that be for a weekend event or a day of learning,” Martin says.

boarders can join Clayesmore from prep school age and benefit from the same surroundings right up until they leave the school as sixth formers. “our prep school is located right alongside the senior school on one glorious countryside campus,” Martin says, “and this means that a whole family can go to school together.

“homogenised daily schedules, school holidays and exeats offer consistency, allowing siblings to share their experiences with each other throughout their lives.”

When the time comes to move up to the senior school there is one seamless transition, with all the reassurance of continuity of ethos.

Clayesmore’s trump card is its size. a small senior school of 420 or so pupils allows developing adults to gain responsibility and freedom in a way that they might not in a larger school.

94 CL AYESMORE SCHOOL

“We believe here that is it vital for teenagers to come to realise very quickly that they have a real part to play in the daily life of the school,” Martin says, “and that they are truly ‘needed’ and their ideas and experiences hold weight and are valued. in a small school like ours, every pupil is known and noticed, and this feeds directly into their sense of belonging, their confidence and their self-esteem. it is hard to overstate the profound impact this will have on their future lives.

“Clayesmore pupils grow into thoroughly impressive, self-assured, engaging, well-rounded young adults. They have great strengths and they have great humility, and this is because in a small, tightly-knit environment they have learnt how to believe in themselves.”

Clayesmore School holds regular open days and evenings when new pupils and their parents can find out more about the experience of learning and living at the school. Contact the school office for details.

Clayesmore School, Iwerne Minster, Blandford, Dorset. Tel. 01747 813111. www.clayesmore.com.

abouT ClayesMoreClayesmore offers private education from the age of two and a half to 18 years. This means brothers and sisters of all ages can go to school together in one place.

The school was founded in 1898 by the visionary alexander devine, who sought to develop an educational establishment where the whole character of the pupil was fostered and where all their abilities were encouraged and celebrated.

it is an ideal that holds firm today, with Clayesmore’s teaching staff dedicated to ensuring that every pupil is needed, noticed and highly valued for the contribution he or she can make.

The peace and tranquillity of Clayesmore’s setting are in sharp contrast to the bustling energy of the place, where traditions are upheld in a modern-day context. This is evident in the buildings, with the magnificent alfred Waterhouse main house at the heart of a network of state-of-the-art academic facilities.

THE CLAYESMORE SIXTH FORMThe brand new Clayesmore Sixth Form magazine has been launched and here, Headmaster, Martin Cooke introduces its highlights and talks about why he thinks the Sixth Form is so successful.

“I believe the secret of our success is that we inspire our students to reach further than they imagined possible, and if you read our student spotlight pages, you will see how this challenge has variously been met.

Of course, one of the main objectives during the two A-level years is to secure a place at the right university on the right course, and there is a whole raft of information in the magazine on how we manage, guide and support students through the UCAS process. However, it is important for us that we also direct our careers advice at those who wish to follow a different pathway into the working world after A Levels.

Boarding in the Sixth Form is a wonderful opportunity to prepare for life at university and as you leaf through the pages of the magazine you cannot fail to be inspired by the excitement, diversity and sense of community and camaraderie that our boarding environment offers.

For many, perhaps the greatest value of our Sixth Form is that we are relatively small in number – just 120 or so students – which means that everyone is known, everyone is noticed, and everyone has their part to play.

Talk Can Be PreCious

Turning the smartphone into a style statement

98 CONTINENTAL MOBILES

There’s no denying that the mobile phone has rapidly become a lifestyle essential; we rarely leave home without it.

The ubiquitous smartphone may be clever, but is it chic? and in a society where we prize individuality and creativity, why does everyone’s phone look the same?

For so many of us our appearance matters: we have the designer watch, the stylish sunglasses, the latest bag – and then we’re let down by our mobile phone. We want our phone to be as individual as we are.

so where do the celebrities and the style-setters go for a bespoke mobile phone?

The answer is probably Continental Mobiles, which currently accepts orders for its individually-tailored mobile phones from international business people and the celebrity elite from around the world.

Continental Mobiles was launched five years ago. it was envisaged right from the start that it would create products that are timeless classics, reflecting the owner’s style rather than mass-produced clichés.

The company creates bespoke luxury mobile phones which are crafted in england with traditional skills and using the finest leathers, precious metals and gems.

Handcrafted by experts, these mobile phones are fashioned from exotic leather hides, precious metals such as 24-carat yellow gold, 18-carat rose gold and platinum, and encrusted with diamonds, including black diamonds and champagne diamonds, blood red rubies, iridescent rainbow-coloured sapphires and vivid emeralds, all set by hand.

Continental Mobiles has now become established as the premier online boutique for luxury mobile phones. it is also officially accredited by the British Jewellers’ association – and it’s the only telecommunications business in the country to achieve this member status. it retails in more than 20 countries worldwide and has recently been appointed by the saudi arabia royal family to supply their corporate gifts.

each phone is delivered by hand in a polished briefcase in a choice of finishes — piano black, piano white or walnut — along with a Continental Mobiles 24-carat gold-satin-plated card, specialist microfibre gloves and a certificate of authenticity. now, that’s style.

Quintessentially British Handbags

Lulu Guinness at Roberta

102 LULU GUINNESS

Lulu Guinness’ quintessentially British handbags and accessories are loved by superstars and fashionistas across the world, with their chic,

quirky designs making them instantly recognisable. And the lady behind the name, Lulu herself,

admits that part of their success has come from her unconventional path into the fashion world, which, combined with her passion for vintage chic, has made her handbags stand out from the outset.

“I started my training at art college, then moved into video production and finally ended up designing handbags, even though I had had no formal training,” she explains.

“I had a clear vision of what I wanted to do, however, and with Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli as an inspiration, plus a passion for vintage design, I developed my first collection and opened a shop in London in Ellis Street, near Sloane Square, in 1989.

“At the beginning I did absolutely everything, from designing to selling and handling the press. It was a real baptism of fire.”

Lulu’s handbags were soon appearing in fashion magazines across the world, with their unusual shapes, vintage themes and quirky London references adding to their appeal. Celebrity supporters widened their appeal still further: lasting fans include Helena Bonham Carter, Katy Perry, Florence Welch, Christina Aguilera and Rachel Weisz. Other

London shops opened, and today there are also Lulu Guinness boutiques in New York and Tokyo. Lulu’s unique creations are also sold in department and specialty stores including Harrods and Selfridges as well as more locally at Roberta in Christchurch and Bournemouth.

“Part of the success of the company has been our refusal to follow fashion trends and to concentrate instead on innovative designs,” Lulu says. “Our commitment to British heritage certainly appeals to our US and Japanese markets, who love the refined British sense of style.

“While the ‘it bag’ of the season goes out of fashion very quickly, our bags remain timeless, their eccentricity contributing to their enduring style.” So iconic have many of Lulu’s bags become that some are now permanent fixtures in museums – the Florist Basket featuring in the permanent fashion collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

And, recognising her contribution to the British fashion industry, in 2006 Lulu was awarded an OBE by The Queen. “It was a very great honour,” she says.

Asked which of her handbags she loves the most, Lulu is hard pressed to name just one. “At the moment I am carrying the studded Bow Wanda, which is elegant, chic and timeless. It ticks all the right boxes and works for both day and night. That’s always the secret to the perfect handbag.”

103LULU GUINNESS

Lulu Guinness New Collection Lulu Guinness’ new autumn and winter collection is inspired by 1950s Parisian couture. New designs reinterpret the allure of chic feminine fashion and feature a mix of heavy thread work and elegant appliqué on soft leather.

Reflecting the draped gowns and cocktail dresses of the era, detailing includes delicately-scrunched leather in classic black, rich burgundy and shimmery metallic. Lulu’s signature animal prints and flower patterns continue to feature across the collection, with structured box clutches, postcard wallets and practical totes adding to its chic appeal.

A wide selection of Lulu Guinness bags, clutches and accessories is available at Roberta, Christchurch, Tel. 01202 470346, and Bournemouth, Tel. 01202 556290.

Putting the spring back in your stepDealing with knee pain: Adrian Harvey of Nuffield Health Bournemouth advises

106 NUFFIELD HE ALTH

Maybe it’s the fact that Bournemouth’s idyllic coastal location attracts those retiring, or maybe it’s the exhilarating opportunities

to walk, run and cycle in the local area with The New Forest on one side of the town and the Purbeck Hills on the other, but Bournemouth is one of the biggest joint-replacement places in the country.

Over 2,000 knee-specific surgical procedures are carried out every year, with consultant Adrian Harvey himself performing over 250 knee replacements, delivering what are often considered life-changing results for patients.

Adrian is a consultant specialising in knee replacements and sports injuries at Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital and consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeon at Royal Bournemouth and Poole General Hospitals. He initially trained in London before undergoing specialist training in Australia and Switzerland.

107NUFFIELD HE ALTH

“Fifty years ago people of a certain age were content to take life easy,” Adrian says, “but today’s over-60s are extremely active. It’s common for me to perform knee replacements for patients in their 70s and 80s, but we are also increasingly replacing knees in younger patients who have arthritic symptoms and wish to remain active.”

Most knee replacements are performed for painful osteoarthritis of the knee.

Adrian is keen to point out, however, that before undertaking a knee replacement operation other lifestyle changes such as a weight loss programme or a change in exercise patterns should be considered first.

“There are a number of non-operative treatments that can be considered before joint replacement, including weight loss or a course of physiotherapy,” he explains.

So how do you know if you might need a knee replacement? Adrian explains that the symptoms to look out for, apart from pain in the knee, are a

reduction in your walking distance, limping, pain in the knee at night and the need to take painkillers regularly to manage the pain.

If you do require a knee replacement, recent surgical advances including advances in materials have contributed to the development of the procedure.

“Typically, an artificial joint will now last between 10 and 15 years,” Adrian says. “Other recent advances have included new methods of aligning knee replacements, allowing surgeons to bespoke-fit every joint with absolute accuracy.”

He adds: “In some cases patients have lived with knee pain for years. While inevitably there will be discomfort post-operatively, as a general guide patients can expect to be fully mobile within three months of surgery. Many patients will be able to return to activities such as golf and doubles tennis.

“The majority of patients who undergo joint replacement are very satisfied and often see it as a life-changing event.”

NuFFIeLD HeALTH: IT’S PeRSONALThrough Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital patients can enjoy the benefits of personal care and advice from specialist consultants from initial consultation through surgery to post-operative care.

Nuffield Health Bournemouth can also offer patients with knee pain the opportunity to be seen and treated quickly. Patients can be booked in for surgery within a month of their first consultation, and they will be operated on by the same consultant who has advised them from day one.

The commitment to personal attention extends beyond the operation, with consultant care continuing every day for four to five days post-operatively and then at regular intervals for an additional three months.

Post-operative care includes hydrotherapy, with an intensive series of appointments accelerating recovery time.

Intensive physiotherapy can really pay dividends and has huge benefits with knee replacement operations.

In summary, Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital is able to offer the experience of personal, accelerated, top-quality medical care.

the Mappin & Webb story began in 1774 when Jonathan Mappin opened his first silversmith workshop in Sheffield.

he was renowned for his skill and the intricacy of his designs, and his silverware became extremely sought-after, with his mark soon appearing on cutlery on all the best dining tables across the city.

in 1849 the first London shop opened at 17 fore Street; it was soon followed by stores in Moorgate and King William Street. in 1858, following rapid expansion, John Newton Mappin invited his brother-in-law, George Webb, to join him in the business, and the first association of Mappin & Webb was forged.

from the outset, Mappin & Webb was no ordinary silversmith; its cutlery, ironmongery, razors and scissors were beautifully crafted and styled.

in 1897 the company received its first royal warrant, from Queen victoria. today Mappin & Webb is silversmith to her Majesty the Queen and to his royal highness the Prince of Wales, with past warrants bestowed by edward vii and George v.

royal patronage earned the company further renown and business soon boomed. further shops opened outside London, including in Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and edinburgh.

By the turn of the century the company had extended its ranges to include jewellery, watches and giftware, incorporating a stunning array of diamonds and precious stones.

today, as in the past, every Mappin & Webb diamond sold comes with a promise to clean and inspect it once a year for 10 years, free of charge. Other expert services include engraving and in-store jewellery valuation, and a team of Mappin & Webb craftsmen based in the heart of hatton Garden are dedicated to jewellery and diamond restoration.

And for clients wanting something special, Mappin & Webb’s handcrafted service will create or use existing family jewels to design bespoke pieces.

the latest collection, A very British Affair, encompasses a range of diamond jewellery, silverware and glassware, with all craftsmanship carried out in Britain, just as in the past.
